I was watching an episode of Daryl Hannah's Love Life called Funguy. She interviewed a scientist specialized in mycology and he said that button mushrooms and portabellas (the grown version of buttons) are toxic and cause tumors in people unless they are cooked above 450 degrees F
He also says that ALL mushrooms must be cooked, else their protein and structure cannot be digested by the human body. I know that "cooking" can mean many things, chemical via lemon juice or sitting out in the sun... but, I'm wondering now about the common use of raw buttons at salad bars, etc.
Anyone heard anything about this?
*Edited to add url to the episode! http://www.dhlovelife.com/v2/show/archive/index24.html
BTW, I looooooooooooove Daryl's website! I suggest if you haven't heard of it before, watch them all! :p
