question...I'm a nursing mom. I don't have any money to buy groceries until thursday. I'm trying to figure out if I have enough raw food to last me(and not put my milk at risk) (so, 3 days) this is what I have, spaced out do you think it's enough? I want to go for it, but I'm new to raw foods and don't want to jeapordize anthing.

10 apples
about 2 oz. almonds
4 green peppers (starting to go bad)
about 8 carrots
2 cups of lentils that I can sprout (if I learn how first :o )

then I have these foods that I can't imagine eating straight raw, but I may not have a choice

huge bag of potatoes (maybe 5 pounds)
3-4 onions

what do you think?

If that is all you have until Thursday, then you will probably be needing to eat the cooked potatoes to fill up. The caloric value of all the food you have isn't much for a nursing mom.

Everyone's different, but if it were me, I'd be eating a ton of bananas and other juicy fruits, and a lot of greens. I personally would not be eating green peppers as they are unripe red peppers, carrots are okay but I wouldn't really make a meal out of them, and beans can be upsetting to a digestive system.

Think of water rich fruits and veggies. Bananas, oranges, pineapple, melon, persimmons, cucumbers lettuces and other greens, celery, etc. When you nurse, you often need to drink a lot of water so getting water through your food is essential.

Also if you are thinking in terms of calorie requirements, the least amount you need is your weight times 10. (ie 150 lbs. x 10 = 1500 calories) then you need to add more for your activity level.

Since you are nursing you probably need to make sure you are getting at least that.

Happy nursing!

Doesn't look like it's enough to be a balanced diet to me. I tend to eat by the rainbow and try to get foods of all colors each day. The lentils will take several days to sprout, so they won't be much good to you. Potatoes can be eaten raw. My mom and daughter eat them out of hand like an apple, with a bit of salt on them. Or they eat slices soaked in salt water. I don't care for them this way. You could dehydrate them into chips, but I didn't much care for these either, although there was a point before they reached the chip stage where they were warm and soft and tasted like mashed potatoes.

If I were you, I'd eat whatever else I had in the house raw or not just to get some nutrition until I could buy more food.

I did not produce enough milk when I was breast feeding and it could be because from the start I was not eating enough. My daughter cried and cried and could not be put down by herself at all. So I wound up taking care of her and not me. I went all day without eating more than a handful of cereal or a piece of cheese (I wasn't on a raw diet back then) until my husband came home so I could fix dinner.

I agree...it's not enough food. Please get someone to shop for you...friends, relatives, neighbors. And drink lots of water; and when you think you've had enough...drink some more! Best of luck. Nursing is such a rewarding experience!

thank you ladies, like I said it's just until thursday when I'll get $$ for groceries and I've definitely got reserves :D (from my hips, you know)...I just sliced a potato and salted it to see if I could hack it and it wasn't as bad as I remembered (my step-mom used to eat raw taters)...honestly I would ask someone to buy us food, but it's getting embarrassing and I just can't do it this time. my husband is a truck driver and is home every two months and sends money weekly but didn't get a paycheck last week  anyway.....

I just realized I've got some barley--for future reference can you sprout that?

if I ate the bag of potatoes...that's like 3000 calories :o oh and I've got a bag of flax seeds

Me, I have no problem with raw onions. I know some people do, though. I usually buy green onions and leeks because I like the green part better than the bulb.

I would not attempt to eat a whole bag of potatoes raw at once. They contain some solanine, which is toxic.

If you do ask someone to help you out, get some leaves of the cabbage family and some different fruits. Coles are high in calcium and very nutritious; they are one of my winter staples.

If you are looking to get some money try cashing in your change you have around the house. I'm sure you could find a couple dollars for some bananas and a bag of carrots to juice. Just an idea!!! Good luck sweetie!!!
