I am considering this diet, after seeing it on Tyra Banks Show. I liked what it stated it could do for me, let alone lose weight. I can not find the book in book stores. Is this the only place to purchase thebook? Also, Is this diet just eating vegies? what about meat? I admit i dont know too much about this diet, but like i stated it looks like it could be a good thing. But I do like to eat meat. Can someone help explain this way of eating more to me since I am unable to purchase the book from a local book store. If it is just eating vegies, why cant you eat chicken and fish? arent they good for you?

You don't eat fish and etc on a raw diet because it isn't raw. Most people probably wouldn't touch raw fish even to make sushi because it isn't vegan. Most raw eaters I would think are vegan.

No, there are a LOT of raw fooders who are not raw vegan/vegetarian...but Raw Food Talk is a forum that was designed to support a raw vegan/vegetarian diet.


Reddragonfly, welcome to the board! Yes Alissa's book is most commonly sold online, but there are a few healthfood/wholefood-type stores that may carry it. Now, basically the raw and living foods (plant-based) diet is when one's dietary intake is comprised of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouted grains and nothing is heated above 112-115 degrees.

The whole idea is that:

1. It is believed that plant-based foods are what are most biologically-appropriate for humans although due to many factors, we ended up adapting to eating other things including cooking our foods.

2. Cooking foods at high temps (this includes steaming) kills the nutrients and life force of the foods - rendering the food virtually useless to our bodies.

Some people go it cold turkey while others transition simply by adding in more and more raw foods and gradually eliminating cooked foods (especially the junkier foods) - you have to find the path that works best for you and your lifestyle but you will more than likely see the best results when you are eating all raw.

What Alissa promotes is the 30-day challenge. You don't have to make a committment straight away to make this a total lifestyle change forever...just try it for 30 days. See how you feel and if after 30 days you don't feel it's for you, you can go back to your desired way of eating or better yet, go to a healthier cooked diet that is comprised of a lot more raw foods.

But read the posts here, get the book (and if you can, the dvd too) and learn as much as you can! We're here to support you!

What about sushi? It is raw and I love it, can you do this diet eating sushi, some chicken and some fish? I know it wont be 100% but could it be the same?

You can - that is very much your own choice if you do or don't...but again, this forum and Alissa's approach to raw is plant-based...no raw fish/meat, no raw dairy nor raw eggs. There are raw diets that are geared towards raw animal products if you care to search for them on the internet and in other books.

But if you want to take the approach that Alissa promotes and teaches, those things are not a part of it. Our bodies are just not biologically designed by nature to digest meat, although we've adapted to it...it's still not optimal.

I haven't read it myself, but a lot of people suggest reading "The China Study" as it has studies, etc. on why it's not good for us to eat animal products.

But there ARE raw VEGAN sushi recipes and alternatives that many love and eat. We have some here in our recipe section and there is one in Alissa's book and other books and raw websites.

You may want to s-l-o-w-l-y transition to a raw diet, simply by adding lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds to your daily diet.

Try having an all fresh fruit breakfast. See how long you can do that, then add more raw food to other meals.

You can also go 100% which is what Alissa suggests, and giving it 30 days (the 30 day challenge).

When you totally stop eating animal foods, you totally stop craving them, so it is all up to you. If you leave a little in your diet, chances are you will crave them and backslide.

I think transitioning, by dropping one food at a time is effective. For instance, first drop all animal foods including fish, then all dairy and eggs. Then cooked grains, and finally cooked fruits and veggies and things like roasted nuts. Slowly eat more raw to replace what you have dropped.

But I wouldn't eat meat once a week, because it would be too difficult for me personally. I'd give up one type of food all at once and then move on to the next type as I'm comfortable.

As Rawkinlocs stated you CAN do anything you want. The questions you might wish to ask yourself are ~ do you want to do THIS food program or do you want to do YOUR program? IF you do YOUR program will you be coming here as so many do asking why you're not getting the results Alissa says one can have following HER food program?
