Nope. Haven't tried it! But I really want to! :D
Plus I like your journal. People do read it :p

aww, thank you trinity! I read yours too but I can't comment because I have to log in or register or something... but I read it! I love how colorful it is! You're such a beautiful person!
anyway, back to the beans. haha!
My sister used to call me "beaner" because I LOVE refried beans so much, if I could find a recipe that's anything similar to sad ones, I'd be in heaven!

I've never tried Alissa's, but I (and many others here) have made this one that I found online a long time ago when I first started eating raw. It's really good, esp. with Alissa's Nacho Cheeze (I don't dehydrate mine and I blend in a vitamix (or blender) WITH jalapeno until smooth) and some flax crackers or raw corn tortillas!
Refried beans-I kid you not!
==============
Two cups of raw sunflower seeds, soaked overnight, which then = about four cups.
1/2 cup flax seed oil
3 Tbls. of raw nut butter ( I used almond, try tahini)
1 tsp. sea salt
3 tsp. cumin (key ingredient, don't even try it without!)
2 tsp. chili powder
1 Tbls. raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
Throw it all in the food processer, adding a bit of water as you go along until it is all smooth.

I'm going to try Alissa's version in 3 days, when my Chickpeas are done sprouting!
I'll let you guys know :)
I tried Alissa's and threw it out. I didn't care for it at all (and the recipe made A LOT). Not sure if it was the chick peas or what but I wasn't about to force myself to eat something that I didn't care for. I want to try the recipe that Rawkinlocs posted. I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE refried beans... mmmmm...

I've only started soaking 1/4 cup of chickpeas, so in essence, I'm halving the recipe.
Just a first-try safety idea :)

Rawkinlocs is right... This recipe is one of my favorites. Tastes just like refrieds..I've made it so many times I cannot count. :)
Enjoy....

hmm... I don't have chili powder and don't recall seeing it at my health food store. Can it be made without or is that also a key ingredient?

Yes- Chili powder is a pretty key ingrediant as well as the cumin IMHO..

I just found this recipe to make your own chili powder from winkopedia
Hope this helps...
cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon
paprika or other milder powdered chile, 1 tablespoon
ground cumin, 2 tablespoon
oregano, 1 tablespoon
garlic powder, 2 tablespoon
smaller quantities of any or all of the other spices mentioned above

Has anyone tried Juliano's refried beans? They sound very different from the usual recipes (usually blended sunflower seeds) so I'm curious to know what they're like.
I would eat the refried beans wrapped in a tortilla - either as a taco or a burrito
There's a taco/beans recipe here: http://www.rawguru.com/recipe15.html
There's a recipe for spicy bean tacos on Green Chef http://gliving.tv/greenchefs/sarma/Soft-Corn-Tortillas/
Does anyone know if these taste like refried beans or are different??
Thanks Bobbie... ok... there are 2 Tortilla/Taco recipes, which should I try? Anyone have any experience with either one or something similar?
Corn tortillas:
3 cups fresh corn kernels, cut from 2-3 ears, or thawed frozen corn
1 1/2 cups chopped yellow or red bell pepper
3/4 cup golden flaxseed, finely ground
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon ground chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt
2 teaspoons ground cumin
or
Taco Shells
2 cups golden flax seeds (ground very fine)
1 cup brown flax seeds (ground very fine)
1 cup sprouted sunflower seeds
2 tbs. minced sweet onion
3 tsp. minced garlic (with the skin)
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. cayenne powder
1 tsp. cumin powder
2 tbs. poppy seeds
Celtic sea salt to taste

I made corn tortillas once (different recipe) and I loved them. The flax ones might taste more like flax crackers? I'd recommend the corn ones. The original Mexican tortillas were made from corn. Invaders introduced them to wheatflour so they started making flour tortillas but the corn ones are still more common.
I just made some tacos. They came out WONDERFUL. So much better than the one with the chickpeas. Here is what I made...
Corn tortillas:
3 cups fresh corn kernels, or thawed frozen corn (I used frozen)
1 1/2 cups chopped yellow or red bell pepper (I used 1/2 of a red pepper)
3/4 cup golden flaxseed, finely ground
1 tablespoon lime juice
1 tablespoon ground chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt
2 teaspoons ground cumin
Mix all ingredients in FP then dehydrate for 3-4 hrs, flip and continue for another 1-2 hours
with...
Refried beans-I kid you not! (I halved the recipe and used sesame seeds for the nut butter)
==============
Two cups of raw sunflower seeds, soaked overnight, which then = about four cups.
1/2 cup flax seed oil
3 Tbls. of raw nut butter ( I used tahini)

1 Tbls. raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother)

and RP's gooey mozzarella cheese (modified a bit to suit my tastes)
I put a bit of "beans" in the center of a corn tortilla, then added some "cheese" then a bit of chopped lettuce. Even my husband, a major meat eater, liked it. Definite keeper!

Oh man I wish I had taken a picture for ya before I stuck 'em in the fridge! They're in an old coconut oil tub so it's all dark and black and well, if I hadn't cleaned up already I'd take them out just to take a pic for you :p Yum.
I looooove these sunflower seed based refried beans. Because I was a major "beaner" too ;)
I just made a variation on the above tried-tested-and-true recipe...
Sunflower seeds, 1/3 as many pumpkin seeds, 1/6 as many sesame seeds, lots of sundried tomato powder, fresh red bell pepper, soaked sundried tomatoes and soak water, lemon juice, ACV, water, lots of cumin and chili powder, tiny bit of salt and uh, I think that's all. Oh, fresh cilantro of course!Soooooo good.
This is the best ever batch I've made for resembling the real thing!
* As a related query, how long do you think these will keep? I'm wary of leaving stuff in the fridge much more than 2 days. Any experience with refried bean storage? *
Thanks - :D

Alissa's recipe, and it was good! To me, it tasted more like avocado than anything else, but I think that's because I'm used to gigantic avocados from Costco, and that's what I used, whereas this recipe was probably intended for a little smaller avocado.
I spread it on top of a portabello cap, and ate it....YUM.
I halved the recipe, and it was still waayyy too much for me to eat.

1 Tbls. raw apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
Can someone tell me what "the mother" is?
Can someone tell me what "the mother" is?
Certified Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar is unfiltered, unheated, unpasteurized and 5% acidity. Contains the amazing Mother of Vinegar which occurs naturally as strand-like enzymes of connected protein molecules.
What is the nature of the Mother?
The mother is the dark, cloudy substance in the ACV ú formed from naturally occurring pectin and apple residues - it appears as molecules of protein connected in strand-like chains. The presence of the mother shows that the best part of the apple has not been destroyed. Vinegars containing the mother contain enzymes and minerals that other vinegars may not contain due to overprocessing, filtration and overheating.

I made the standard recipe today - and it was nothing like refried beans. What am I doing wrong? Is my chillie powder wrong? I can't think what else could make mine different from yours. It tasted like sunflower seed dough, you couldn't even taste the seasoning, so I added the same amount of spices again (except the chillie powder) and it tasted better but still not refried beans :(
I absolutely adored tinned refried beans. I couldn't believe how tasty they were.

what's 'the standard' kind? do you mean rawkinlocs recipe that she posted here?
I haven't made them yet but I'm going to do so tonight. (with the rawkinlocs recipe) I've had my sunflower seeds soaking overnight! yay.. I'm excited and will tell everyone how it turns out.

Yes that recipe. Maybe English chillie powder is different?!?
I hope yours turns out well! Good luck.
Bobbie, while I absolutely loved the taco recipe that I made I would never compare it to SAD. I don't compare anything to SAD anymore. In my opinion... you're never going to get the same taste... hope you enjoy though!

I just made the refried beans using rawkinlocs recipe and omg.. its sooooo good! Obviously it doesn't taste JUST LIKE sad refried beans.. but it's a very close resemblance!
I changed the recipe up a little.. here's what I did:
1 cup sunflower seeds soaked over night
1 teaspoon flax seed oil
1 1/2 tablespoon almond butter
2 teaspoons cumin
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons sea salt or to taste - to me, refried beans are always a little salty
1 handful of cilantro - my aunt makes this awesome bean soup and adds cilantro so I thought I'd add that and see if it added any good flavor.
this stuff is great! I can eat spoonfuls of it straight (Like I could do with refried beans) but I can imagine how great it would be with corn chips and some tomato and lettuce and make a raw taco salad! mmmmmmm.
thank you rawkinlocs!!! :D

I really want to make these - for tonight. I threw in my seeds to soak but will only be able to leave them in for a couple hours... will it still taste ok??
In my experience sunflower seeds don't need that long to soak. 4 hours should be fine. I'm sure the recipe will come out great! Let us know how you like it.

Thanks, as always. That and my black forest cake pie were hits at the Superbowl Party.

Off to Arizona first thing in the am for a week's vacation. Take care all!

Oh My God! The refried beans are sooooo gooooood! I was licking the spatula and my fingers and made sure that I got all the "beans" out of my food processor before washing. Thanks Rawkinlocs!
So I made my own version of ground beef to go on top of the beans.
Raw oats
8 moist sundried tomatoes diced (The one I have are not hard but a little moist)
Chili powder to taste
Cumin to taste
olive oil
1/2 cup Warm/hot water (add a little at a time to soften oats) you will not use all of it.
1 big pinch of sea salt
1 cap of apple cider vinegar
here's the kicker: I use gloves so my hands don't get too sticky.
After mix oat mixture until it starts to take on the "ground meat" texture about 10 minutes. This softens the oats and mixes the spices to perfection.
I place this on top of the refried beans which are on a raw cracker or raw corn chips. Top with shredded romaine lettuce, fresh salsa or tomatoes and avocado.
enjoy

I tried it and threw it out. My husband ate a little of it, but then he was eating it with real tortilla chips and that might have helped. Once he ran out he didn't eat any more.

I have a question, instead of soaking the seeds can I ground the two cups instead like alissa says in her book, or will this ruin the recipe?
Where do I put the seeds when they're soaking?
Thanks.

I have made Alissa's and they were spot on.
Then my friend made them a few times and they were never good.
She followed it to a "t", too.
Another friend had no luck, too.
But I made them more than once, following the d's, and they were really good.
So, I don't know how to respond! lol!
