View Full Version : Q: Raw milk & products & eggs?

I have known that pasteurised & homogenised milk is basically poison for some time and read a lot about the benefits of raw (milk), so we got ourselves a milking cow and have been having organic raw milk. I was also making kefir, yoghurt & cream cheese.
Since finding out about the raw food diet, I haven't been having any (couple of weeks now) and we are not sure what to do with our cow! I gather it's not a part of this diet? I would just like to understand why and maybe be pointed in the right direction to read about it. I do realise that cows milk was designed for calves & guess that's why we are now questioning it. My 2 yo has always loved it, but I have noticed since he hasn't been having it (although asking all the time!) that he hasn't been getting an itchy nose all the time - I have suspected that maybe the dairy was affecting him with a few little allergy symptoms.
What about kefir? Does anyone make coconut milk kefir? Is this considered OK on a raw food diet?
Also, what about organic free range eggs? I guess we have to sell our chooks too.... Again, I have read so many good things about them - can anyone point me to where I might find some answers...thanks!

Hi Maree,
You are correct in that dairy and eggs are not a part of the raw "vegan" lifestyle. To find out more about this, you might wish to read Alissa's mission statement.
Apart from that, there's a site call www.notmilk.com (I think it is. I'm SURE someone will correct me if it's not) which may give you some insights. With all the propaganda from the farm industry it's understandable why you'd be confused.
You may also wish to read a book called "The China Study" for more information on animal products and their effects. John Robbins very first book will give insight also.

Lots of people on the raw diet do eat raw dairy and eggs. I'm vegan but only for ethical reasons. If it was just a question of health I would eat eggs and kefir.
Some raw foodists have no problem with the animal-ethics issues but are vegan because they think its healthier. Others like me think its healthier to eat raw animal products but won't for the sake of the animals.
I've no doubt that on cooked diets vegan is healthier, but I don't believe that's true on raw diets. (Dogs are healthier on cooked vegan than cooked meat diets, but a dog wouldn't do well on raw vegan. Humans fare better because they're not carnivores like dogs, but I still don't think raw vegan is optimum.)
The nature's first law forum is a messageboard of raw foodists, about half are vegan and half eat animal products.
Having said that, I would drink goats milk rather than cows.
Whatever you decide, please don't sell your cow to somebody who will kill it!!!! Please!! Maybe you could keep her as a pet or sell the milk to your friends and neighbours.

I would definately read The China Study. I'm reading it right now. It was the largest study of nutrition ever conducted and the results are crystal clear. In every study they conducted it was proven that animal protein, (whether from meat or dairy), is harmful to humans.

Every once in a while somebody comes with raw yolk and kefir deal. I am guilty as well. I was making kefir. I am off dairy products for the last 4 month. No more congestion. You can make >kefir> from almond milk. But what for? If you want freindly bacteria, take supplement, eat fermented cabbage, but not dairy. Casein is bad. Egg yolk has a lots of good qualities, but definetly not vegan. Some of the naturopath gurus suggest to eat raw yolk in order to get B-12. Again take a small dose of supplement, rather than eat yolk and think every time about poisoning yourself with e-coli. I change my views 180 degree toward more vegan approach and it is working. I am still alive and doing well (thank God).

You cannot compare dogs and human. Totally different digestion system. Human can be compared to primates.

DEFINITLY read the China Study. Animal protein is NOT part of a truly healthy diet. I am vegan for health reasons not animal rights, meaning if we really needed to eat animals for health I would.

Raw Food Talk does not advocate nor encourage the consumption of animal products, raw or cooked. The majority of the posts in this thread give indications of resources to read more on why it is not a good idea and therefore, I will close this thread but leave it up so that anytime this question happens to come up again, it can be used as a reference.
But we will not get into a debate about whether or not it is healthy or acceptible because this forum simply is not in favor of it as the rules have been set forth by the forum adminstrator.
Thanks!
