View Full Version : Hubby killed my date

Tonight I put a few dates in a small bowl and carried them to my office. On the way, my little doggie, who is constantly under my foot, nearly tripped me. A little while later, while I was sitting at the computer munching on the dates, I heard my husband yell, "What the HELL!!!" followed by a big swaaaaaaaaaaaap! sound. I went into the kitchen. I must have dropped a date on the floor when I nearly fell over my dog. He thought my date was a roach....and....he.... *killed* it. He murdered my beautiful live food. Why on earth he'd think it was a roach is beyond me, since we've never seen one in our house. I had to laugh though.

Anyway, what is the difference between Medjoor and Deglet noor dates? I read a while ago that the Deglet dates taste like caramel, so I've always bought them. What do the Medjoor taste like?

Medjool dates are soooo delicious, they are larger and sweeter and have a softer flesh inside. I personally prefer them! Give them a try! Make sure to get them with the pit still in :) YUM

Medjools are super sweet and super succulent. I think that Deglets are drier and (not sure of this) less sweet.

Cheers,
Susan ;-)

Autumn, medjool dates look a LOT like Texas roaches. They aren't the same species we had up north. And the last place I lived was absolutely infested. It was disgusting. I had to throw away so much stuff because I didn't want to taint my new place.

And yet, and yet... they're still here! The dates I hide in the very back of my cupboard mock me. Every time I cut date pits out I have to fight the image of gutting a bug. Just the thought of it now makes me gag a little. I really have to focus on something else when I make recipes with dates in them. I can't imagine eating one by itself. Perhaps I should seek help?

Since no one else has replied with a similar experience I assume I'm weird. :D

Thanks for the info all!

Pixie, OMG I'm laughing but I sympathize! I don't think I'd be able to eat them after your experience either, unless I had chopped them up good!

Vixen, good going with the gaggle of girls. :p I probably would have said something that would make their mothers want to smack me.
