Hello all,

I've been on a solidly vegetarian diet for over a year now, and recently decided to go all the way and switch to raw vegan food only. It's been a week now, and I had been going fine, with increased energy in the gym, mental clarity, and a feeling of pronounced calm. Over the last two days, however, my emotions have gone haywire and I've been feeling lots of intense rage...even hatred...mixed with sadness. Then Last night catapaulted me into the twighlight zone, with weird uneasy sleep, a very slight fever and a weak feeling, EIGHT visits to the bathroom , and some cold symptoms which disappeared as quickly as they had appeared.

I used to have an annoying habit of biting the inside of my left cheek. Now that seems to have disappeared practically overnight, and my skin has experienced mild outbreaks on the left side of my body only, which is kinda strange. Do these sound like detox symptoms? Is it okay to have to go to the toilet eight times in the space of eight hours

Thanks.

I read your post and felt as if I wrote it. I've been raw almost 3 weeks and feel the EXACT symptoms. My cheek biting has abated - for a few days I didnt even do it. In fact, i woke up and for whatever reason my tongue ran across my cheek and I was shocked not to find that "bite scar" bumpy thing.

I also have felt like I've been on an emotional rollercoaster - angry for a few hours, then really tired/crabby and truly "spacey". I am hoping they are detox symptoms. We shall see.

Best of luck to you - keep me updated on more. I unlike you have not gone to the bathroom except one or two days as many times as you have. I feel backed up right now - so not sure if that is one of my symptoms.

Robert

I hesitate to reply because I am no authority. For my body - yes that would be detox - but I have been going through some stuff that the doctors don't recognize and all the raw food sites I have been to also do not recognize. I have concluded that it must be detox. The part that you state which concerns me is the breaking out on one side. That might be something different. You may figure it out down the road. It could even be something as simple as for example if you sleep on that side and are sweating maybe toxins from residual fabric softener - just to give you an idea what a variety of things you may have to look at to find the cause. Generally with my body - if I break out on one side for some reason I almost always have a corresponding break out in the exact same spot on the other side. I think it is great that we can share our observations here and find out that our bodies are not wierd! Or if they are - we are not the only ones. I don't even know if doctors know that the body will expell toxins on both sides evenly like that.

Sounds like detox to me! What were you eating before? I've had several detoxes, usually not severe (sweating junk). I have had currutaca; it meant I was getting rid of the bacteria for digesting cooked food.

crazy......i just took note that i havent been biting the inside of my cheek either. the dentist actually told me once it's dangerous because it can lead to mouth cancer, apparently all the biting mutates the cells.... not sure if they just really wanted me to pay $600 for the mouthgard that sits in my cabinet all alone.

The one thing i've learned from reading fasting posts and such.... try to notice if the symptoms go away after you...make one of those 8 trips to the bathroom.... i know the master cleanse diet always states that the detox problems you have one day should leave your body in the next mornings elimination. but i have read many times they can include emotions..so i think you are ok:) if some persist for more than a week or so, maybe you could look into a new food you are eating that may be disrupting your system a bit. good luck:)

Yes, same here. The inside of my cheek feels smooth and almost completely healed already, after two or three days of not wanting to bite it. The thing is, when I was biting, the more it hurt, the more I wanted to bite. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a connection there with people who intentionally self-injure/mutilate. Cooked food, and the accumulation of toxins/assimilation deficiency problems it creates, has a lot to answer for I tell ya.

My instinct is that they are, even though I've struggled with my emotions since childhood. That said, I've also been eating cooked foods for that long so I reckon that's the key. But being new at this, you know how it is, you get doubts and so you want to hear from others who might be going through the same thing. Hopefully that they are detox symptoms proves to be the case, as you said.

From the little bit of reading I've done, that is a regular feature of detoxing the body. I think it depends on what your diet was like before you switched to raw food, and therefore how much of a shock to your system the swtich is.

Best of luck to you - keep me updated on more.

Thank you, you too, I will, and thanks for replying :)

Good suggestions there, thank you, and things I never thought about since I've been solely focused on looking for causes from my recent change of diet. Thing is, I NEVER get outbreaks on my body; I used to get them on my face in my teens and early twenties, yes, but never anywhere else. Hmm.

I was eating pretty much what I eat now, except I've cut out brown rice, durum wheat pasta and organic rye bread, which I looove the taste of. My body is curently craving its daily helping of these carbohydrates, especially rice. So far, I've been able to resist, but it's hard since brown rice is a fairly healthy food as cooked foods go. I recently came across an interesting article online about how cooked foods reduce your ability to assimilate the food you've eaten. It's called 12 STEPS TO RAW FOODS, by Victoria Boutenko, and has really helped me through the cravings. I appreciate your reply :)

Greetings sbaker :) , thanks for the reply and advice, much appreciated. You know, the cold symptoms (mainly just the sniffles) have disappeared already and so has that nauseous, feverish feeling I had during the night. I've just eaten my first meal of the day and the weakness seems to have gone too. My emotions? Well, I don't know. I kinda feel like I'm walking an emotional tight rope right now, and since I didn't have to go to work today, or attend to any other business outside, I decided to stay indoors to reduce the risk of my getting stressed out  I haven't really added much to my diet since switching to raw food only...except pears. I'm also eating more bananas, since it's such an excellent source of quick energy for me. But yeah, feeling a bit better now. Eight times in one night is something though isn't it? That's gotta be some kinda record heheh! :D

Over the last two days, however, my emotions have gone haywire and I've been feeling lots of intense rage...

I've just been shouting and swearing, kicking off my shoes, hitting the walls and slamming the doors (yeah, I bet you'd all be running away from me now, if you could!)... All this because my fiancé wouldn't help me carry my shopping bags to the door. Even though, as it turned out, I could easily carry all of them myself, anyway! Did anyone say irrational???

I did a major detox in September and thought I was going to get away with it more easily this time - apparantly not! But then I have been eating an unprecedented amount of junk in the meantime...

I'm also really happy to hear about all the people that have managed to kick the "cheek-biting" habit on raw - I have been doing this for years, most of the time I'm not even conscious of it, but the wrinkles around my mouth speak for themselves... I haven't stopped doing it, unfortunately, but I think I am doing it less, so I really hope I will! :)
