LET'S RUN RAW 2007

Are you a runner? Would you like to become one????? How do you start? is the question I am most often asked.....well, just do it-- Pick 'em up and put 'em down (my dad's advice to me prior to every marathon....it's kind of a tradition now ;) ).....go as slowly as you need to to get started.... I rec. you start with little goals.....running between phone poles, etc....then go for time (Start with 15 minutes and build up gadually...)

Want a goal? I am a race director for a 10K (that's 6.2 miles) the first Saturday in August here in my area. You can come and run it ;) ....or find a race in your area! If you come to my race I promise to have a post-race raw buffet!!!!
I'll be your "cyber coach".....LET'S RUN INTO 2007!!! :D

So glad to see you join in...I read your inspirational story! Rawk on! When is your next race? Mine is 1/14/07....Phoenix Rock & Roll Marathon!!!
Fall marathon????? Hmmmmm, a smaller sized one may be more beneficial for "recognition" as raw foodists???? I'm in!

I want to run a 10K by August!!!!! I can run a 5K now, but get tired if I do too much more than that--- this is my goal!

NF... I'm supposed to be doing LA in March... ran in to some obstacles that put my training behind. It's a question mark right now. But I'm sure I'll be doing at least a couple throughout the year as part of the RunRaw Team. The Team is going for BIG marathons in hopes of spreading the word about the miracles of RAW!

FY... shoot! I'm headed up to Wisconsin on Saturday. Friday evening may be a possibility. Let me know!

I want to run a 10K by August!!!!! I can run a 5K now, but get tired if I do too much more than that--- this is my goal!

Philly is about 6 hours  from us...we had people from there at our race last year! Go for it!! (or should I say Come for it!)

FY-I know you're already running :D daily but for the namesake of the thread we'll staart posting 1/1/07 don't ya think?
Although I have this New Year's tradition with my best friend. Since we are all "off" on New Year's Day (not from drinking or eating too much in my case but from disrupting my sleep pattern by staying up till past midnight! I am usually "out" at 9 pm!) She and I have this annual 10K walk loop that we do....but I run everyday so my running will actually start for the year on 1/2...

I just wanted to start the thread early to "drum up business"....get some runners motivated and networking here....

How many miles did you guys run in 2006? I am proud of myself this year! :D For starters I broke my leg as some of you remember on 1/5/06 (almost a year ago) the day we were leaving to go to run the Disney Marathon weekend :( ....metal plate, 4 screws, + 1 rod later and was told I probably wouldn't run again...THAT was devestating.......but when my stubborness took over and the raw food continued to heal me from the inside out I emerged a new more appreciative runner....Of course I have to brag not for me but for raw food because I was walking on my own after 4 1/2 weeks and running at 5 weeks.....and ran a half marathon 3 1/2 months after my accident.....the rest is raw history....In 2006 I have run 2 full + 2 half marathons and logged over 2,100 miles SINCE MY ACCIDENT so I am proud of being able to do as much as I have! I "share" this not really to brag but to inspire!!!!! So many people think they "can't" run because they think it needs to be at a certain speed/certain distance/certain form/////blahblahblah....just do it.....If you can walk you can run! When I started running afain after my accident it was a limp step limp step limp step on my treadmill at about 2.5 mph!!!!! I still don't run as fast as I used to but it doesn't matter anymore...I run because I CAN!

ANYONE READING THIS WITH THE ABILITY TO WALK CAN RUN.....NO EXCEPTIONS!

There are many experienced runners already joining this thread like KMIk and Forever Young.....so join the team and run raw into 2007!!!!!{{can't you just hear the "Chariot's of Fire" theme song in your head right now???}}

Ta-DAHHHHH...just tallied up my 2006 mileage---2,232 miles....I am supposed to "rest" tomorrow but may need to at least get 8 more in to top off the tank at 2,240!!!!! My goal was 2,006 for 2006....guess I beat that even with the broken leg!!!! Guess I should aim for 2,500 for 2007???? Sounds fair! Happy Trails!

ANY OTHR RUNNERS? or RUNNERWANNABES out there???

Yesterday about 3 hours in to my 4 hour run I was waning on energy....Granted, it was snowing like crazy and my clothes were getting heavier and icing as I trudged along and I know that took a lot out of me....I recovered fine and everything AFTERWARDS but I am still searching for ideas about what to do/have after a couple of hours...I HATE carrying a water bottle and actually never get thirsty because I am so hydrated from all the raw food.....I made myself eat a banana + "organic food bar" + a "smoothie" a couple of hours BEFORE my long run yesterday in the hopes it would kick in when I needed it.... Hmmm? maybe I need raisins/dates next time?

Wow, you're a crazy girl!! :p I, like you, don't like to run holding onto anything. I did buy one of those belts that holds your water bottle and has a pocket for food. But they do kind of bob up and down and that annoys me like crazy!!!!!! I can't run more than 10 miles without water. I get really, really dizzy.

me! me! me!

I have actually gone to the gym to run on the treadmill for the last couple of weeks. But I am anywhere near you gals!! I am overweight after the 3rd baby, I was raw during the end of my pregnancy and I had actually lost weight, but when baby came, oh, dear! Now she is almost 9 months and I want to loose some of the weight before she is a year old.

As for my running? I do treadmill because the weather sucks here (N.Ireland), plus I don't know where to run outside, I haven't seen many runners here. There is a running club but I want to join when I loose at least 20 lbs. My goal is a 5K in May, it is called Race for Life, a charity run for cancer research. There are a couple of other events in March and April, in case I find my shape before May.

It is nice to have inspiration, that group is exactly what I needed.

Thanks!

Esther

Oh Di I mentioned a trip to Kitto Marina and DH is open to it so as Summer nears I will get a trip plan together ad pray we can do it ! ... :D

I am going to post my mileage as I go along....I am by no means an "expert" just an evolved runner of sorts with experience....However, I am posing the first question of the year...RF I am sure you were right about the dehydration thing after my long runs. I guess because I eat raw all the time I am not thirsty but my BODY definately loses several POUNDS of fluid during a long run and just as a calorie restricter's metabolism slows to prevent starvation I believe my body does something similar with water.....I am going to work on drinking more water and see if that helps.....and yes ((sniffle sniffle, dragging feet)) I will bring along water for during my long run even though I HATE to carry things.....I need to "practice" before the race in 2 weeks  so I will try to drink 4-8 ounces each hour after 90 minutes.....as you can see, dehydration actually causes weight gain fluctuations....I went from 141 to 148.5 in a day....after running 23 miles! (my rings are tight and feel like sausages! and I have faithfully stayed 100% raw and plan too ALL YEAR!!!! It HAS to be my body in defense mode....At any rate. My 2007 goals are to include a liquid fast on Mondays (today) and fruit detox on Tuesdays + dh and I start our Garden of Life 10 day cleanse tonight and I plan on doing a liver flush this weekend (with epsom salts  ) So, for all you runners, it's never too late to learn something new...Stay hydrated !

NFrawRUNNER, Something to think about, try celery and carrot juice before and while you are running. It's not so much that you are thirsty or not, it's great for the body. Drink it early in the run to get the benefits during the latter part of your run. Well off for my 6 miler today. Happy running :D Forever young

I will do that-thanks for the tip!
Today would have been a run day but my best friend and I ALWAYS walk on New Year's Day so we went on a 6 1/2 mile walk together in the balmy NY weather! (We are used to blustery New Year's Day walks-not THIS! :) ) I am trying to juice fast today but felt off so I did have cantaloupe earlier and 4 apples just now. Now I think I can go back to water for the rest of the day....guess I just needed SOMETING in my body besides water or I drank TOO much water. I felt nauseated for awhile. I'll try the juice in the a.m. How often do you/how much do you drink FY? I think if I have it prior and then 4 ounces or so each hour that should help don't you think? I go by my house every 20 minutes or so in my weekday runs so I'll probably just stash it by my house and get it on my way by :p I am finally catching on after 8 years of running! Happy trails all!

hey guys..im curious..did any of you have a lot of pain when running prior to raw? i used to play traveling soccer and would run a LOT, but the past couple years running began to hurt my neck/shoulders a LOT and its now to the point where i cant run at all :(

i loveee running and want to get back into it (i used to do 5-7 miles a day)..and am wondering if going 100% (ive been high raw but am going 100% for 2007) will help me out with this? any experience with this?

id love to do a 10k by the end of the year and want to get rid of the pain!

I would advise you go see a good chiropractor to get evaluated and start from there! I see mine faithfully and run PAIN FREE....and don't forget I broke my leg last winter and was pretty much told my running days were over. Well, he has helped me recover and retrain my body once again! Most people are out of alignment and if you are running that will of course aggravate any alignment issue you have. Stretching also makes a big difference. It is something I faithfully do now where before I just ran ran ran....I guess old age and injuries make one wiser!!! [[lol]] :p

When I was heavy into weight training AND running I had more painful parts. Now that I favor running over heavy weights I am pain free ! I thinking doing both at a high level is very stressful on my body ! As Di said maybe something you have done has you out of alignment ? A Chiro may help or maybe some MSM in the diet too. That is good for the painful joints, it sort of lubricates them.

Infared sauna? Do you guys own one? Sounds interesting. Is that the same as a steam room? My husband uses a sauna and steam room daily before and after his 1-2 mile run at our YMCA...Is that the same thing? If so, I am soooo there! I don't know what magnetic chi gong is either??? Yes we own a infared sauna, no it's different, look up the infared sauna on the internet it's a lot different. We have a whole gym in our basement, weights, infrared sauna, treadmill ,jacuzzi :D . Magnetic chi gong is doing chi gong standing on one inch thick magnets, it is to help the energy flow through your body, you can really feel the energy coming off those magnets. Forever young

Jan 4th.

Run/walked two miles according to schedule. I was not very energetic though, I didn't sleep well last night, just couldn't sleep. Is that a detox symptom?

So I skipped the rowing. Must go to bed earlier tonight.

Esther-If you are detoxing it will most definately make you more tired (your body is working double time on the inside ;) ) + if you just started exercising your body is also saying hey, what are you doing! However, I sleep less now and am good on about 5 hours a night but I've been raw since August '05...
Sleep more if your body is telling you to...

I ran 8 miles this morning and felt great! :D I am on day 4 now of the Garden of Life's 10 day cleanse + I AM SO EXCITED THAT MY ORDER CAME IN from Alissa's company. :p See, my husband gave me $ for Christmas ;) which allowed me to buy a recumbent bike (now I have a 5 pc. gym!) AND everything I wanted from Alissa's site....the book (finally), raw cacoa, raw carob, enzymes, agave, coconut butter, the Spiralizer, and MACA which I satarted last night and used to use a while back! I am pumped. Because of my menapausal and adrenal issues I am hoping the maca and enzymes will build me back up! Maybe it's psychological but I feel better already! + it is beautiful here in NY and I could have run for HOURS....but alas I am at school preparing for my cherubs! Toodaloo!

I'll have to run outside in the rain anyway even in the rain because the part for my treadmill won't be in for another couple of weeks!!! My philosophy is I may as well run in the rain because it very well COULD run the day of the marathon!

I'm bummed... have only run 3 miles so far this year! I pulled something in my butt three weeks ago, and it still hurts :( I'm trying to give it time to heal, but this is getting so frustrating, cuz I was planning on doing the LA marathon in 2 months, and I was already behind on my training. This is the first time I've been injured on raw. Usually I heal real quick so any "injury" is a non-issue. UGH!!! Please send some positive energy my way!!!

Seriously, I have done that too and went to my chiropractor who informed me I was out of alignment (of course) and unbalanced in my conditioning. Can you cross train at a pool and train on different equipment such as an elliptical/recumbent bike? That's what I did and you won't lose your conditioning...Good luck! ;)

kmik
01-04-2007, 07:29 PM
Thanks for the offer ;) and the advice! My chiropractor's just been doing his usual work on me and said I can run if I want to. I just don't feel it's the wisest thing right now, but cross training would be good, except I don't have access to a pool or other equipment at the moment. Hmmm, too bad I don't live closer to you, I could borrow yours :)

I'm thinking about going to a local health club that has a pool and asking them if they'd like to be a sponsor... exchange a membership for me promoting them in conjunction with the team. How could they pass up a deal like that??? :D

BTW... you've inspired me with your milage goal! Even though my seems paltry compared to yours  I don't think I've ever done this much consistently all year... so my goal is 1000 miles for 2007 :D

Gotta question...

I have been exercising regulary - doing the weight training and cardio is usually some type of interval thing like jog5/10 minutes with a 2 minute brisk walk in between or something with the elliptical maching....

Here is the question... I have a friend who has decided to celebrate the new year by doing a half marathon (I think that's 13 miles)... it's in April and she doesn't work out at all. Now I do work out regularly but I don't know if I am ready for a marathon... She wants me to join along and a part of me wants to embrace the challenge... So here is my question for you and all the other experienced runners... Can I really really be ready by the end of April for this half marathon in Missouri? Exercising every day is one thing but I don't run every day.... She is starting training with an experienced runner this weekend who says that it can be done. I'm just curious. I've also been fasting off and on quite a bit and so my energy is naturally not at its peak. Sorry to bug you guys with this question but I figured you guys would know......

Happy Running!

ABSOLUTELY :D

In September '05 I started walking/jogging. I was still well over 200 lbs and easily winded. I did my first race, also a half marathon :) in March '06. I loosley followed the Galloway method http://www.jeffgalloway.com/ of taking walk breaks at regular intervals during my training and my race. I finished and felt fine at the end.

Also, I wouldn't advise it, but my husband actually did a marathon with NO training at all... and BEAT me!!! Granted he was very sore afterwards. But I guess it all depends on your will first and foremost.

There are plenty of online free training programs to help you get ready! Here's one good resource... http://www.runnersworld.com/subtopic/0,7123,s6-238-244-258-0,00.html

You CAN do it!!! Just train smart and safe and you'll LOVE what you accomplish :D

Kmik, I am sorry for your injury, but let me tell you, I felt good that I have run 4 miles so far, lol, so I have beaten you!! LOL. Sorry if that is cheeky, but compared with rawfigure's and Di's, I have no hope!!

I am running/walking every other day and doing x-training in between with one day rest a week. Today was the day of my body conditioning/weights, but I am ever soo tired. I started doing a DVD but I couldn't continue. It is 4 in the afternnoon and I want to sleeeeep.

So, I will count today as my rest day and do some exercise tomorrow.

100% so far today, a bit of lapse yesterday.

:D Glad to be here for you! Obviously, our biggest competition is ourselves. It sounds like you're off to a great start, so keep up the good work! I found the most important thing in training is to listen to my body. If you're tired, there's a reason, so rest if you can.

Lavendar-
I see you have already been advised on the many training plans available. That's a great place to start. You may not have been running for long but I know from previous threads you HAVE been working out so I think you CAN do it too! I always advise to train for time not distance when starting...See how many minutes you can run (forget about pace) and build on that until you are up to the TIME it will take you to do the distance. Your body recognizes time on your feet not necessarily mileage so train for two hours and you can run for two hours...Also, I only do a long run once a week...your regular runs will be shorter in duration...

Kmik- I wish you lived closer too! Maybe I'll run Chicago next fall! I am pretty sure I'll do Virginia Beach Half Marathon on Labor Day week end ...If anyone is interested I am on a Marathon team...I would say we're always recruiting fresh meat but in this case I'll say we could use some more RAW POWER on our team!

Oh yeah, Memorial Day weekend there is a marathon and half marathon in Ottawa, Ontario that I have done for the past 7 years so that's another possibility if anyone is looking around at other races...I live in northern new york so it's less than 2 hours awy from me :)

My 8 miler this a.m. was poignant in that it was a year ago today I had my accident! I don't mean to sound boastful but I am proud of myself for being able to surpass what the doctors thought possible. I am convinced my raw lifestyle, spirituality (and just a tad of determination) was the reason for my speedy recovery!
Happy Trails!

I'd love to become a runner but do you think even on raw I'll have joint problems when I'm old? I've read walking is better for your body than running.
Do you think a raw diet could allow me to be a runner and do the best for my body?

Sedona Marathon? No, but I go to Phoenix next weekend for the marathon....have you done that one? It's pretty new....Where are you guys in Ohio? Have you ever done any of the marathons there? I'll have to run outside in the rain anyway even in the rain because the part for my treadmill won't be in for another couple of weeks!!! My philosophy is I may as well run in the rain because it very well COULD run the day of the marathon!

The kids and I walked 2 miles again today after school in our unusually mild nny 50 degrees!

My cleanse fast (in support of my sister) will be over soon. This is what I'm am wondering from all the wonderful runners... how much do you take in as far as raw eating goes. My friend started her training on yesterday and ran 10 miles outside. I was thinking of starting inside the gym and then transitioning outside in February. She is going to run 10 miles on Tuesdays/Thursdays/Saturdays... that's all she can get in right now with her schedule. I get home so late in the evening. I know that I am not going to be motivated to run by myself in the dark. My plan was to continue the regular workout and increase my strength training a bit and to just test myself this week about 3 times on the treadmill. I was just going to do a moderate jog and see how long I could last and then work on increasing my percentage every week. I've looked on many runners websites and some of the schedules are intense and I don't know that I could follow them to the letter. What do you guys think? Am I starting out too slow for someone who wants to be able to complete a half marathon in April?

Di, FY, what is a liver cleanse??

LavendarJ, I haven't run any races yet, but you can always repeat the weeks in the schedule until you are ready to move on to the next week. This is what I am doing, anyway. If you have doubts about a half-marathon, is there another, shorter race going on around that time?

My report:

Friday I was very tired, so I rested.

Saturday, we went out 9:30 in the morning and didn't come back until 9:30 in the evening. We went to to social events with masses of food and desserts and I stayed raw for both of them!! Given my sweet tooth, I am very proud of myself I didn't succumb!! But no time whatsoever for exercise. By the time we put the kids to bed, we were flatted, it was after 11:00.

Sunday, today: Got new trainers, but no time for the treadmil at the gym (I don't run outside because I don't know where to run! ) so I put on a aerobics/weights/body conditioning DVD. I have energy for another, off I go!

Here's info. on the liver flush...it was interesting! I plan on doing it again in 2 weeks after the race...I guess I made a few mistakes so I'll do better next time but still "passed" some little green balls!!! sorry so graphic!

http://www.curezone.com/cleanse/liver/kelley.asp

Lavendar- I have always been intimidated by "training plans" myself....When I started running I was actually training to WALK a marathon but got BORED to death with the duration so I started running little bits...I would suggest the same....Go for an hour "walk" and run every other telephone pole....you'll still get 30 minutes of running but 60 minutes of training! When you are comfortable with that do two phone poles before you walk one...If you are not around phone poles do it by time....walk a few jog a couple, (minutes) etc....You'll be running longer before you know it! Just do it...People get "too hung up" on the word running and never start.....You can do it I know you can...Go girl!

Today was my "rest day" but my daughter Alex and I still walked 6.5 miles....and I did the liver flush last night and survived.....interesting experience....I plan on doing it again after the race......I am getting excited....leaving Friday!!! :p

Kmik is an inspiration isn't she!
As far as the back ache I have a few questions...When you say leaning are you holding on to the tm side rails? or just leaning forward? When you are running try to keep your spign aligne and eyes upon "the horizon" or as in childbirth a "focus point"...If it's your lower back you may need to incorporate more stretching and add some cross training so as to be balanced...hope that helps!

It was 19 degrees with a windchill of 8 degrees when I layered up in 10 pounds of outerwear and ran 8 miles this a.m. oddly, it was refreshing!Have a good run everyone!

Plain fruits and salads with sprinkle of seeds/nuts for me. When I stick to that, I have energy for double workouts.

I found on the other hand, that lots of nuts/fats make me lethargic.

I was using fitday for a while and I was suprised to see me thriving with around 1000 kcals a day!

That's my personal observation so far, and I am a newbie myself.

Take the frist step and you will see for yourself what works for you.

Sooo...I have not been running due to the crazy weather system (very windy and now snow and ice). I went running (with my brother) for 2 miles. It was super windy. I could have gone further but I hated the weather and my IPOD died (why me? sniff). I was glad though that the 2 miles warmed me up- I could easily keep going and I have not been working out for over half a year!!

Question to all you crazy runners.........I absoutely LOVE to run outside!! If it's not raining too bad I will jog outside even in the rain. But yesterday I did the treadmill (and ran on the hill setting) and I seem to run WAY slower miles. I am much faster outside. Why is this?

**The first thing I do every morning is drink a QUART of warm water....Then I usually have juice/kombucha + fruit prior to my run, nothing during because I am so well hydrated from prior....no I don't have to urinate a million times during my run because the big drink flushes me out fst and I "go" a lot during that hour or so BEFORE I run...guess my body is just used to that.....I have a fruit meal after my run.....switch to veggies after noon and have my fat at night....???sometimes I want "fat" earlier in the day...just depends....stay raw and listen to your body....I also work out VERY EARLY (up at 3 a.m.) so I DO NOT EAT AT ALL AFTER 6 P.M.....PERIOD...timing is everything when it comes to food "talking back" to you the next day

Well, the temp was 16 degrees this a.m. so I opted for an indoor workout---I'm supposed to be "tapering" for the race anyway right? Run/walked fro 3.5 miles today, according to the schedule, actually, I did one more set of 8 mins running than the schedule said. Yipee! I could do another but I had the most terrible stitch, horrendous stuff...

I really should have planned better for those last couple of miles and not ASSUMED there would be fruit as there always has been in other races....Shame on me but I learned my lesson! I had a really heavy carry-on bag too and I had some painful hip twinges remniscent of the "accident" while walking the ENTIRE Detroit Airport Monday coming home so I guess my old age has finally made me listen to my body this time!!!! {{the old me would have started running again yesterday!!!}} I will get up and walk tomorrow and maybe, just maybe some easy "jogging" but I'll stay inside on the treadmill....and if I don't feel ready I'll use the recumbent! It's weird having extra time in the morning when getting ready for school! I'm used to rushing around!

Yesterday, upper body and abds.

Today, run/walked 4.1 miles!! 460 kcals burned!! One hour on the treadmill!!!

I am very very chuffed, I am making progress! This was the last day of 8 mins running, 2 mins walking, I did 4 sets instead of 3 and I run one set at 4.2 instead of 4mph that I am doing usually.

Now, as I was coming out of the gym, I saw a poster about the Belfast Marathon on May 7. Do you think I have time to prepare for that???? Next week will be my week 6 of training, run 12 mins, walk 1 x3, then week 7 will be run 15 mins, walk 1, run 15,
week 8 will be run 30 mins non stop.

Also, I am running at 4mph usually, should I strive for a faster pace?
My average heart rate is 150, the maximum 155, and I weigh 192 lbs.

Any advice??

Much appreciated,

Esther

I wouldn't feel so bad if my "accident" wasn't so unnecessary...I got "head butted" by a student directly in the sternum knocking me for a loop and taking my breath away....I don't blame him, he was angry, is autistic, and I was the closest target  I will be out of school until next Wednesday (doctors orders)....very sore today but otherwise only a hurt pride :o
Have you recently switched sneakers/the terrain you are running on?
Do you need new shoes
Do you have/need orthotics/heel cups?
Did you change your speed?
Are you eating enough fruits with potassium/magnesium? (bananas, etc...)
Are you overtired?
too much salt?
dehydrated?

As you can see, soreness can be from one or all of these. Tell me the specifics and maybe we can narrow it down a bit more? Good luck!

OK, I am crazy....I walked and ran 10 1/2 miles today but it actually felt good! I had to rely on my "belly breathing" through the diaphragm which actually is how runners are supposed to breath...and I ran well! I actually feel better now. I think the muscles around the bruised area were probably sore and as a result "tight" the walk-run actually loosened things up and I am feeling pretty good right now! I am also taking "zyflamend" a remedy for inflammation from the HFS!...and (shame on me) ibuprofen 2-3 x per day....
So, alls well that ends well!

Back on track again....er, on treadmill  I should say....11.27 for today but who's counting? ;) I'm just glad to be able to run without constant throbbing in my chest....actually, it does not hurt when I run, just when I first start/stop (so don't stop!!!) and when I reach or try to lift anything.....It has done wonders for my running form and breathing!!! Wanna know something really weird that I can't explain though....I have (for 2-3 days, so since my little accident) been craving (and eating) anything fermented.....can't get enough kim chee, saurkraut, kombucha beverage, (soy free) miso, etc???? I always just listen to my body when it comes to stuff like that but can't help but wonder why??? I feel like I am fighting a cold too so maybe that is part of it....well, have a great day-hope it's warm where you are---NOT HERE

walked and ran 11+ miles on the ol' TM this a.m. Day 1 of my fast too....that will be my challenge this week....I will try to run but will at least walk...I NEEEED to heal my body from the inside out....Whether it's detox or not I do not like feeling like I did pre-raw when I have been 100% raw.....kinda discouraging you know? So, I am hoping the fast will heal and refocus my desire for optimal health...I need to find out the name of the marathon runner who routinely fasts and pr's after a week long water fast? I'll look back in Alissa's book because that is where I read it....BTW, is anyone else running besides FY and me???? Post away my cyber friends? Hit the trails!

Also, my weight hasn't dropped at all the last two weeks. I am a bit frustrated if not humbled...

"...as I was coming out of the gym, I saw a poster about the Belfast Marathon on May 7. Do you think I have time to prepare for that???? Next week will be my week 6 of training, run 12 mins, walk 1 x3, then week 7 will be run 15 mins, walk 1, run 15,
week 8 will be run 30 mins non stop.
Esther
(marathoner wannabe!)

I just went back and reread a bit and noticed I never really addressed this...You have plenty of time to get ready for a marathon March 7th, even if you walk-run it you'll be ok...just check out the cut off requirements if there are any....Many races requires you to at least maintain a 4mph pace....??? some don't....Maybe when you run you can "kick it up a notch" and walk to rest....Also, the weight plateau could be a result of building muscle + carbs (such as MOST OF OUR DIET) tend to "hold water" as does muscle "trauma" from overuse....That is often my problem when I train....I tend to overtrain and it causes my weight pre and post work out to fluctuate as much as 10 pounds depending on my previous day's intake! Not to gett too obsessive but try weighing in before and after a work out and you may be surprised! Do you feel that your legs or other body parts feel "tight"? I know that after a long run-the next day- my weight is up a few pounds. Strange considering a long runs burn 2-3 1000 calories!!!! Everything is relative. Have you gotten your BMI checked? As long as that is going down that's really all you need to monitor (says me the woman obsessed with numbers on a scale!!! )

didn't RUN much today (tired/////detoxing????///congested....run down) but did manage to walk 10 miles on the tm.....have extra time today since still off work.....and yes, I AM counting it in my mileage ;) 10 miles is 10 miles right? I was going fast, to some it would be a run!!! I am disappointed in myself for eating (albeit never straying from 100% raw) while I am attempting to fast! I thought that may be why I was so tired this a.m. so I ate pre-run, and it made me feel MORE sluggish....Maybe athletes aren't meant to fast....any other ideas for detoxing? I don't have access to an infared sauna....maybe mono foods for a day? apples? I'm searching here people....My symptoms of "yuckiness" are intestinal in nature...feel inflammed as in my SAD days even though I have been 100% raw with no "cheats" all of 2007.....actually, I have been raw since 8/05 with maybe a dozen "off" days the entire period....so why now? Sometimes I just want to give in, give up, and see an MD for Rx.....sorry for being so negative and I hope I'm not "bringing you down" I just need to be honest and true to myself and also know someone out there will have some good advice to slap me back to reality! But, to play Devil's advocate, shouldn't I feel BETTER, not worse? Why am I depressed? Come on running buddies, time to cheer up the coach! please! :o

Sorry your feeling bad Di, my belief is eat , eat, and do more eating especially when you exercise a lot I never fast when I run a lot. I start feeling run down, get moody, this is what works for me. I'm a business owner, I walk up to 3 miles a day every day with my business then I do lifting everyday all day long. My business is sandblasting and painting its very physical, then I do my running and weights, So I get more exercise every day then most people get in a full week of working, if you think I'm kidding come out and try it. My point is just eat all you can eat every day you will burn it off trust me, and you will have more energy for it. Forever young

Di, would a juice fast be gentler on you than a water fast? (Assuming you want to water fast?) Do you eat enough greens? I am very very new here, so no words of wisdom from me... What if you go to Dr Graham's discussion board and post there? Sometimes he answers people's questions himself. I suppose he is THE guy for athletes like yourself. (sorry, I have no link...)

As for the marathon, I will do the Dublin marathon in October. In the meantime, I singed for my fist 5K in the end of March. And I got an ipod nano for reward for sticking with my training so long, plus it is my motivation to wean myself from the treadmill.

As for my weight, I don't know, I hope it is water retention related to the monthly cycle. I did feel very dissapointed and let my hair down today, back on track tomorrow.

On another note? Di, you just run a marathon, had this accident, perhaps you just need a break? ?? Oh, and have you heard of the water therapy? Drink 1.5 liters of water first thing in the morning, one hour before any solids. It is supposed to work wonders.

Hugs,

Esther.

I always drink a quart of warm water upon rising....always have....nothing else....and I absolutely think everything happening at once...marathon, "freak accident", cold weather all add up to a fasting disaster! I am readjusting my goals to try an "apple detox" for 3+ days and then the liver flush and then be cleansed enough to decide what should be next....Maybe FY is right and fasting is not for the busy mom athlete and teacher that I am....save it for summer when I am not teaching at least---we already know I have a dangerous job!!!!( need I remind you of how my "accident" occured) At any rate, I always feel better posting here to my raw cyber circle of friends! I will also go to Dr. Graham's site...He promotes a lot of bananas doesn't he???? Hmmm, I am like a monkey ya know...

Esther-congrats on "signing up"...maybe you don't see it but you have made such great progress!!! I am proud of you....and the weight plateau is MUSCLE POWER my dear! Thank you coach!

So, there, you knew about water already!! ;)

Ok, I will take your challenge and hide the scales  I just hope for a nice suprise come February.

As for the muscle power, I always had strong legs and week arms, that's why I love running and I try to do upper body weights on my days off, and I absolutely hate swimming.

But I went shopping the other day for training pants and I almost cried. It was very humiliating trying to fit in those skin-tight pants, I didn't buy anything at the end. And I had the children whining and the shop assistants were horrible and it was a disaster altogether. Buggy t-shirts and buggy training pants still for me, although I had a bad chaffing in my arms and btween the thighs the other day, I can now see why flat seams are so important.

See my love? everyone has there own little bits to drag them down...

Found it online eventually, but they charge an arm and a leg for postage and it only a tiny thing.. Shops don't have it. ..

My BIL is coming over from the US in a few days, I will call him to ask him to bring 5-6 of them LOL. That will save you a trip to the post office, I am sure you are busy enough. I do thank you for offering, that was very sweet of you!

Gee! Di, you are very determined girl, you have everything down to a T! Do you reward yourself at all?

For January, I got the ipod and the nike+ sport kit, it is in the mail coming...
For Feb, I want a fancy scale that measures the fat and water. Gadgets keep me going.
For June, it will be a bikini! :D :D

15mins run, 1 min walking (yesterday was 2 mins - hip hip hooray!), 15mins running with a nice sprint at the last minute!

Getting a bit bored at the gym, I contacted the local women's running club yesterday, they meet on Tuesday evening, hope I will make it. Depends if Hubby is home to mind the children.

The scales won't budge, but I can see other very welcoming changes in my body. My legs are getting more defined and I feel stroooong!!

Did 16.25 miles on the TM this a.m.! :D I really had planned on doing less....but you runners know how it goes....You perk up after you get going....I could have kept going and going like the energizer bunny....but thought I shouldn't "push it".....maybe I should train for an ultra  ...They have 50 milers right? I'm going to search that right now ;) For the record, I am not considered a fast runner..about a 8:50-11 minute pace....I start out walking inching up the speed on the tm until I am jogging at 5mph......inching it up until I get to about 7 mph... I don't do tempo/fartleks/ hill repeats. I just RUN! I did those other things for awhile but it can get to be obsessive and you can burn out. People put too much thought into running. My best advice is to "run like a child!" Enjoy the feeling of your body moving, deeply breathing, and enjoying the fresh air (or the tv over the treadmill!).....Smile at drivers! Wave! They may notice you look so happy they start running! Have a great run everyone! Happy trails! :)

Question for coach NFR: Should I continue increasing my time at 4mph or stay at 30 mins and try reach a more "respectful" pace? I feel I am not a proper runners since I am shuffling instead of running, :o

I am going to the running club for the first time today. Will report back later. Still waiting for my Nike+ training kit for my ipod nano.

First immediate goal: run 30' comfortably, outside. Must wean myself from the (ever so comfy) treadmill..

Glad to see you back Kmk

Back from the running club! Was good! I did an 1.6 mile loop with other two beginners. The other girls were walking and running, I was able to run all the way, hills and all. Mind you, they were walking faster than I was running... :o

I feel it was a more challenging workout with the hills and downhills etc. Now I know a little route and I am going to try to do it again during the week and see how long it takes me. :p

Super day today then!! :D

i just got back from a run, a little over a mile. yesterday was the first nice day here in months and i hate the treadmill, so yesterday was my first run in months. i snowshoe and ski, but it's not the same...

the bolder boulder is in may, a 10k. i did it a few years ago, but had pulled a calf muscle a week before the race. though i finished my time was terrible, having to walk the last 2 miles...i wasn't raw then. i also lost both my big toenails, my feet got wet while being sprayed down, was it my shoes, my socks, or the water?

i look forward to this challenge, maybe i'll even shoot for a half marathon...

best of life, meredith

Esther-You rock! I do believe you've been "bitten" by the running bug! Running forever means you have endorphins coursing through your veins!!!! I am so proud of you! I better get that Body Glide huh???? ;)

Kmik-I've been wondering how you are, glad to have you back! How are you...Fortunately, muscle has memory and you'll get back to where you were easier once you can run again (and I speak from experience)... :) Good luck!

Merfie/Meredith- Welcome to our thread....Running in wet shoes will definately cause problems, I'm sure that was your problem...

I was tired this a.m. but dragged myself through 9 miles.....walked at first increased to a slow steady pace...then walked a bit at the end....I am having some health issues right now and know I should ease up on the running but to be honest I NEED it psychologically to maintain my sanity!....Happy trails!

We have had ours for almost a year haven't cleaned it yet. Just put a towel under your feet and butt. Soaks up all the sweat, we don't run ours over 115 degrees and the sweat just pours off, if the towels turn colors from the sweat it's the toxins coming out of your body. Forever young

heh! Thanks Coach!! It wasn't a big snowstorm, mind you, just the little dry snow, but it was minus nonetheless.. :D Plus, it was time for the morning school run so I plodded in front of busloads full of cheeky pupils etc.

I took my Nike+ ipod with me, I haven't calibrated yet, but it said I run for 2.71 miles, in 30 mins, hills and all. You cannot avoid hills in my town. So my pace is 11 something instead of 15 on the treadmill. Hmmm, I am faster outside then! :p

Suffice to say, today I am tired.... not sore, just tired. 30 mins outside is a hard workout, I can feel it in my butt.. ;) So, rest day today, I don't even have the strength to do core or weights like I used to do, yesterday I had a nap in the afternoon.

Confession time: I am not sticking very well to 100% raw, I am cheating big time. Ahem.. Back to green smoothies..

Hi,
I am a long-time runner, but new to eating raw and looking to see the effects on my running. I expect it will take me from a 4 hr marathoner to a 2:30 marathoner. What do you think? ;)
Seriously, I hope that I will have more energy, better endurance, and quicker recovery. That would make me happy. What effects have you all noticed?
I am planning to run the Flying Pig Marathon (Cincinnati) in May. I live in the Chicago suburbs, so winter training stinks, as I'm sure many of you know. But I am getting out there whenever I can, running harder, though fewer miles.
Anyway, just wanted to say hello.

HI Di!!!
Finally found my way in here! You've certainly done a lot of running since PHX! I'm averaging about 5 - 6 miles 3 - 4 times a week! Still spinning, and doing other x-training stuff but I'm not into full time running yet. It's tooooooo cold  . Perhaps not for you folks in the north, but cold enough.
I've increased my fruit and veg. intake quite a lot since I saw you in PHX! I've also found something called Goji berries.... wondering how they maybe has a supplement on a long run. Does anyone know?
I'm new here, not a RAW, but certainly been looking into increasing the fruits and vegs and decreasing the other. My hubby was surprised the other evening when I used meat enough for only 1 when there was 3 of us. Told him would make it up in other areas.... he actually really enjoyed the meal!!!!

Depending on how my day goes here at school I MAY stop at the gym to swim laps after school....It's been sooooo long since I did that and I'd like to get back into it but I'm so out of the habit I'm somewhat intimidated!!!

You should replace your shoes every 400-600 miles depending on whether or not you are a "heavy" runner (like I am- I mean heavy on your feet not nec. heavy weight wise) + if you wear the same shoes daily they'll wear out faster because they need to dry out in between runs. Your best bet is to get 2 new pair mark them, alternate them, and track your mileage. It is worth the extra initial investment because they will last 600 miles a piece rather than 400....I just track the mileage on a calendar by my treadmill and total it up at the end of the month....I know it sounds like extra work (it is) but saving $ is a big thing for me ;)

No sneaker mileage this week for me which is killing me but I may TRY to run a bit on Monday depending how the butt feels!:D

arrgghhh!! it is very frustrating b/c i love to run and i feel am slowly losing my endurance...could it be something simple like i just need to eat more for recovery? i always warm up and cool down and stretch, plus i only start with 15-20 min runs, but i can never continue long enough to increase...

I just joined, and it's great to see an avid runner here!

That is one of my main concerns with this transition to raw foods... am I still going to have the energy to run and exercise as much as I do now? Am I going to find ways to get protein to rebuild my muscles? From what I've researched, I think it's going to make me a BETTER runner!

I completed my first half marathon last summer, and I'm currently training for my second!

Thanks for your inspiration! :)

Sign me up. I am interested in the run for August.
I don't like training in the winter. I completed a marathon, but I wasn't entirely, raw. My half-marathon I was raw. I am down for anything under a marathon. No more marathons for me!

I am a big time cheater when it comes to raw, but when I include more than say 30% cooked foods, the workouts become more difficult. Just the thought that my body gets powered by proper stuff, gives me wings. Plus, I find cooked foods really hard on digestion, when I finish running I am ready to throw up. Ughh...

OOOOHHH, fresh "non-meat" to work with! Welcome aboard! I have completed 12 marathons + 9 half marathons + many smaller races.....3 marathons + 3 half's have been since going raw ...My only problem seems to be based on my own stupidity on race day....ASSUMING:rolleyes: ...See, I HATE to carry anything in a race so I just assume there will be fruit along the way (farbeit from me to check ahead) anyway, I tend to "wilt" between miles 22-25....Moral of the story is I am now training WITH food/drink on me so as to be prepared....and on race day I WILL carry food whether I want to or not-if only for insurance....My personal favorites are as follows:
BEVERAGES:

water (of course)
1/2 H20, half "juice" (carrot, celery, lemon, apple works well and has a good blend of electrolytes)
water
w/agave nectar

FOOD:

grapes (in a baggy) can be frozen/non
orange wedges
grapefruit wedges
dates/raisins
dehydrated
banana chunks/other fruit chunks (pineapple, apple, etc...)

Use your own personal preferences/choices...some people like Lara bars (raw) or homemade energy bars/cookies....Personally, I am trying to avoid nuts for the time being, but that's me!
Good luck finding what works for you!

About the race. I am the race director for a local 10K right here in my area for The Children's Tumor Foundation. It is held the first Saturday in August. If ANYONE wants more Info., I'll gladly give details!!!!

Why do I run and all of this "stuff"? Well, my son Joshua (age 10) has the incurable progressive disorder called neurofibromatosis for which I belong to the CTF Marathon Team. We raise funds for research and treatments as currently there are NONE! I joined the team in 1999. I was overweight following the typical SAD and just wanted to do SOMETHING on behalf of Joshua...Over the years since I have evolved into the runner I am today. I am not an elite, nor do I claim to be. I am quite competitive but only with myself. I have encountered my own health issues over the years (I'll be 40 soon!) and stumbled upon "raw food" a couple of years ago...I have evolved into 100% rawism too so now the running and the raw food go hand in hand for me....I research NF on my own and have some theories about it regarding raw food. I experiment on poor Josh myself but still believe that I need to continue to be a part of "the team" for moral support and the possibility that we are close to a cure. I am sorry I have rambled on it's just that I am so passionate about all of this I could write a book!

At any rate, anyone who wants to know about the race should get ahold of me or go to my (OUTDATED) website or www.ctf.org

Rawism- I see you are in Virginia. There is a half marathon there Labor Day weekend I am planning on running for the team so if you are interested in doing that too let me know!!!!
Whew, I can really go off on a tangent!

p.s. today was a rest day (except for the hour in the sauna) so that I can attempt a long run tomorrow! Wish me luck...The chiro. worked on my quad today which is now TIGHT from all the other issues I've had....That's why I wisely slept in (aren't you proud of me everyone) and will be ship shape to run tomorrow!

Run only 13 out of the 30 minutes and walked home with a limp, I had a cramp in my outer left calf....

Mistake #1. I cut corners on my warmup and stretching, I usually need at least 10 mins of warmup.

Mistake #2. I think 5 times a week is a bit too much for now, must stick to 4 times. Once home I tried to do a fitness DVD and it was a joke, couldn't workout properly.. So glad tomorrow is the official rest day!!

Di, aren't you a courageous soul!! I admire you! Give a kiss to Joshua for me, will you?

Di, I've often wondered about NF and diet....Because nf is genetic I wonder what can be done food wise to help. I know I feel better when I eat ealthy. And my body just loves it when it's fed fresh fruit and veg. My taste buds go over the moon :p I like to think that a healthy diet will help but I'm also reminded that a healthy diet won't change the color of my hair or the shape of my nose. The cancer society has a web page with dietary guide lines, so I am sure that a healthy diet ie RAW has got to be good. Perhaps it could help/hinder tumor growth.. I dunno.....
Keep working on Josh and let me know what happens.
No running today, perhaps I'll get out there after my spin class tomorrow!

10 miles on the treadmill + 1 hour in the sauna = 1 happy athlete:D
Ahhh, life is good! ... and so was the post race cantaloupe I just ate after fasting (successfully for the FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME) yesterday.....been struggling with digestion so yesterday was a fast and rest day and I think it energized me for my run today! I ran strong (aside from residual muscle soreness from my ham/quad).......I started "oxy-powder" last night too so hopefully this cleanse will work once and for all! Maybe I'll get brave and weigh-in at the end of the cleanse....it's been a struggle lately...
Enough about me....get your bums up and work out raw runners!!!

Hi Everybody!

I'm tickled pink to find a raw running thread! Do you have room for one more member?

Here's me in a (raw,soaked) nutshell....

-I've run 20 marathons, all while cooked. I'd run 20 miles then eat 2 bagels with peanut butter and honey. I also never missed the pre-race pasta parties.

-My last marathon was in Phoenix, January 2004. In 2004 I was raw for about 6 months. Unfortunately, I was doing the high fat/high sugar/lots of dehydrated stuff plan.

-Fast forward to 2007...I signed up for the San Diego marathon in June. I want to train with a low fat, raw diet. So here I am!

I'm looking forward to learning all about my fellow raw runners..............Lori

Welcome aboard raw50! It's great to have another marathoner here! Hey, I just ran the Phoenix Marathon myself in January....Was it COLD that day or what? I'm from NNY and I was freezing! I don't have as many marathons under my belt as you but I have run several races while "raw" and I agree MY performance has suffered due to the same mistakes as you....too many "prepared" raw foods and not enough fresh fruit! I too have changed to a lower fat version of raw! It is going a lot better....I am trying to trim down some too some "fine tuning" I like to call it:p I think trying to stay warm this winter I took in a little more fat than I should have and no matter if you are RAW or SAD too much is too much! For about a week now I have been very careful tracking on Fitday.com and everything so my weight is coming back down, but I let it slide too much and now I have a ways to go:rolleyes: but I love challenges!

My next race isn't until May 27th in Ottawa, Ontario.....any takers out there? C'mon rawfigure, we'll take "the guys" along and make it a fun "runner's" weekend!!!;)

Today was a non-running day but I did walk 4 miles on the treadmill, rode (FAST) the recumbent bike for 30 minutes (10 miles?) + used my "Total Gym" which I am going to need to start using more regularly if I want to tone up! Oh, and I used the sauna for an hour....I just love that thing! Whatever did I do without it? Who would think SWEATING could be so relaxing!

Happy trails everyone!

Saturday: official rest day. I was tempted to do some cardio in the evening, but I gave my body a chance to recover instead.

Sunday: Had improptu visitors, so I spend the day cooking and (gasp!) eating! Hubby was back from 2 days away so we chilled in the evening, talking...

Monday: feeling very lethargic after the big meal yesterday, uh, detox is in order... No exersice yet, I have a house like a pigsty, the baby emptied my pantry on the kitchen floor. Must wait until she has her nap to stick on a fitness DVD since I didn't run this morning....

Tonight my 13 year old son wanted to "start training" for lacrosse so we "worked out together....I am definately not "fresh" at night but did manage 10 minutes on the stepper, a "Total Gym" workout (quads, calves, arms and abs) and a 40 minute sauna to top it off! Hi Di, you are going to be sooo proud of me!!:D

Today I run a 5K (training not race) and I did it in 32 mins, my pace was 10.18!!! wooooohooooooo!:D :D

Gone is the 12 something pace! I think the 2 sessions of intense training (x-press workout) at the gym has helped a lot. I do a 3 min sprint and then a 2 min sprint and then a 1 min sprint at the treadmill and that has helped tremendously! Speedwork does work!

This morning I felt like a proper runner. I was going strong and steady, very comfortable, very ejoyable run and my fastest so far. I am soooo chuffed!

Can't wait to go to the gym tomorrow and have another run on Sunday. Yippppeee!:D

Welcome RAw50!! Good to see new people here!!

FY and Di, thank you for your nice words of encouragement!! :)

Today : Interval training at the gym. I added another kg to the chest press, now 4kgs, same with the seating row. As for the cardio intervals, I did elliptical, rower and treadmill. In the treadmill I run for 2' at 6mph, (beginning of theweek was 5.5mph) and my 1' at 7mph (beginning of the week was 6mph).

I was 100% yesterday -yoo hoo, low fat, high fruit, but today is DDs 5th birthday and I had a (big) slice of her birthday cake. duh!

Feeling strong!

Enjoy the weekend,
