Is this and the Braggs Liquid Aminos the same thing? If not, where would I find the Liquid Aminos?

I noticed in Alissa's book on the essentials list she lists Bragg Liquid Aminos or Nama Shoyu. Are they used interchangeably???

nama shoyu and braggs amino acids aren't the same thing. nama shoyu is raw, fermented soy sauce. braggs is something different. i've heard braggs is not truly a raw food and creates mucus. i think nama shoyu is better for you.

So if a recipe calls for the Braggs would you use Nama Shoyu in it's place?

Yes! Most definitely!

Patricia Bragg, states that her Bragg's Liquid Aminos are indeed raw, unheated, however, she will not or can not put that on the lable, who knows why.

So, Alissa now uses Nama Shoyu, which is raw soy sauce.

it still has wheat in it, where Tamari does not, however Tamari is not raw, so if you are concerned about wheat, you won't wan tot use the Nama Shoyu either, but if you want raw, then the Nama Shoyu will work for you.

it's all a personal preference.

Alissa sells the Nama Shoyu on her website, it's excellent

I just finished reading the following about Bragg's. I think I just stopped using it, but read it and make up your own mind.....

I would just like to say that I love the taste of both of these products.

That aside, I read recently in Gabriel Cousins new book, Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine, that neither of these is considered a strictly raw food and that nama shoyu contains naturally occuring MSG. I still use them both in small amounts, but I just thought you all might be interested in his take on the subject. :)

So any alternatives for those of us who can't have wheat OR soy?

Hi there Nimmanu,
If you like Miso, try the South River Miso Co., they have chickpea miso that does not contain soy at all, it does have brown rice in it though. They also carry a miso made from adzuki beans and brown rice. Unfermented miso is a living food because it contains natural digestive enzymes, lactobacillus and other healthy digestive aids. The miso won't be an exact flavor match to the soy sauce, but it is a nice substitute for the salty flavor. Some of the lighter types of miso have a slightly sweet flavor too. Hope this helps you.

Thanks! I've never tried miso, so I'll give it a try. I really appreciate it. :)

is anything that is not "natural" should not be in my diet. To me if it has to be broken down, seperated, isolated and whatever else then it probably wasn't meant to be ingested by me. Call me naive but I'm wanting purity in my life ~ in my body and if anything has to go through processing (and by that I don't me picked, cleaned, dried etc. ~ I mean like real, honest to goodness "processing" ~ like Bragg's Liquid Aminos) to find the stuff in it that is edible, to me, it's not pure. Yes, that means I will need to be "getting over" some of the old likes in my tastes of foods but I'm doing that anyway by going raw. To me, this is just part of the steps. Someone said in an article that I read that many people who go "raw" are just trying to replace the comfort foods of the S.A.D. diet and by doing so they are still hurting themselves and not giving their bodies the best. I'm new at all of this but for me, I think going "cold turkey" from ALL processed stuff is probably the best decision for my body. Everyone will find where their comfort level is and that is great.................I think my biggest concern all the way around is the fact that we trust people to tell us the truth and then when we find out their truth is really lies, well, where does that leave us? Especially when the "lies" come from someone as big in the health food movement as Patricia Bragg. ????

I just went back to the book that I referenced earlier (Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine) to double check what I said in an earlier post (#9), and I was somewhat mistaken. Gabriel Cousens says that even though Bragg's amino acids and Nama Shoyu are raw, soy-based condiments, they choose not to use them because soy is so difficult to process by the body and that it is likely contamilated by GMO crops. (pg. 151)
That's what I get for trying to remember something and not checking the source as I am typing. LOL

Namaste,
