Hi everyone,

I just joined and am going through my first day on the raw food diet. All was going well until the afternoon hit and I CAVED yes I did! :( I needed my extra large coffee with sugar to alleviate my headache. If I was not working, I would have just crawled into bed and closed my eyes, but my job requires I be verbally coherent. *hee hee*

How do you guys combat the symptoms associated with detoxing, or what foods help with your intense need for sugar and coffee. If you have insights please let me know!

Thank you!

I had a 2 day migraine from Hades when I stopped coffee a couple of weeks ago....no relief in sight. I feel for you so much when you do this. I would get a break from it in warmish shower with water on my head and RP's brownies/Alissa's chocolate. (not at the same time ;) )

I also had to stop using my eyes so much and wore shades around the house...drink water water water. Good Luck...you can do it...

personally my biggest weakness is sweets. I could avoid all other cooked food but it was something about chocalate. Because im a busy student and work, i didnt have time to prepare raw dessert recipes. luckily i found out about lara bars that were yummy and seemed to satisfy my sweet tooth. its an all natural raw food bar. there are other raw food treats that seem to be popping up at health food stores and whole foods market also. this forum also has a huge variety of recipes to chose from if you have the time to prepare them, their really great! its good that you chose to live a raw food lifestyle but take your time transitioning to it. its very easy to binge if you dont. hope this helps.

Well I personally believe that it's worth it to ease off of caffeine, but not sugar. Caffeine withdrawal is less horrible if you cut back. First and second days have half regular, half decaf. Third and fourth days have 1/4 regular, 3/4 decaf. Fifth day all decaf. 6th and beyond, no coffee!

With sugar, however, I think even the little bit keeps cravings going. So it's best just to stop cold tofurkey. Rely on fruit as much as you can. Supplement with agave, honey as needed. It might take up to a week, but you'll find that you eventually don't have as intense physical cravings.

I know I'm feeling crazy detox headaches from havign dairy yesterday, which is nowhere near as bad as the caffeine headaches can be... Best of luck to you!

I feel you regarding chocolate, (I did not mention that, cause I was already feeling bad about the coffee *chuckle*)

Lara bars.........hmmm........*quickly orders some online* :D I am kinda in the middle of no man's land and will require additional resources to keep me on track. This is harder that I thought, and I am sooooooo filled with admiration for everyone on this site!

I was going to suggest cutting back on the caffeine too. I came off coffee 2 months ago and it was brutal. I had horrible headaches for 2-3 days and then other withdrawl symptoms for a few more days. I did it "cold", but have read it's better to eat some chocolate or drink tea with caffeine to kind of "ease" through the withdrawl from it. :) Good Luck!!!

Suggestion:

-You regulate your own detox....by eating a higher percentage of fresh, raw plant foods & juices if you are VERY comfortable....and going back to a level that you ARE comfortable with....and stretching from there....if your detox symptoms are too severe for you to function (THAT rather defeats the purpose! Ha! ha!).

I usually wait headaches out. My spouse thinks I'm crazy because once in a blue moon a headache will become so painful I end up throwing up. :(
I try not to take medications often because I want my body to fight its self. I dont want it to depend on syrups and chemicals to fight colds and flus and etc. I do suppliment and try to prevent from getting sick but the slightest bit of stress can sometimes give me headaches behind my eyes. And if it gets bad and I have to hold my head between my knees, like today, I give up and take an advil

Trinity, I do the same thing....next time try a chelated magnesium tablet, 250mg or two of em if one hasn't helped in about half an hour. At least no chemicals that way. Works most of the time for me. :)
