I want to make the rawviolies but I have no way to slice them really thin. I know I need a spiral slicer or something and I was hoping I could go to K-mart or Walmart and find something. Does anyone know if I can buy some kind of slicer there that will cut the turnips super thin?? I really wanted to make them today.
What I've been using is just a vegetable peeler. The food processor makes slices too thick and I don't want to waste the money on a spiral slicer. I sometimes have to cut the veggie depending on how wide the slice is. It may not be perfectly round as you might need to cut the edges of the turnip but it's a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of new tools. I have actually been wanting to try this recipe as well... just have to see if there are any turnips in the store near me...
You could probably find an affordable mandoline at one of those stores..... I just got one, and it rocks! Slices turnips and all other veggies in nice, uniform thinness!

JGex, what store did you get your mandoline at, and what brand is it?

I just saw a new mandoline at Goodwill.
You know, if any of you want to email me with a wishlist, I shop at Goodwill regularly and am always finding RAW goodies like food processors, mandolines and even dehydrators.
And honestly, I wouldn't consider a spiral slicer a waste of money. If you only make $7 an hour working, it can pay for itself in the 30 seconds it takes to spiral a zuccini or turnip compared to slaving with a knife and not getting slices thin enough. It's one appliance I wouldn't be without.

In Canada many kitchen stores have $10 basic mandolines for slicing. I have upgraded to a $60 one (it was worth it) but the cheaper one worked well too. Just keep your eyes open and you can find one!

I went to K-Mart and found a mandoline for $10.00 (Martha Stewart). It worked great. I sliced the turnips paper-thin and made the rawvioli. It's really good. I have alot - so I hope it will keep a couple of days in the refrigerator.

Many people freeze them too!
