Hey all, I was in Mother's Market on Beach Blvd, in Huntington Beach, California yesterday and they have tons of young coconut for 99 cents a piece. They looked really new and fresh. Just thought I'd pass it a long!
I wish I could get my hands on a fresh young coconut. The two that I've bought from my health food store in the past have both been soapy in taste and the meat was rubbery, which means they aren't fresh.

!!!! BEWARE Mother's Coconuts!!!!
I used to buy my coconuts at Mother's in HB and I would say 99% of the time they had gone bad inside. Purple meat... cloudy water... eeeewwww.
BE CAREFUL!! Keep your reciept just incase so you can get new ones for free. Nothing worse than anxiously cracking open a coconut to see it is purple inside!!!!!

I buy my coconuts at Whole Foods (Thousand Oaks), and they are really fresh, but not .99 cents!! I pay $1.99, but they are well worth it!!

I've bought about seven Mother's young coconuts. Only one was bad. The rest were delicious! I also bought some for only .69 cents at a big Asian market on Magnolia street in Westminster called ABC market. They were all good. I also buy my durian there.

Asian markets are definitely the best place to get them. I pay 79 cents each at the one I go to. Make sure the bottoms of the 'nut are not soft, nor moldy or purple. Also, if they're smaller, I've found that the meat tends to be more pudding-like. The larger ones always seem to have firmer meat, which is great if you want to make noodles and stuff.

*cries* funny you posted this today because I've just been looking at a recipe that uses young coconuts for noodles - these would be perfect for my mum as she has bad teeth and trouble chewing raw veg pasta. But you can't buy young coconuts in the UK. :(

I went back to Mother's market yesterday to buy some more young coconuts. The price has gone up to $1.49 :-( Oh well...
