I went to a local organic farmers market today. They have all kinds of things that are made on a local farm here. I bought a jar of raw tahini and when I tasted it, it was so bitter I couldn't take it. I didn't expect it to be sweet but I mean this stuff was disgusting.

The ingredients are only raw organic sesame seeds.

Could this stuff be bad?

Ewww yeah! I'd say it's bad. It should not taste nasty. Raw tahini should taste like if you were to take raw sesame seeds and chew them up. Kind of nutty, kind of sweet, but not like that, not bitter I wouldn't think... :(
Another thought. Is there a date on it when it was packaged, or is there a phone number to contact them? Maybe you could take it back...? That's a bummer...

Hi

Yes Tahini tastes pretty bitter, and actually can be pretty gross sometimes. Mix with a bit of maple syrup ^_^ INCREDIBLE when used to make "Peanut butter & honey sandwiches" (use your Raw imagination to make it raw & vegan - raw "bread" with maple syrup & tahini - soooo good! I never eat peanut butter or honey anymore)

It also tastes SOOO GOOOD when mixed with almond butter ^_^

Crazy Healer Lady? Do you think it tastes bad? I always like the taste of it. Now I don't know. Maybe to others it tastes bad, to me it always tastes good.
< sigh >
I guess everyone's taste buds are different, huh?

I adore the taste of tahini....I put it on Romaine or cabbage rolls w/veggies & I just really enjoy them. DH , on the other hand is not a big tahini fan. He said he thinks there is an *after* taste.. I think we all have different tastes..

Try Tahini -spread on flax crackers....topped with thin slices of cuke (I use a veggie peeler)..YUM... :D

Only sometimes do I not like the taste - usually the first two tastes, and by then I'm used to it, but I can't really eat it "uncut" O_O By that time I'm done with it.

On the other hand, I love sesame seeds O_O I never understand why the seeds taste different than tahini!

I agree with you all. Sometimes tahini can taste different. I have had it before and don't remember it tasting this bad. I could just imagine that if I used this stuff in a recipe, it would be a disaster.

I think I am going to take it back and try another jar.

Tahini can be a little bitter. I usually use small amounts in my salad dressings. I have come to love tahini, but it does take some getting used to!

yes, it can be a bit bitter. We grew up with tahini and honey sandwiches. Divine!

You can make halva: 1 cup of tahini, a few spoonfuls of honey, some carob powder, put it in the fridge and cut it in squares. Very rich!

Unhulled tahini, especially black tahini, can be very bitter. I find it varies though. I've had reports from others that tasted it fresh off the press and said the bitter level was normal. All depends on brand I guess.
