I have been doing sit ups and crunches I think they are called?
Its when you cross your legs and lift them over and over.
I have lower back fat but my upper back is skinny lol.
What can I do to help tighten my lower back ;)

trinity - you should check out
www.t-tapp.com
It is an all over, lymphatic workout. I'm sure you can get the basic workout dvds on eBay.
It is awesome. It so well blends in with eating raw.
There are no weights involved. It is very cool. I've been to a few of Teresa Tapp's seminars, she is VERY knowledgeable! :D

toe touchers would get your lower back .
standing straight up , keeping legs straight
and bending forward while reaching arms
straight down to touch
or get near to toes as possible .
when you raise back up to upright
posistion your working lower back .
and you could also hold dumbbells in
your hands of say maybe 10 to 15
pounds each to make this exercise more
difficult .

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but as the saying goes "you can't spot reduce". You just gotta do some cardio and burn the fat. Bummer, huh? Eating raw and losing weight will help too.

Maybe I can spin around and around until the pudge evaporates off my back LOL!

Oh..
I guess it doesn't work like that. Or we would all be a bunch of spinning fools right about now. *Pictures everyone bumpin heads* Ouch

Thanks for the advice. I am going to add something to my nightly work outs :D

Bent over row (with weight) will help you build muscle in the middle/upper part of yourr back. Just below your shoulder blades. Be careful to support your lower back while doing it. And make sure to iniate the movement from those muscles, rather than jerking the barbell with your lower back or your arms.

True you can't spot reduce fat, but you CAN build muscle which will make you feel and look like you burned fat! :)

You can take a look here:

I second the bent over row. That and dumbell flyes (hold weights at sides, bend so your top half faces the floor - lift and lower slowly and with control).

Recently I read a magazine interview with a British TV Presenter and she said there isn't an inch of fat on her back because she does a lot of swimming.

You can spot build-muscle, but you cannot spot reduce fat. If you build more muscle, you're going to look a little leaner/firmer in that spot. However you're not going to just lose fat in that one area. The more muscle you have, the more fat you'll burn (all over) because a pound of muscle will burn more calories at rest than a pound of fat will.

Can lower back muscles be built? or is it an upper back muscle movement that makes the lower back look toned without actually building lower back muscle. I go to the gym and use them back Nautilus machines but I do it to make my back strong because my back used to go out once a month since having an epidural. I never did see results visually. I guess it's not made for that.

I have this problem as I've gotten older-when I was younger not so much. I think there are a couple of things going on.

genetics-if you have the "genes" to be an "apple" shape, and deposit fat there, that's where it goes

short torso body type-if we are "short waisted", fat is more likely to collect on our back

stress-high cortisol levels from stress also deposit fat on the torso

overweight-all of the above

so, just all over fat loss is the key, and working on core strength seems logical-also, the T-Tapp workout DOES address this stuff-I have her dvds, did the workout a little bit-she does know what she's talking about, I think.

for me, I know if I just hang in there, exercise regularly and stay on raw, it'll come off!

Do some deadlifts. You seriously need to keep your back strong if you're working out your front... otherwise you'll "bulge" forward in front because your back muscles will be too weak to keep you "straight."

I guess everyone has an opinion...mine is: more cardio, stay raw, do pushups...and other core strengthening exercises....eventually it WILL happen!
