Last night I made some apricot cookies from Alissa's book. I dehydrated them overnight and although they taste good, there's a slight "rancid" undertaste and I suspect the nuts were old.

I hate to waste anything, and they don't taste bad enough not to eat.
Anybody know if eating "old" nuts is harmful?

I sure hope I don't have to toss them!

Hey Rowan,

The exact same thing happened to me when i made Alissa's chocolate chip cookies. the walnuts must have definately gone rancid...what a horrible taste. I ate some of the cookies but then threw some out along with the rest of those nuts i had bought. I hate wasting too :(

Im not sure how harmful it is, but i dont think it can be too good for a person either.

Just thought I would share some information. I had worked in a health food store. The Walnuts, Macadamia Nuts, Pine Nuts, Pecans and shredded Coconut were always kept in the freezer section since they are nuts with a much higher oil content and tend to go rancid faster. Hope this might help you the next time you buy nuts. :)

hmmm....just thinking outloud here...I think I read this somewhere, like a yar ago....isn't true that rancid oils have lots of free radicals in them?...and nuts being a high/fat/oil food...perhaps there are alot of free radicals in your nuts? I don't know.

Hello RowanC,

Oh, I forgot that includes Brasil Nuts also. I am extremely sensitive so rancid nuts make me ill let alone rancid oils, so most oils I keep in refrigerator. And of course my nuts that are high in oil content are kept in the freezer while other nuts are kept in refrigerator. Hope this helps. :)

I would toss them.

I trust my body's judgment on things and if it doesn't make it through the taste test (after taste buds have realigned themselves to a pure state), I figure it's telling me that it doesn't want the stuff to go any further.

I keep all my nuts and seeds either in the fridge or the freezer. Same with my dates. My bags I use frequently of either nuts or seeds is in the fridge. The other supply is in the freezer. I read that when I first started reading about going raw. Plus a lot of HFS keep their nuts and seeds in their refrigerated section.

If nuts are in the shell, do you freeze them too? A friend gave me some Brazil nuts.
