can anyone share any other great ways to use it? and is it possible to eat too much?

thanks!

This was taken from vegsource.com:

Nutritional Yeast:
The Red Star stuff which is what people are talking about is a type of fungus grown on molasses and then pasteurized, dehydrated and more. From their website:

Lesaffre Yeast Corporation derives its primary grown nutritional yeast from pure strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown on mixtures of cane and beet molasses. After the fermentation process is completed the yeast is harvested, thoroughly washed, pasteruized, and dried on roller drum dryers. The special growth medium and unique drying process are the secrets to the exceptional performance and flavor of Red StarĀ® nutritional yeast.
Again, it doesn't really seem to fit the whole, fresh, ripe, raw, organic plant ideal well... It's not whole (due to the pasteurizing, dehydrating, etc.), not fresh for some of the same reasons in addition to it's long 'shelf life', hard to say whether it's ripe or not, it's not raw from the pasteurizing, probably not organic molasses and whatnot used in the processing, and being a fungus it's questionable whether it's a plant or not as well (as they are sort of a different thing - not an animal, but possibly not a plant either).

And this tells about all types of yeast (scroll down for nutritional yeast):

I use it to make "cheeses" and to thicken pates if I mess up and put too much water in the blender. =)

Again, it's one of those things where you pick and choose!

Oats? Cashews? Seasonings and spices? Agave? Lara Bars? Jarred nut butters? Maple syrup (found in MANY raw recipes)? Nama shoyu? Extracts (vanilla, etc.)?

You choose...how does it make YOU feel? Does it have the same effects on you as other cooked foods?

I'm sorry, I couldn't help it. I love Alissa, that is why I'm here. But when people write stuff like that, I just don't understand the logic there.

Some of the recipes do have some cooked components. That is why they are transitional. It doesn't mean they are going to kill you, but it doesn't mean they are raw either!

I have used nutritional yeast (not raw).

I stopped using Nama Shoyu (made from cooked soy, but then it isn't cooked later, but it contains wheat).

I will still use cashews (most of them are exposed to high heat during the shelling process thus not raw).

We all have to make our own decisions about stuff like this - based on our own preferences and knowledge.

YES YES YES... Exactly how I feel. Thank you Rawkinlocs!

I do use nutritional yeast on occasion as well as maple syrup etc. For me, raw is not an exclusive club where I HAVE TO BE 100% RAW or else. I do it to feel good, be healthy and to know that I'm eating the best I can. The little bit of yeast or maple syrup that I do use has never yet affected how I feel. I don't compromise when it comes to food however, I do eat all raw fruits and veggies, it's just a few condiments and to me (to ME) it's no big deal. The important thing is how do YOU feel?

Actually, yes, because knowing Alissa - she'd jump on something like a Durian!!! Um, the inside - soft part - not the outside! LOL!!!

Ouch! I don't know if I'd rather land in the squishy stinky gushy insdes or the spikey outside!

I'm so glad that we are all unique beings and we'll never exactly follow one person to the T! We just aren't made that way, even twins prefer different things.

I use it in cheese sauces and sometimes pesto. It is very versatile and you can sprinkle it on most everything!

Alissa is a "God send" and a miracle but every time someone gets all cultish
I just laugh :D

Remeber those Hale Bop (sp???) comet folks wearing the reeboks and black pants. Well that mess wasn't to funny but...

Well KEDS made a commercial after the incident talking about

"KEDS, the shoe for the level headed Chrsitian"

I think somebody lost their job behind that one, it only aired twice

But those comet folks went to the extreme and all, you know Jim Jones style

plus I had a brief season with a expatriot group, now in Israel... they are huge on dietary changes.

So humor is my way of dealing with the cult like stuff, people just take things a bit far sometimes. :D

Farts all gone now :o

:::BACK TO OUR ORIGINAL PROGRAMMING:::

I also enjoy nutritional yeast, but over time it's consumption increases my craving for salt which then increases my cravings for fries which then exposes me to meat flavors since fast food fries are typically fried in the same grease as nuggests and fish, which defeats my whole purpose of being 100% vegetarian.

As for the RAW part I don't have it all mastered yet. Still gotta finda an affordable source for an assortment of raw seasoning. Never bought NAma Shoya but I do use Braggs on my shrooms.

I don't eat nutritional yeast for many of the reasons people listed here.

Like Rawkinlocs said, you pick and choose what works for you.

I've now discovered I feel so-so with jarred stuff, but RAWsome with fresh, whole foods. For herbs, when fresh is unavailable, I choose Frontier herbs as they are raw.

This site is mostly a transitional site for people getting off SAD foods, and many of Alissa's recipes include borderline ingredients. That's clearly ok, as it's way better than a SAD diet.

I've been able to sprout the cashews I buy, so they're clearly raw, but anything I have to phone "a company" to ask if they are "really" raw, well, I'm not very assertive that way, so I just don't use it.

Tooty,

Might I suggest this seasoning. I make it in the dehydrator:

Dehydrate lemon and tomato slices, and chopped celery (you'll need a lot of celery, at least a head, since it shrivels up to practically nothing).

I usually try to fill a dehydrator sheet with each.

Once they are dried solid, grind them up in blender or coffee grinder.

Place 1-2 tbsp each in a spice jar with shaker top.

It's nature's sodium, very yummy!!!

what I should have said above was that I have used it in Alissa's and other recipes and not felt any adverse effects from it, so I will continue to use it.

Rawandnatural... interesting, you say you've sprouted the cashews you've bought. Were they the ones that were meant to be raw or plain old supermarket ones? I should try this too, would love to know, but haven't bothered as I just assumed that they wouldn't. I do use the conventional cashews, that's one of my concessions for raw.

Sharon, that's seasoning is very similar to what I do! Except for the lemon, a handy hint. I also put celtic salt in as this is tasty and seems to help with keeping the powder dry. And I pretty much use any veggies available.

Sharon In Colorado...

I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR A WAY TO MAKE THAT SEASONING!!!! My mother bought this seasoning from Victorian Epicure (my friend sells it) that is no-salt but has that salty tang to it. The ingredient that gives it that salty taste? CITRIC ACID FROM LEMONS!!!

YOU ROCK THANK YOU!!!!! I AM MAKING THIS ASAP!

The cheeses in the pure food and wine lasagna and ravioli contain nutritional yeast. The recipes are on Greenchef.
Maraw Happy Cow burger contains it.

I don't use cashews very frequently, but I had bought whole cashews at a bulk food store once, and had only tried it once, and they sprouted a bit.
Perhaps this doesn't work for all that I buy, and maybe it was a fluke.

I am personally shifting towards whole foods that I know are raw, and I'm still iffy about cashews. I tend to stick with soaked almonds or sprouted sunflower seeds these days when it comes to nuts.

Hey, y'all.

Just a quick comment about cashews...you *can* buy them raw, truly raw. Dave Wolfe's site has them, as does the Living Tree Community site.

I use it in tons of cheeses, pestos, I sprinkle it on crackers or throw it in them. It IS healthy. Agave nectar and rolled oats and cashews (unless buying them 30 bucks a lb) are not raw either. Neither is Braggs. NY is safe and smart to use, although B12 supplementation is not guaranteed from it, it can aid in it for many. I love the stuff. Mmmmm! I have a cooked mac and cheeze or cheeze casserole recipe for it if anybody wants it to make healthier cooked vegan cheezey dishes for their kids/family, who are usually not 100% raw. I eat it sometimes. It's fab!

I left a bag of nutritional yeast out the other night and woke up to find it smeared all over my kitchen counters, floor, and table top. One of my biggest food addictions is cheese, and I could unforunately eat almost a whole block in one sitting and definitely pay the consequences. I really like Alissa's swiss cheese recipe; it satisfies the fix for me, so I'll settle for being 99% Raw over issues like that. I also wouldn't make a blanet statement that nutritional yeast is healthy; sometimes I get a candida response from it.

Ertarox
03-29-2007, 01:23 PM
I know people who also get bad responses from tomatoes, bananas and more, all of which are healthy, though (and yet on Dr. Barnard's controversial foods list, interestingly enough - featured in his FOODS THAT CAUSE PAIN video). Sometimes it's not the food that is impaired or unhealthy, but our terrains. I know mine is/was! That is why we are all individuals! :-)
