I am not fond of running ONE BIT, but in replacement I try to ride my bike. I had heard once that swimming is actually much better for you than running, IN MANY WAYS. For one part running kills your joints, especially on large people like myself, knees too. Bikes and swimming are more fun anyways :D Plus swimming works out your entire body.

I started running when I still had a lot of weight to lose. I bought the book The Runners Handbook by Bob Glover. I love that book! He gives advice for beginners, intermediate, and advanced. Anyway, I hadn't run since I was a teenager, but with his plan I was running in no time. Basically when you start out you do a run/walk plan. You run for 1 minute, then walk for 2 minutes, then run 1...alternating until you have RUN for 8 minutes. Do that for a week, then each week you increase your running time and decrease your walking time until after several weeks you are running for 20 minutes straight. He claims, and I have found it to be true, that you can go on almost forever with 1 minute walking intervals. Once you hit 20 minutes running, then you just increase your distance, without walking.

Get the book!

I think for your situation, Allison's advice is great!

One of the--if not *the*-- most important aspects of running is breathing. You must relearn to breathe.

You must breathe IN through the NOSE, OUT through the MOUTH with each breath. Practice this; it the way we were meant to breathe, and somewhere along the way, we learned to do the opposite or in and out through the mouth.

Another thing about breathing (and these take practice! but they are essential for performance and endurance) when you breathe IN/NOSE your stomach should EXTEND (go out); when you breathe OUT/MOUTH your tummy should go IN. Yes, we do the opposite! Notice when people stick in their stomaches they take a deep breath in? (and usually hold their breath, lol!) Wrong! That is a running no-no.

Do this even when you're not running. It's easy to forget, but, as with all things practiced, it becomes natural. It will help you get it faster too and after a while, you won't have to think about it too much. Concentrate on your breathing; it's very important.

I've been running for over 15 years and really wish I'd have learned at least this one thing from the beginning. It is so essential!

Best of luck :)

Indigo_Girl,

I am type II diabetic and yes, even at 80% raw you will begin your healing, just make sure the 20% cooked is a good cooked, such as Hallejuah Acres suggest. I have had remarkable results - see my journey in my journal. I too have about 70 pounds to go as well - and I want to run as well, so .....

Allison, thanks for the information on the book - It is just what I need. I have been thinking about running for a long time.

Blessings to all!!

I reserved a lottery spot for the NYC marathon and made the decision to run to lose weight. I have about forty or fifty pounds to lose. I started doing wai lana yoga and it's helping with flexability.

Indigo Girl,

I am 95-100% raw now, but I did lose most of my weight on 85% raw.

I have no doubt that you can run using Bob Glover's plan. Remember, the word CAN should never be followed with 'T.

Good luck!
