OMG It was so good!
I FINALLY found some at Henry's Whole Foods Market, so I got one for $1.99.
Kinda expensive, but oh so yummy! The water tasted like heaven.
And I opened it myself without hurting anyone! It took all of 2 seconds to open it, thanks to the video I watched last week :)
Anyways, I blended it with about a cup of the water (I drank the rest before I realized I need some haha), a frozen banana, 3 dates and a tbsp. of cacao.
Amazing.
Just thought I'd share my joy!

Do they get any cheaper if I sing a song about them, or do a dance of worship?
:p

Smiling,
I thought I had opening thai coconuts down opening them with my axe. But it takes me longer than two seconds. It takes me a couple minutes. I'm curious about the video you watched. Where did you see it? What's the technique?
I just opened one a few hours ago and boy was it a mess. I don't think I have the right knives... I've seen a bunch of videos and they make it look so easy...

I'm in love with them.
I'll forever thank Alissa for showing me on her DVD how to open them easily.

It's awsome.
I just cut down the pointy part untill I could see the inner brown shell, then I tapped (more like hit precisely but hard)
round the top with the "heel" of my knife untill I heard it break through, then I inserted the tip of the knife, pryed it open, and voila :)

I can't wait to try that! Thanks!
I'll have to try that method. The hole looks very small though. How do you get all the coconut meat out from that little hole?

That's how I felt too when I tried my first young coconut! The water is so good.

The whole turned out to be about 4 inches in diameter, but then I used a thin plastic spatula scraper thing, and loosened all the meat inside by scraping down the sides and bottom, then just turned it over onto a plate.
Just tap around to find the soft spot at a low enough point on the inner coconut, so that when you pry it open it will be about 4 inches in diam.

Also, my brother taught me a method that makes hardly any mess (using a cleaver looks like I've massacred the poor coconut). I take a strong, serrated knife (like a bread knife), saw through the cone-shaped top, pretty far down, halfway through the coconut. If it's difficult to get through the husk, I tap the knife lightly with the blunt end of a cleaver. Once the liquid starts leaking out, I dump it into my Vitamix and then pop the top off. I can then scoop out the remaining meat.
I just opened 2 coconuts, as shown in the video: http://www.rawfoodmedia.com/cooking/opencoconut.html and it works wonderfully. I'd recommend making a hole in the front and the back (like you would open a can of juice). I used the blunt end of the knife to find the sweet spot... made a hole then found the spot in the back, then drained. After you drain the water THEN continue around until you can pry the top off.... so easy! I tried it like she did in the video without draining first and I ended up spraying coconut water all over myself.

OMGGG My loverly mommy was nice and called a 99 Ranch Market near us (Asian place) and asked about thai coconuts:
They said that they're .70 - .90 cents!
They were out at the time, but they said to call back tomorrow, which I WILL do!
Yayyy Happy coconut week! I had my first one, now I'm hooked!
I hope this doesn't cause any weight gain....haha eh, it'd be worth it :) They're so yummy.

I love that they're so cheap at the Asian markets!! I eat one every morning in a smoothie, and I've lost 14 pounds, so I don't think you need to worry. :)

Yesterday we opened a coconut that was purple inside. Do any of you know if it's ok to eat if the inside is purple? The other one we opened...the water was more yellow than usual...I am wondering if that was ok too.
