hey folks,
in some recipes i see it specifies "golden flax seeds". i haven't seen those avaliable anywhere around where i live. do you think it'd make a big difference if i substituted normal darker flax seeds instead?

No. I think its more of a colour thing. I have both but I dont think there is much of a difference.

I find the golden flax has a milder taste, the brown can be a bit overpowering in some recipes, the golden is just milder, nicer. I prefer the golden flax if I can lay my hands on it.
Maybe do a banana search on the forum, there have been a couple of similar questions about the golden vs. brown flax ;)
cheers,
madmel

You can sub them but they do taste different. I personally prefer the darker ones but since the most recent bag I bought is the golden, I've been mixing 1/2 and 1/2. Don't much care for the golden alone.

I also prefer the golden; they are milder and, to me, actually taste good. I don't care for the brown; they have a 'gaseous' taste, if that makes sense. A sort of light flavor. I suppose similar to raw broccoli that's sort of overgrown, old or "harsh" flavor.
Best,
I also prefer the golden flax. I think it has a sorta "nutty" taste. I agree that the taste is milder than the brown flax.

I also prefer the golden as they're milder. I once made flax crackers with all dark ones and they were too heavy for my taste.

Thankyou madmel for the suggestion to banana it! I did and found the same sort of feedback. And thanks to everyone for helping me understand they are different in taste. I guess because I can't find golden flaxseed around the place that I'll just have to love brown flax! But thanks for clearing up that they do the same job with a different taste :)

I prefer the golden seeds. I order them in bulk on line so that I always have them on hand. They have a light nutty flavor that I prefer. Every time I attempted to use the darker ones they tasted ransid to me. Maybe it was where I purchased them from. I love the flax crackers with the golden flax seeds. They are a staple for me!

Well last night I made Rawkinlocs' Cinnamon-Pecan Rolls WITH ground up brown flaxseed (when the recipe calls for golden). There was no yucky taste that bothered me, they worked fine the recipe is to live for!
