How do you cut open a coconut. I have never done this before. It is so hard I don't think my knife can cut this.
I just bought a coconut and was wondering the same thing :o

Is this a young (white outer) or mature coconut?

A little, but it doesn't waste anything...if I am careful. It's the only way I can get them open.

My brother is a chef, and he taught me a great way to do it (I had previously been using a cleaver to cut the cone point off, then to jab down and make a big hole). Get a large, sturdy serrated knife (like a big break knife). Slice a piece off the side of the 'nut so you can lay it flat on its side. Saw through the pointed top with the knife. If you find you can't go down further, gently tap the blade down with another knife (heavy, like a cleaver). Pop the top off and pour the water out, and scoop out the meat. Yum!
