I banana searched the topic of body building and athletics and got some info. but not enough. Sometimes people only got 3 answers and those answers didn't always answer the questions the personal asked.
So, please be patient with me if I ask something that may have been asked before. I am hoping that there has been more ideas, opinions and personal experience since some of the posts from 2005.
I've noticed that I have yet to see any female promoting a raw vegan athletic lifestyle. I've read great blogs from raw women that may include some light exercise. But what about the hard core women folk out there?
I am going to try and do 100% raw in Jan. I am also training for some mountaineering courses that start in the next few months. So my personal training regime is going to be upped from what it is today. My concern is that I won't be getting the right nutrients that my body needs to maintain and repair. I believe in a varied raw diet but also am open to raw supplementation. I truely also believe that women have different needs then men. Thoughts, links etc.???????

Yes she is the one person whom I love to read her comments. But I am confused to if she used to do SAD body building and is now a retired competitor? Or???? I think I might have to private message her. Thanks!

I'm high raw and not 100% to date. But haven't had an problems. I am a vegan whole foodie and have steadily built muscle on vegan food. I've competed in mainly fitness and bikini, photo things. But begin live Natural Fitness comps in April. Google look up Tonya Kay, 100% raw foodie, dancer, poi spinner, and currently touring with Panic at the Disco. Also Brendan Brazier, tri-athlete, high raw vegan & Robbie Hazley, high raw vegan Bodybuilder (just finished competing Mr Universe).

Hey there. To answer a question...YES I retired from Figure Competitions about the time I went Raw (14 months ago). I did not retire from Competition due to diet change but do to fact that after 6 years of training and diet I felt I was done with it. SO very TIME CONSUMING and caused lack of balance in my life. Also I did not want to go to the next (Pro) level as I felt to stay competitive I would need to use AS and I refused to go there.
Also when Competing no one follows the "SAD" diet. Bodybuilding diets are not Standard by any means. They are Protein dominant diets. Loads of Salad too. Plain and Simple, Clean diet. I could compete now on my Raw diet if I wanted to. I am not trying to but I still maintain a fair amount of muscle not really doing much weight right now, and a bodyfat about 15% so it would not be hard to get ready for a show being Raw.
Hope that helps ! :D :D
I ran a marathon in October and an ultra marathon in November... not sure if that's "hard core" enough :) I'm going to be focused on running throughout 2007 but then in 2008 I'm going to switch gears to strength training. I don't anticipate changing my diet. I find I feel best and recover quickest on high greens and high fruit. But mostly I follow whatever my body says. If I get a hankering for guacamole, I eat it, carrot-pecan burgers, nut cream/fruit parfait, whatever. I just don't eat a lot of heavy stuff on heavy training days.

Do you mean "famous" athletes? I am by no means "famous" but I am 100% raw, run anywhere from 50-70+ miles per week, am married to a great guyfor 18 1/2 years, raising 5 kids, teaching full time and soon to be 40!!!! I will be running my 12th marathon on 1/14/07 and have completed 9 half marathons plus many smaller races placing well in local races in the past.....Don't know how well that measures up but I am feeling great!!!!
I am starting a running thread for 2007, maybe you can join it!

Thanks! I spent a lot of time on Tonya Kay's site. She's a crazy, adventerous girl! :) I like her spirit! I did want to comment on Brenden Brazier. We have his book and stuff. The only thing about him is that his recipes include tofu/soy and coooked beans. I know I could easily be where he is when including those items.

Yeah, I subsribe to Oxygen magazine. (nope not at all toned or anything, lol). They talk a lot about diet and it is protein filled. And lots of yucky shakes. Bleah. I don't think I could ever do that. I want to have muscle and be toned but probably not to the degree of the competitions. I think more of a bit less than pre-compeition.
So, do you still weight train? I think I mentioned a few posts up that I love reading all your forum comments! :)

LOL. Of course you are in the hardcore group. Please, not everyone could run marathons!!!! A lot of people aspire but it takes a hardcore person to put in the time it takes to run for such a stretch (don't get me started about training on "evil hills"!). For some reason I have the ability to run fine raw- I can run long stretches but when I do weight training, I get concerned. I am not saying that you can't be active and be raw. But I want to make sure that I am eating the right amounts of certain ingredients for muscle repair or I am getting enough calories and grain products. You can stay raw without getting a good, quality, varied diet. Just with anything.
I'm excited to hear you adding a strength program in addition to all your running. It's inspiring!!

You are right about the Protein diets. I lived on 55% Protein 30% Carbs and 15% fat for years. There were diets I followed where on some days I was 80% Protein, talk about being tired and constipated those diets will do it to you. I drank Protein Drinks for 15 years and then one day said NO MORE ! I could not get near on now !
I tell women not to even worry that they will get to muscular from weights and not to be concerned that they will look like the Gals in Oxygen (unless you are willing to commit to an insane weight schedule and diet) Most of the Girls (maybe not the real Models who do not compete) you see in Oxygen are doing non drug tested shows and most have done some type of Steriod use. Sorry all to tell, but it is true !! If I posted that on a Bodybuilding Forum I would be blackballed ! I no longer buy the Fitness/Bodybuilding Magazines because it torks me to read the Interviews and Articles on the diets and exercise they use to acheive the "look" when in reality they are not doing what they *say* they are. Also many girls diet on air to get ready for a show (like I did), take diuretics (some take the dangerous perscriptions) to get that ripped look, then of course the novice reading these Mags then wonder why they cannot get that look or think that if they follow the article they could look that way.
I have been lifing weights since 1986, so 20 years ! I was a stick of 105 pds when I started ! It took me YEARS to get some muscle on. I worked out 5 days a week faithfully, rarely taking time off from it. I then progressed to heavier weights, and after a few injuries in the last few years, shoulder, low back, knees, I then reduced my weights down, dropped Pullups and Heavy Squats from the regime and my Injuries healed. I now lift a few days a week, rarely heavy, and can maintain what I have. I think the change in diet (to Raw) has been a God send and I find that I can work half as hard and look about the same !! :p

Hello!
So, were you very thin your whole life and then when you started to lift weights you progressed to a heavier weight and built a lot of muscle? How many lb weights do you lift?
Thank you!

Yes I was always thin. Now I am thin but with muscle ! I progressed to heavy weights during my competition years but now do fairly low weights.
Some examples of what I might do now is
Leg Extentions 50-75 pds
Leg Curls 35 pds
Dumbell Shoulder Presses 10-20 pds
Side Lateral Raise 8-12 pds
Lat Pulldowns 75 pds
Dumbell Arm Curls 20 pd range
Tricep's 20-30 pd range
Seated Calf Raises 50-75 pds
Hyperextions hold a 15-20 pd weight
Leg Press 75-125 pds
Lunges I will do Bodyweight - 15 pds DB
Squats I only do the weight of a bar or just bodyweight
Abs Cable may do 30-60 pds mostly abs I use the Ball or Medicine Ball 8 pds.
I DO MORE CARDIO than Weights. !

I'll speak up for the rest of us! I was NEVER thin until a few years ago when I extreme dieted (in hindsight the WRONG way) and went from a size 14 to a 4 losing 50+ pounds. I now maintain my weight around 140 and have transformed my body into that of a runner's body...although I have VERY MUSCULAR legs....bigger from the running I guess so I often have to buy a size 6 pants if they run tight in the legs (LOL) I call them my "man legs" I have always been fascinated by body building women, I admire RF as I know she used to compete and was (IS!) superbly toned and built! I am content to be a runner now but would really benefit from toning up the rest of my body! Hmmmm, NY Resolution????
I like the name of this thread. Maybe others can share their raw female power stories! They would be inspiring to hear about for the New Year! Please share!

Thank you for showing me what you do to work out!

here is a pic I missed. This is a Show I did 2 1/2 years ago and took First but I thought I should of been leaner. I did not diet as hard for this show and it showed. I was "softer" than other show pictures. I look more like this now with about 5 more pounds...other shows I would lose 10 ish pds for the stage ! You will have to copy and paste .....
http://www.sportsandleisuremag.com/resources/NSSN/2004_Pictures/Trosi%20Leslie76BV1154.JPG
Whe you lift weights, Yes , you will gain weight. For example I have an identical twin. We both Run and I lifted weights for 18 years she dabbled in it off and on. I always weigh 5-7 pds more than her but we are the same size.
So you will gain a pound or two or three ! when you first start weight training. Many girls say they gain more but sometimes I think as they weight train, eat more, they gain some muscle and some fat. As time goes on I gained a few pds a year then leveled off after 10 years of it, now when I lift I do not gain at all.
For the Question on Steriods. There are two types of Shows...Drug Tested and Non Drug tested. I always did Tested shows where I took a Polygraph and then when you win you pee in a cup for a Drug test. The show you see covered in Oxygen and the Bodybuilding Mags are NOT. Pick up a Natural Mag..and you will see the Difference.

:D ALOHA from Hawaii....I am new to this forum
my name is "Kieba" and I have a raw retreat/bootcamp for Body-Spirit with fitness gym, climbing walls, etc...
I have been a hardcore bodybuilder for nearly 20 yrs, competed and won Ms.Natural CA and got 2nd in Nation back in 93 47 now and still at it and helping others! Yes, I agree, supplementation is impt. for women and different nutrition/eating requirements as I have experimented much with being vegetarian for 27 yrs, vegan for a few and raw/vegan for a bit....I am mostly raw vegan now but I have found what works best for me to maintain muscle and energy.
feel free to check out my place and pics of me...and email me direct if you like

Ohmigosh, I am not at all as spectacular as others on this forum, I can assure you. I really am just an average person who has a drive to achieve goals I set for myself. I am in no way athletic!!!! :)
Actually I was overweight growing up. By about 22, I lost most of the weight and started getting back into shape. I got into mountaineering a bit and then last year I started running. I could bore you by talking on and on but I will just tell you a few of the things I have done so you know where I am coming from when I post. It may not seem like a lot but there were months of hard training for each one of these.
I've climbed Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, and Mt. St. Helens (the first 2 I almost reached the top but ya know, bad weather- they are on my list for 2007), I did the Seafair Half Marathon and the Seattle Harris Direct Half Marathon.

Hey, you got me beat. I have NEVER climbed a mountain! Sounds fascinating! Do you need a lot of special equipment, etc...? See, you ARE amazing! What do you do for a living? I feel like a mountain climber but actually am a special education teacher for 6 very "active" 5-7 year old special needs boys!!! Running keeps me sane! Happy New Year!

Ohmigosh, I am not at all as spectacular as others on this forum, I can assure you. I really am just an average person who has a drive to achieve goals I set for myself. I am in no way athletic!!!! :)

Most of the Girls (maybe not the real Models who do not compete) you see in Oxygen are doing non drug tested shows and most have done some type of Steriod use.
Wow, this is so true... and so disappointing. I still read some bodybuilding forums from time to time, and a few months ago I saw a post by a trainer telling the story of his client's quest to a fitness competition. She quite literally nearly dieted and trained herself to death. Just a few weeks ago, I saw her photo and story posted on another bodybuilding web site as the "transformation of the week," and her progress was displayed in a very positive light. If only people knew... :(

Yep. Need loads of equipment and expensive clothing. It's definately not a cheap sport. I have invested thousands of dollars.
I read somewhere else that you are a special ed. teacher. That's soo cool. I had thought about adding a special education endorsment to my degree- although I have a degree in early childhood education. Currently I am a nanny.

About your photo which you find yourself "soft":
I love that photo. i think that is is very toned but still very femine. Maybe not to body building standards but I thought it was beautiful. Plus I agree with another reader that you have your boobs!!!! lol. One of the main concerns I have about body building. It's nice to work those muscle groups and maybe lose some if need be but I wouldn't want to lose all my uhh...womanly aspects like those I see in hardcore body building magazines. But that is just me.
I thought both pictures were goregeous and you looked very sleek and womanly in both!!! :)

(off-topic) Yes, I have been a special ed. teacher for 18 years {{Why do you think i run!!!}} It is exhausting but I love it. Half of my students are autistic! I have 6 students and 4 aides---so in other words they are pretty needy 5-7 year olds! I just wish I could talk some of the families into trying to make dietary changes but I walk a fine line in what I can and cannot say ya know? You should pursue the field...it's evergrowing (unfortunately) and we can use more dedicated teachers! You're a NANNY???? COME LIVE WITH US! Actually our kids are 10,10,13,16,20 but sometimes I WISH I had a live in because life gets so crazy! That is partly why I run so early. I do not take away any family time. Just the long runs on the weekends do to an extent but even after a 4 hour run Saturday I was back by 9:45!!!! I have to get to bed EARLY tonight to get back on track with the 3 a.m. wake up calls!!! So now it's off to doing lesson plans and then clean up make the bed and hit the hay!!!

Well you noticed the boobies :p ...hmm...what can I say ? I am natural in the Muscle Dept...no steroids so you CAN look that way with good old weight training and cardio, but as far as the boobies I fess up and I did have a Breast Augmentation (saline) in 1994  . SO that is why I have them, even though I am lean. When I started weight training in '85 I was a B cup but 1994 gone to an A which was OK but then my Identical twin had it done and I decided to follow her lead. Unfortunately if you lose bodyfat you lose it in the Chest too, but a toned body is worth it. Even if I had the implants removed I would opt for tone over boobies.

LOL. Thanks for fessing up. You are so honest! I love it!!! :D
I may be on of the few, but I am excited you lose some in uhh..that department. I've always wondering but I didn't want to start a thread about that topic. (*blushes*). One of my concerns with weight training is that when I build those muscles around that area, instead of losing some weight in those, I was worried it would make them pop out. ;)
I guess with women with smaller bust sizes this may be worrisome but with me, I am now looking forward to weight training!! Bring it on!!! :p
There is a difference too between the stages of competition and bust sizes. Like, on the cover of Oxygen, I love the look. Sleek, tones, boobage. lol. But then I look in the back at the photos of competition and I find it too muscular and lack of boobs. Hmmmm.....now I am going to go back and look at the link of the other competiters- check out their assets. Gosh, I am so horrible. (*blush*).

Oh sorry I missed answering the questions. As far as have I changed the work outs....The answer is yes and no ! I have changed as the years have gone by, always changing things up.
It is work to get in shape. For me it was not hard as I started when I was young , always active in HS, Cherrleading too. I had a good foundation, was skinny with a tiny waist and little muscle so I did not have to go through the lose weight stage when I started. That does make it easier. If you are starting from a place where you need to lose bodyweight (fat ) then it can be more frustrating because you see may not see the muscle right away !!
When I first started weights I was 25. I started with the "Traditional" type work outs. Straight sets of Bench Presses, Squats, etc etc of progressively heavier weights. I would do Set 1 12 reps then set 2 more weight 10 reps set 3 more weight 8 reps. I did this for years building that way. Then I progressed to heavier weights doing 4-6 reps and needing a spotter. Then when I started competing I began to do more shaping exercises, more lunges, kickbacks, small muscle exercise like extentions and curls for the legs more than heavy squats. Then as the years went by I added in Plyometric and Circuits. I do more of the Full body Circuits right now because I do not want to add more, I want to stay where I am.
So for Circuits I will do 3-4 upper body exercise and 5-6 lower body, adding cardio at the end. I will do this Jan.
Then in Feb I plan to do the traditional work outs:
SO I will do a routine of
DAY 1 Back and Bicep ( 2-3 exercises for each, 3 sets heavier weights)
Day 2 Legs and Butt ( 5-6 exercises with sets of 3 lower weightshigher reps )
Day 3 Chest, shoulders and triceps
Day 4 Abs and more butt

Thank you for all of this info and expereince! I am truley greatful!
I hope you don't mind me asking questions! You just seem so wise especially in the area!
I went to a medical message today, cause I am still healing an injury. Well, she said that the "cause" seems to be lifting weights. She said she lifted weights for 20 years and then she just gave it up last September! Anyway, the reason for this (which is also my way of training that caused this too) is that I have strengthened some of my muscles and left others untoned and unworked, or at least not nearly as worked as others. For an example; my otter thighs are rock hard and my inner thighs are untoned. How do you balance all of your body? She said that it was a blessing because my body is making me come back to balance. So, my question was; how do you keep all of your body balanced and toned, without training some areas and not training others? Have you had any personal experience with this?
Since you are a long time weight lifter, are weights good for your body? Everybody I meet is a yoga fan... Do lifting weights help your metabolism or mess with it? Hmm. How is your body after all of this lifting?
Thank you again!

Well I am soon to be 46..5'6 1/2 " 123 pds , low blood pressure 104/68 or so.., and low heart rate 58 bpm in most cases, good blood profile, no need for a Chiro, no real bothersome aches and pains that interrupt my day so I would say my Body is doing good !
You do need to work out so you are balanced. You cannot do Quads w/o doing the Hamstrings, and Low Back needs to be done to balance out the Abs...and so on ! It is important to do a variety of exercises and not concentrate on the same body parts at each work out.
Remember everyone is different. Some like Yoga (I do not as I get bored) some like Kickboxing and some like to just Run...I like to do alot of different things...Step Cardio, Run, Hike , Bike, Rebound, Swim, Dance and Weight Train.
Every Pd of muscle burns about 50 (plus or minus a little) per day. So it is Positive to the Metabolism. One of the big advantages of weight training for a women is Bone Health.

I am trying to do more yoga and strenching! Because I keep being told I am stiff, stiff, stiff, stiff. So I want to balance out.
I have a few more questions! I hope you don't mind...Hmm (I am laughing to myslef!) Do you know of any workouts or "moves" for your inner thighs? I am out of balance in that area.
Also, what do you think of running under 21 years old? Because I am, and I have heard that you are not supposed to run until you are 21-22 years old! Does weight training work that way too? Or can you start anytime, or in my case keep lifting? I personally have heard both with weights, some say don't or wait until you are done growing like 21-22 years old, and some say do.
Thank you!

You can balance (and should) your hip abductors/hip aductors with a PT band or swimming if you have access to a pool. I have the same issues because I inadvertently "guard" the hip I broke last year....I also find stretching and massaging the tight muscles helps. Lying flat on your back with ankle weights opening and closing your legs can help too. I know RawFigure can give you more weight training advice but thought I may have a few tips too. Also, I have 5 kids. Two of them have already run a half marathon when they were 19 and 15....They trained and recovered FINE....I have also known of 12 year olds running marathons....so, I would say go for it, but then again I'm a psycho runner!

A PT band looks like a long rubber strap (different colors) that provides resistance for your legs....You can also buy bands for that purpose. The ankle weights help the outside going out and the inside pulling together...Also, (if I can describe this without pictures  ) specifically for the inner thighs:
1. Lie on left side straight, bend right leg and cross over left, lift the left leg up & down while wearing the ankle weights....switch sides.
2. Lie on back with weights on, raise one leg with toes pointed out, lower...switch legs
I may know more I'm sure from my recovery after my hip injury....just gotta think of them (gettin' old!) ;)

Christianna ..I LOVE you name :) beautiful.
There are alot of exercises for the inner thigh. Some good ones for the inner are : Squats (you can do weightless ones), Ballet Squats, Lunges to the Front, Reverse Lunges and Side Lunges. Cable Adduction or simply with an Ankle weight and do a standing side leg lift. Another is to lay on side on floor, cross the top leg over the lower and lift the lower leg up (gym class exercise ! ) Roller, Inline & Ice Skating is great too. And believe it or not, lots of Jumping Jacks :) !
Here is a great resource for you :
One the left click on the various exercise to see how to do them. One the right column you will see examples of stretches.

Okay so I was reading back posts on the exercise thread and looked up Body for Life. FYI- the posts were about adapting a raw lifestyle in conjunction with body for life. I was trying to find a picture of what I would love to achieve body wise (granted my genetics are able to). Rawfigure posted some very good info. on this thread about female body builders and drug use and protein addictions etc. I dont' want to achieve such a high standard of bodybuilding yet I want to be toned. I found a picture of the type of tone I am trying to convey and was wondering if this much muscle tone is achieveable with raw and exercise???

Great Thread!! 'Just the info I was looking for. I do some weights at home, but spend more time swimming, biking, yoga. We do 60-75 mile bike rides during the season, some are multi-day. So I've been wondering about how to do those multi-day rides especially. I've ordered a dehydrator and am going to start making things that will keep well over a week's time --crackers, cookies, etc. And the other thing I keep seeing on the forum is to eat LOTS of greens and fruit. I'm feeling a little more secure now that I can continue my usual biking (especially) regimen. We build up mileage somewhat gradually through the season, so I can adjust as we go along.
Thanks, all, for a great conversation! :D

Is that Jessica Alba??? Yes, I love her figure. She is on the shorter side (like me!) but I have a bigger frame and more of an hour glass figure. So, I had to give up her being one of my ideals (sniff). :p
To answer your question before, I took this past year off from...well...everything. I haven't been eating well or exercising pretty much all of 2006. So, now it is a bit harder to get back with it. But I am a goal-oriented person and have set some up. Hopefully I will get back where I was before.

I do 1 1/2 hours of Bikram Yoga daily and also an hour of either aerobics or weights on alternating days. The 80-10-10 raw food lifestyle gives me all the energy I need, although I did need a transition period from the SAD life style I was living. When I first transitioned to raw food I ate alot of nuts & other fats & had significantly less energy.
My biggest handicaps are emotional eating of non raw foods ;) - but I don't fall off the path often.
