I am trying to get away from using plastic to store my food both for health and aesthetic reasons...and I was wondering if any of you know of some reasonably priced, attractive glass or ceramic food storage containers that are available online or in a chain store....both for refrigerated things and also for pantry things...

I am sure I will find something..have not got much time to run around..and thought maybe someone else had replaced their plastic and would have some suggestions...

Thanks so much....:D

I use a lot of canning jars. They are cheap, easily replaced and I've even gotten them at thrift stores super cheap. I like seeing the nuts and seeds in them. MOST of my "stash of stuff" I have in my freezer, or fridge in the bags that the online suppliers (like www.nutsonline.com, www.naturalzing.com) and others supply. I have very little counter space and what space I do have has my FP, smoothie maker, VM, sprouters, baskets of fruits, veggies, etc.

I use canning jars, too. Love the way the pantry looks all full of glass jars with yummies inside! Our HFS will also weigh your jars if you take them up there to fill so you don't even have to use a plastic baggie.....

Pyrex still makes similar glass containers with a glass lid.

I love old vintage refrigerator containers...they are usually glass squares or rectangles with glass lids. Some have lovely designs of fruits on them. The clear ones used to come with the fridge in the old days. Some are in pressed glass in colours. You can find them cheap in antique/thrift stores shops...ebay too.

For pantry perhaps old candy styled?

Hi RowanC.... Thank you so much!!! :D Are you referring to the ones that are the jar-type in the link above, or the other kind ..that are rectangular or square with glass lids? I may pick up some of the jar-type, but I am mainly looking for the other....I think they are so pretty..and so homey...:o ...

If you see them..I would be happy to pay 2 or 3 dollars plus the cheapest shipping..lol.. I am going to hhave to start souring the goodwills and such around here...

Thanks so much you all for your suggestions...:D :D :D

I just bought some really nice ones at Target yesterday. They are clear glass with silver screw top lids. They had 3 different sizes. :)

girlsmiley, I really like the anchor hocking ones...thanks! Perfect for the pantry.

This thread makes me happy inside because we are excavating historic homesteads right now. I'm finding anchor hocking from the 1930's and fridge containers, old ball jars and all sorts of things from the old kitchens...that we are all still wanting to use!

Hi all

Here's a site that sells alternatives to plastic -

Thought some of you may be interested.

I saw sets of canning jars at a local Value Village for $3.00. Maybe your local thrift shop will have some with lids you can take home and clean out. :p

Another something to look for at yard sales - vintage yoga makers. They often include 4 little glass dishes with glass lids. Ditch the rest of it, and use the containers.

I just bought a set of ramikins with plastic lids that are the perfect size for nut pates. Also found Pyrex containers w/ plastic lids at another store. I'm trying to get fairly modular containers to use in the fridge. Clear if possible, so I can see what's in them.

I bought a set of stainless steel mixing bowls last year that had plastic lids and came in 5 different sizes. Those work well, too.

I rarely use plastic.... not only for food safety, but I try not to support the petroleum industry if I can help it.

I'm fairly new to eating raw (a couple of weeks now). You can purchase the containers that's on Alissa's DVD at IKEA, although I've recently found them at thrift shops for $1 to $2 each. I also have the old fashioned refridgerator boxes. I typically find these at antique shops. I've been storing food in glass for a long time now. Thanks to my grandmother. She followed Anne Wigmore's raw food when she had cancer 30 years ago, so I grew up with all of her healthy tips. Her vet saved her life when 2 specialist told her she wouldn't make it. She even had me drinking wheatgrass juice when I was 8 years old. She's 86 now and looks wonderful! I also store food in the old fashioned canning fars with the attched lid and gasket. I really like these and I find many in thrift stores.

Do you have a Tuesday Morning in the area? I used to buy glass and ceramic containers there for very reasonable prices.

Ikea also has really nice jars with rubber gaskets and the metal closures, kinda like canning jars. And Michaels crafts has cheap Mason jars.
