Hi, all! Been posting a bit so I thought I'd say hi. I saw Tonya Zavata speak last June, and stopped eating meat. Started trying a high-raw lifestyle and now I'm going for the 30-days raw. Anyone in MD want to start a support/pot luck group?

I am from the area also Beltsville MD :)
Okay, there's so many people around here...we really should get together and hang out for support and fun. Has anyone been to Yabba Pot in Baltimore? Fantastic vegan food, and a ton of raw options. They do a raw challenge, too.
Maybe we can all meet there for dinner or lunch.
V
Yes, I'm about 10 minutes from Yabba. Skai, the owner also hosts raw events also. I'd be down for meeting there and could possibly bring another friend that did Skai's 21 day raw challenge to join in the fun. Here's another event happening soon: (I hope I'm not crossing a boundary I'm not aware of by posting this. If so I'm sure someone will let me know. )
Hello everyone,
Join us Sunday February 4 for a potluck and short film!
Please encourage others to come and try raw vegan foods for the very first time. Everyone loves reconnecting with nature by eating pure and delicious raw foods prepared with love!
Fresh leafy greens, vegetables, and fruits detoxify us from city pollution, bring clarity to the eyes and mind, strengthen the immune system, balance digestion and elimination, give us good feelings, and bring us back in sync with nature's laws and rhythms.
6pm: Potluck - Bring a raw vegan dish that serves 4-6 people OR pay $10 to enjoy the food.
7pm: Excerpt from the movie: "Diet for a New America"
Michael Harris
4619 Keswick Rd. (rear cottage)
Baltimore, MD 21210
Tips for winterizing raw foods:
Add hot pepper like jalapeno, scotch bonnet or serrano to any dish to bring heat into the body. Also try adding ginger, cayenne, chili powder or garlic. Cumin is a wonderful earthy spice that is comforting during the winter months. Avocados and olives are great too! Desserts like raw berry pies are also a treat. (Please soak and then dehydrate nuts whenever possible for easy digestion when preparing desserts.)
Diet for a New America:
"Diet for a New America" is an inspiring movie about awakening our mutual responsibilitÿ as a culture to create a better world through our consumer choices. John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune gave up everything to live simply on his own farm and spread the word about what's really happening in the food industry. He found out the truth about the dangers of an animal based diet when he investigated the link between dairy products (& sugar), and the incidence of heart disease and diabetes in his family.
As many of you know, this country spends an amazing amount of its resources feeding and processing livestock. Did you know that the amount of livestock out numbers the amount of people in America? Over HALF of the fresh water in the states is used to wash away the waste of cattle and other livestock, and to provide them with drinking water. Much of this precious water is also used to quench the vast fields of grain used to feed the livestock. It takes 10 pounds of grain to make 1 pound of beef. Consider the huge amount of land used for this purpose!
The majority of this livestock is used to produce low quality beef, chicken, pork, and dairy. These are the so called factory farms you may have heard about. I don't even have to bring up the inhumane treatment of these animals to make a simple point:
Consumer demand of meat and other mass produced animal products is compromising our drinking water supply, altering the balance of other wild animals in nature, polluting our rivers, lakes, and streams, and effecting the integrity and health of our people.
Corporations will stop at nothing to get your dollar and make more profit, even if it means compromising the quality to fulfill demand. This compromise of quality has been going on for over 40 years and the effects are devastating.
It did not used to be this way! We used to have pure organic meat and dairy as a rule. We used to have small family farms over 40 years ago. Since then, the incidence of heart disease and diabetes has skyrocketed. Powerful corporate food lobbyists see to it that consumers stay in the dark.
This is such a huge issue.
If you eat meat or dairy, I hope that you choose your animal products very carefully at all times and encourage others to do the same. Ask the grocery where the meat or cheese comes from, even if the label says organic. Find out where you can buy from small organic farms, preferably local. Start a relationship with your local farmer.
If you are vegan, continue to spread awareness without judging others. You may not be able to stop people from eating meat or dairy, but you can help them make better choices.
All of us want to be healthy and happy. All of us want America to produce a quality life. All of us want to preserve America's beauty and natural resources.

Hi All,
Another recently raw and living in Maryland. I am so glad Alissa had provided this kickin' discussion board! Count me as another who obtained her excellent material one year ago, watched the DVD - but - only just recently began using some of her good suggestions. It took me awhile to get aligned to going 100% raw. I've found it necessary to do it slowly - along the way, eliminated meat, fish, dairy, white sugar, flour, and keeping vampire hours :D (what a difference a little rest can make!)
I look forward to participating in these forums - the wealth of information here is terrific.
