My boy friend was so sweet and he bought me 2 100% RAW bars that were 3.99 each. I was so excited to have them because lately I'm running low on ideas for meals. It was so gross. Let me tell you. It was like eating figs coated in caster oil. ( Not that I've tasted caster oil )
I was so disappointed. I really wish I liked raw food bars.
Anyone here actually like them? :p

Don't feel badly...they're not for everyone and not everyone loves or likes them. I used to LOVE Larabars, but now, I walk right past them without a second look because I've kinda "outgrown" them and I know I can make something at home myself that tastes just as good if not better.
Also, not all pre-packaged raw treats are created equally. I've tasted some that were really good, some that were so-so and some that made me spit it out.

trinity, im curious - what bars were these? i tried a 100% raw bar recetly - called VEGN - the chocolate flavour, and it was horrible. It took me about 3 weeks to get thru one bar. i left it in my purse and ate a few bites when i reeeaaally needed to, lol.
but yeah ive tried diff ones and havent come across a decent one yet.

Thank's for the encouraging words Rawkinlocs.

lol..i just read your most recent entry on your blog. i literally started laughing at the "tasted like fig butt to me" part haha
dont worry..not liking the bars may seem like a sucky situation, but id be viewing it as a GOOD thing. those darn things can be quite addictive, and usually theyre not even 100% anyway. so not liking them may work out in the long run better for helping you stay on track :)
besides..you can always make your own. or make your own trail-mix type baggies if its the convenience youre lookin for

I like the Go Raw pumpkin seed bars and so does my daughter. They taste really good and are not overly sweet. However when the store was out of those we bought another bar of the same brand and oh, yuck! It had apricots in it and neither of us like apricots. Actually I don't like dates for that matter and the pumpkin seed bars do have dates in them but the flavor of them seems to blend in better than apricots.
I've bought Lara bars for my daughter and while she will eat them in a pinch if she's really hungry she doesn't much care for them.

Lara bars hold a special place in my heart ... a couple of months ago, my Whole Foods had a display set up with free tastes of Lara bars. I loved them, bought some, searched them out on the net, and stumbled onto the whole idea of raw food. So I owe finding out about raw to them.
But since I've started eating raw, I can't stand them. :( Too rich, too date-y. I've come to find out that I just really do not like dried fruit.

I used to like Lara Bars, but now they are something I can take or leave. What a gyp, too. When I loved them last year the price was $2.69 per bar and now that raw eating is "big" at the health food store, they dropped the price to $1.99 and even grocery stores are selling them too.
But now that I eat a diet of mostly fresh, ripe fruit (almost exclusively), the bars taste dry and pasty to me.
I mean, why eat a bar called "banana cookie" when a bunch of gorgeous real ripe organic bananas are sitting right next to it?

Let me tell you, yesterday morning I picked up one of the new Lara bars made with cacao and had it right in the middle of my fruit smoothie. I felt horribly itchy afterward. I do believe that the high amount of fat in there mixed with the fruit smoothie really messed me up. Fruit and fat is not recommended to be eaten together as you can see in the chart in Alissa's book.
I personally don't see them as health promoting by any means, if anything they are okay tucked in a purse or glove compartment for emergencies during transition. I never really loved these raw bars anyway - too heavy and dense.

I LOVE raw food bars! I've never found one I didn't like. I've tried Lara, Omega-3 Flax (they have 100% and some that are only 90%. Of course, I always buy the 100%) and ThinkOrganic. I can't remember if I've tried any others or not. But I like those three. They're very convenient since I'm on the run a lot. But I do also carry bananas and raw nuts with me, too when I"m on the run. That's what I like about them.
I know this sounds odd but I figured out a way to test them to see if they were raw or not. I put them in the freezer overnight and when I take them out, if they thaw within a two-four minute period, then they're raw. (try putting chocolate in the freezer, taking it out and seeing how long it takes to thaw - definitely not that short amount of time) And these three have always thawed within that amount of time. The Omega 3 never really freezes too much, either.

Well friends I decided that I was not going to waste my raw bars and to do something creative with them in a way that I could still eat it, so I made raw chocolate/almond vegan raw bar cups lol. Whew. Long name.
I have a plastic mold that looks like mini peanut butter cups and here is my recipe!
1st in a food processor I put
3.5/4th's raw bar broken in pieces
1 tbs raw honey
1 tbs coconut oil (melted in a bowl over hot water)
Blend.. set aside and clean machine
Then
2nd in food processor
1/3rd cup sliced almonds
1/3rd cup macadamin nuts
2 tbs coconut oil
1 tbs raw honey
Blend.. set aside and clean machine
Then
3rd in food processor
1 cup cocoa
2 tbs raw honey
3 tbs coconut oil until thin.
leave the chocolate out until it hardens in a cup then heat it over hot water until it's melted. It will be twice as thick as before, which you want.
In a mold..
layer the vegan mix below, almond mix in the center and chocolate sauce over top. Freeze for 2 hours and then eat! Yummy!
Raw chocolate tends to melt fast, but mixed with the two other ingredients it holds nice and the vegan bar is like a cookie! It's pretty good.
