Hey RFTalk'ers!
I've got to say to all newbies and all who don't own a copy of Living on Live Food...you reeeeally should get this book, especially if you are just starting out!
Now, I realize that some people think that I and others here who highly recommend this book only do so because we're some kind of mindless groupies who follow Alissa like the Manson Family followed Charlie and that we're programmed to say these things  (I know of what I speak because I've seen these types of things said on other forums) But it's not even like that at all. We give this book such a high recommendation because it deserves it. In many of our kitchens, it is the most used and abused book...and by abused I mean, pages folded, corners fraying, food stains on the pages...at least that's how MINE looks!
If that's not enough to convince you, how about how GIGANTIC this sucker is! I remember a while back someone was even kinda complaining that it was too heavy and trying to convince Alissa to make more scaled down, mini-versions of it! LOL! I mean, the dimensions of it are 8.5x10.5, give or take and the it's like a little over an inch thick. It's full-color with high-quality,thick glossy pages, it's like 544 pages long, not including the index and resources pages in the back and the table of contents alone is 3 pages long
Speaking of the TOC, here is the full Table of Contents to show just how much ground this book covers and simply listing the titles really does it no justice but it gives you an idea:

So as you can see, she covers just about everything there is to cover! If you want simple, easy recipes...they're there. If you want more gourmet recipes...they're there. If you want to know about food combining, it's there. If you want to simplify your diet, she covers that! Alissa isn't about eating gourmet raw and preparing meals for the rest of your life - she tells you that there WILL come a time when you will want or even need to keep it simple. But there is still that freedom to have a prepared meal when and if you choose to. But even those who are not into a lot of recipe-making can STILL benefit greatly from this book. Don't have a dehydrator? Don't need it...many of the nut pate's can be eaten "wet" on crackers (guess you'd have to buy them pre-made) or stuffed in lettuce or other greens or just eaten alone...cookie recipes, I'm sure many of you used to eat raw (SAD) cookie dough...this time you don't have to even give Salmonella a second thought 'cause there are no eggs! So, just eat the dough or make them into refrigerator cookies! The only things that may NEED dehydrating are the crackers, crusts and breads. Other than that, though, you can make most of these without a dehydrator...won't get the same texture...but doesn't mean it can't still be tasty in and of itself!
I promise you I am NOT getting paid to say these things or to have taken the time to type up that long TOC...I did it because I truly think that Alissa's is the best raw food book. It just covers so much. People look at the recipes and make an assumption about her promoting "high fat"...but people really need to READ the book...read the first section with all the info before the recipe section even comes into play.
Well, before I go too far off on a tangent, I just wanted to write this so people can see just how much of a gem LOLF is and why so many people love and recommend this book.
I didn't even get into the DVD...but let's just say, it's like having Alissa right there in your living room showing you how to make a slew of her recipes from her book while talking with 2 ladies about the raw diet, answering their questions and having fun making food that these ladies LOVE when they taste it! I watch this DVD when I feel myself slumping back into cooked food desires and it motivates me everytime!
Okay, I've said my peace. I hope this helps shed some light on why we are always saying, "Get Alissa's book!" and makes everyone here who doesn't own it, get a copy or put it on their wish list...you won't be sorry!
Peace!

Next time she should make the pages plastic... mine all stick together! roflol!
I LOVE Alissa's book. I honestly have gotten rid of all the others.
I just keep Alissa's book and a notebook where I write recipes I find on here.

It would be nice if Alissa made her book with a hard cover or on CD-ROM:D.
The pages of my book are still new looking (bought it in mid-August of this year). By the end of next year, it'll have that nice worn out look like the rest of my books do.
I definitely plan on getting the DVD next year. I wish I had've bought it along with the book.

I agree. I have been on this site (or at least lurking) for at least 1/2 year. I decided to get the book 2 weeks ago based on some of the threads on recipes from the book as well as the beautiful pictures posted in the photo recipe thread.
I've gotta say that this is the first book that has very easy and simple recipes! A great book for people who want something quick, good, and easy. I don't have time to mess with complicated recipes so I highly recommend her book for the recipe section alone!

I don't have the DVD simply because I'm not one to want to sit and watch something. I do have the book and also 4 other books about raw and living foods. Those 4 get little to no use. I tried some recipes from one of them and yuck! Alissa's rarely leaves the kitchen because I am always referring to it.
Yes I concur. Ask for it as a Christmas gift (or the money to buy it yourself)!

Mine arrived 2 days ago. I already have scads of pages folded down, marking the recipes I want to try. Funnily enough, I mostly dog-eared the simple, every day types of recipes. I can't wait to try them all!

I completely agree!
The DVD watching Alissa in action is also very inspirational for a visual, hands-on demonstration of how many recipes are prepared (she does fresh recipes as well as dehydrator recipes).

yes!! I've only had my book maybe three to four weeks but I love it and was lugging it to work with me on occasion to browse and read on my lunch break!
I also brought it with me on the plane from new york to texas yesterday to show it to my dad and make some recipes for him....
the book is brand new but I've already got pages folded over and just a little wear and tear cause i look at it, read it, and use it so much!
thank you alissa.
oh.. and the dvd is great too. I love watching her make things and the women in the show are funny and make it exciting to watch because they really get into it and ask all kinds of questions. I'm glad I got both the dvd and book together.

I love my book!~~...I'm come'n up on 4 months raw (almost said clean)...and it was my first book recommended by Rawtruth...and since then I've added another 5 books on raw...and Alissa's book is my favorite...the one I refer to for the 'bottom line'...I get a lot of good feed back from the others as I do from this forum....Alissa's book, style of carrying the message works for me...
I've bought it for my daughter's boyfriend for Christmas ...after he ate some stuffed mushrooms from her book...he showed an interest in raw....
Thank you. Elaine
Just gotta throw in my "HEAR HEAR" or is it "HERE HERE"... or maybe "HEAR HERE" but I'm pretty sure it's not "HARE HARE" :) Nonetheless... I've never used any kind of recipe book on a regular basis before in my life. Alissa's book is SO easy to follow and understand, and all the recipes are SO delicious! I've got a couple others that I may just cross reference when I'm trying to develop something on my own, but nothing compares to "Living on Live Food" by Alissa Cohen :D

This is also my favorite starter book for anyone new to raw.
It's not just for new people, though, I use it more than any other raw book I have. (I have tons)
Mine is so stained and it even looks like it is water logged. The pages stick together from getting things all over the book. I have made more things out of this book than any other.
There are many books that I wish I had never bought. Not Alissa's though.

I tend to like recipe books better that only have recipes and recipes with pictures. I don't buy books much but what saddens me is the books recommend in this forum.. I did not find at our local book stores like Coles and Chapters. I thought for sure Chapters would have something. They have a zillion books on vegeterian meals but only 0-1 books on raw eating :(

i agree Alissa's book is so packed full of info, its really good and is great for getting a head start with raw. there are loads of recipes i haven't even yet tried.
the book is so easy to read too, its not heavy and too wordy.
thank you Alissa, it was your book that started me on the raw journey.

I have to agree with ALL you said Rawkin. Alissa's was the first raw book I got. I had done a search on the internet and I was blessed enough that her name was the first that popped up. I came to this site and read what she had to say and was convinced that I would go raw and also that when I got the money, I would buy her book/DVD set. I was so eternally grateful that I did. I read that book from front to back and did not put it down. I refer back to it so often. It is like my raw food bible. It is the most used book that I have. I have plenty and it is the only one that looks like Rawkin described. In fact, I think that I will order another one just so that I will have a pretty one to put on my shelf for others to read because I am almost embarrased for anyone to see mine, decorated with marinara sauce and all!!!!, but it has my "love" marks and signs of heavy use!
If you have a chance to get any book at all, this is the one to get, and for the price, it is priceless!

Living on Live Food is the only book I use now.
Every once in a while I buy a new one but they just never compare. Its not just that the recipes are fabulous, but there is something about the way Alissa explains things and how you feel like sheÂ’s your best friend just talking to you!

Thank you for posting this thread. I bought Alissa's book and CDs at the same time. Have to say it was not in my budget to do so, but it was the best spent money I ever spent. The CDs were wonderful--gave me INSTANT confidence that I could do the raw recipes--and I did do them one at a time. I adjust recipes to suit my tastes--did this with the SAD recipes, too. My copy is so happily spilled on and stained and very well loved. Recipes range from more simple to more complex but NONE have been disappointing. Thank you Alissa for the wonderfully exciting book and CD. If you can afford it (or like me it was a budget breaker but worth it), I would not hesitate to get both the book and CDs. Absolutely the best gift I ever gave myself.

Alissa's book is great and worth every penny. Before I began eating raw vegan I was so intimidated - I was one who thought a days worth of veggies was the lettuce and tomato on my double whopper w/cheese! And of course, the fries counted towards my daily goal.
Alissa's book breaks it all down, helps it make sense, and it made me feel so positive about successfully changing from SAD to healthy overnight. I highly recommend this book. And my pages are stuck all together too!

I agree! Alissa's book is without a doubt THE best raw book out there. I also continuously go back to hers for the tried and true recipes.
I also wanted to point out how informative it is. She explains what various fruits and veggies are good for - how they help your body. I read her book from front to back the day I got it. I highlighted various bits of information so I can refer back to them. I took it down to my daughter's and she couldn't put it down. I also bought the DVD and watched it the next night until the wee hours of the morning. It was like I was there, only I couldn't taste any of the wonderful foods Alissa was preparing. :(
Her weekly menu planning really helped me get started.
I have a ton of raw books now in my library. I'm a "read freak" when it comes to something I feel so strongly about. But, Alissa's is THE best I feel.
If you haven't bought it - it is soooo worth the money to get both the book and DVD. If you get money for Christmas? Treat yourself to THE best present you could give your body, mind, and soul.
Alissa is truly an Angel that has come to me and totally, totally changed my life.
Thank you!!!

I notice a few people who are newer to raw food expressing concern over fats and calories.
With 100% Raw eating it is so different. One does not need to worry about that. It sounds too good to be true, but it is.
With cooked eating I had to consult calorie tables and fat grams and carb grams and Evil Ingredient grams du jour all the time because my body would keep LYING to me, telling me "You're still hungry and that is so tasty", and I would have to force myself to stop! I'd stop because "the book" (figuratively speaking) had told me I'd had my capacity of calories and still go to bed unsatisfied., despite having eaten so called "rich rood" and "good food".
On a cooked food diet, my body needed to rely on outside sources to tell me when I'd had "too much" fat grams because I'd damaged my body's instincts by putting cooked food in it, which is not natural!
Our bodies are not meant to be confused in the way the (cooked and processed) food industry wishes to capitalize from our confusion. Our bodies are designed to tell us when something is wrong.
It works even if a person is eating a "fatty" raw dessert! I think Alissa Cohen herself said, and I'm paraphrasing of course, that in the beginning she used to eat her date-nut torte (which has loads of walnuts in it) every day, and she lost weight. I find the concern over calories and fat, especially in the beginning, to not be very healthy, and can be off-putting to people who are new to raw.
The body functions differently on raw. When I'm eating something rich (like a raw dessert), I notice far sooner when my body wants me to stop. It's pretty self limiting. The next several days I may want to just eat lighter and natural... the body when it's on 100% raw will direct to what it needs next. Some days I'll feel like having rich food, some days I won't. The body gets to decide.
Does your body need a break? When it does, it won't be difficult to give it one. It'll be obvious and natural. For me there were times when my body needed a break and I didn't even realize I'd not eaten all day until 4pm!
Trust me, for a cooked food addict like me who used to watch the clock all day waiting for my next portion of food, one would never EVER accuse me of "forgetting to eat", before raw!
So, enjoy the freedom of 100% raw eating! Trust your body!
Its when we clutter up our bodies with cooked food is when we are confusing it.
I realize and respect that not everyone is at 100% yet. But this board is here to support and foster 100% and the principles written in Alissa's book "Living on Live Food."
I hope this encourages some people.

I cover my books with clear wide 'shipping tape', it saves on the wear and tear. While making your fab food you can use a 'book easel' to prop the book up on and lay a sheet of acrylic (you can even take a cheap poster picture frame apart and use the acrylic from that) over the pages to hold your place open and keep some of the splashes off . Doesn't work well for keeping off the drool while reading! :D

Her book pretty much lives on my kitchen counter or thereabouts. Even when I'm not using it, I have it sitting out. I have her DVD's, too. My only complaint is that the dvd's were not captioned/subtitled. I've watched them quite a bit and still miss a lot of what is said.
ETA: oh. maybe her next book will be hardcover! that would help a lot. :D

I just checked and there is no captioning. She might have a transcript you could have, maybe even by email. I don't know but if she has it available, I'm sure she'd send it to you. If not, don't be disappointed. Are you hearing impaired? My roommate has a daughter who's hearing impaired and her brother teaches sign language. There could be a volunteer in your area who could sign it to you if you know sign language.

Alissa's is the book I use the most for every day "cooking." Some of my favorite recipes come from that book. Also, I could never have gone raw successfully without her book and DVD. My husband has always said that eating raw food is like moving to a new country and adjusting to a whole new culinary culture. We could have never made this "cultural transition" without Living on Live Food. Thanks Alissa!
I have a whole library of raw food books and although there are many that I enjoy, Alissa's is still my favorite.

Just got mine yesterday :D :D :D I am one of those people who start at the beginning of a book and read the whole thing. So, I got home from work at 5:00, and I am half way through the book. I also bought the DVD, and I am planning on watching that today :D :D :D Can't wait. I have at least 5 other RAW cookbooks because I am a teacher and my students always give me gift cards to Borders and Barnes and Nobles as gifts, so I was able to pick those up for free. I put off buying Alissa's and I regret that. What I have seen is amazing. Rawkinlocs isn't kidding when she says it's huge and unbelievably beautiful. I should be finished by this weekend - yeah, I also read ALL recipes, quotes, etc. I started eating 98% RAW this week, and I have been going through the most intense detox I think I am going to die, but I know that I have to do it. So, it might take me longer to get through everything. So far, what I have read is telling me to stay RAW. If you don't have it, BUY IT - you won't be disappointed. I can't wait to try the recipes.

I'm really excited to read this book and see this dvd. I have a number of books on raw, but no dvd's. I also see so much success here, it is very encouraging to me. My interest is going to run toward simpler stuff. I plan on rewarding myself with the more 'special' equipment as I progress with raw eating.

Alissa's book is the bomb!! Hey RawMa I have to agree with you 100%...if it had not been for reading that book I would not be completely raw/100% to this day, I would have not lost over 95lbs, I would have not gone to Maine, and I would not be pursuing a career in raw foods!!
Another suggestion for maintaining the book is one that one of the teachers from Alissa's May 06 class did. It is really a wonderful way to work with the recipes. If you are a person who can survive outside of the box you can actually remove the side binding and take each sheet and put them in clear plastic protective sleeves and put the sleeves in a binder. Voila', you will have a easier to manage book with sheets you can wipe off!!

The book, on its own without all the kudos, looks and sounds amazing. I want one...badly. I have been sending my husband some subtle hints that it is what I want for my birthday next month. (Subtle as in: hon, i don't want ANYTHING else but this book - here- no, come here *motions to the computer screen* - look here - THIS book, ok I will print it for you!) Very subtle huh? ;)
He tolerated my going veggie a few years ago and now he is tolerating, even encouraging me to go RAW, so I have my fingers crossed. I got very very sick during/after the birth of my son and am now off work taking care of him still (he will be two years old next month) and I have NEVER been so sure that food is what will make me better again. I am at 75% health now, which is decent, but why be satisfied with that? It took me two years to get from about 10% health to this point, I am willing to work more! I want to be fully alive again! Food is my answer, living food.
You are what you eat, it is SO true. I had to be practically dead to realize the difference that living food makes in your health, energy and life. When you are at "ok" health, you would still notice, but back from the depths...it is so evident. It will be hard at first (but what isn't worth doing?) but I am determined. Made hubby think I was not simply having a nervous breakdown by promising to be moderate at first with 75-80% raw :) But, my eye is on the finish line.
So, I am totally crossing my fingers for this book. If I don't get it for my birthday though, I guarantee I will be searching the couch for change for the next month :) Good thing my hubby is slim and has a tendency to carry too much coin. WooHOO!
PS> Yeah, I am always this wordy. It's an illness. ;)

Rawkinlocs, you said it sister!!! Alissa's book is the most complete book I've ever read. It just covers everything! It's amazing that even though I've gone through it several times and still, everytime I read it I seem to learn something new every time. It's like I retain more each time, LOL. It's just great, so motivating, and it reminds me every time a look through it WHY I'm raw, and how great raw is!! :)

OMG!!! thanks for the hearty laugh attack! but~ I completely agree. Have I been asimmilated? Honestly it is one of the best raw food books i own so far. Full of inspiring recipes and support. Very motivating read one can go back to again and again to help when you are new or maybe old too? Mine is getting a lil splotchy/ sticky as well.

The book arrived in the mail, it was like the stork delivering the baby as I have been counting the days for its arrival. I opened the box and the bundle was just waiting to be unwraped. The book is a masterpiece, a true michaelanglo.Just as you wouldn't want your newborn to eat anything unhealthy, this book doesn't want us to eat anything unhealthy as adults. I feel like it is a new beginning, a new jouney, me, my book and DVD will strive for that million dollar optimum health body, and live happily ever after, pain free!

The only suggestion I'd have for Alissa, because I LOVE her book, is to put an ALPHABETICAL index in the next issue. Sometimes I have difficulty finding a particular recipe and have to thumb through all the recipes ... it would be nice to see an alphabetical list of the recipes.
But otherwise.. PERFECTO!

If that's not enough to convince you, how about how GIGANTIC this sucker is!
No kidding! I felt like I was picking up a computer manual. Fortunately the text is large and doesn't take up the whole space of the page. I love the huge margins and whatnot. Great for making notes if you have your own copy. I'm trying to get my manager to get it for our Co-Op's lending library... I wonder how I can convince her...

I love the big print and big pages too. Every time I make a recipe, I make a note next to it with either smiley face (YUM!) or a sad face or a note that says, "It's ok"... helps me remember what I liked and what I LOVED!

I love it too -- for the recipes, the info and the success stories.
The only improvement I'd make if Alissa reprints is to have just one page for a recipe (two or more could share a page, but not have one take up two pages that aren't in view together). The one that messes me up all the time is the Fudge Balls (you'd think I'd have it memorized by now  ) -- the title of the recipe & description is on one page and you have to turn the page to actually get the recipe. This happens a few times throughout the book and always bugs me, but besides that one little thing, I just love it!

I've read a ton of raw books, and hands down, Alissa's is my favorite. It's clear, concise, well-designed, well-written, and when you finish the last page (because you'll want to read every recipe in it), you will be simultaneously elated, enlightened, and ravenous for raw food.
Thanks, Alissa. You RAWK.

I love this book.
More so the Book & DVD Combo.
Raw the Uncook Book by Juliano was my first Read & I found it overwhelming.
Alt's Eating in the Raw was next, but I got confused w/ what's Raw
went through Sunfood, Nature's First Law but was still lost I started surfing and came across this site, not ready to invest more $ towards more RAW books.
Three Months after joining my B-day Came & I asked my DH for the combo.
He thought the price was ^ ( but it was a book & 2 DVDs)
Buddy when that thing came in the mail I was like OMG. It was huge
That and the DVD started making things click..........I can do this!!!!

I have 30+ books on raw food nutrition/recipes...Alissa's was the first I ever bought and I have to say that you can feel how much she cares about health and wellness. I felt like she was talking directly to me. That's one way that I know a book is good. I take it personally! My copy is almost worn out LOL, I may have to buy a new one in case the words get worn away on this one. Seriously, this book is very well made and very well thought out. I wouldn't have been able to go Raw if it wasn't for the wealth of info in the book. I periodically reread it and find answers to new questions. The dehydrated recipes round out my diet and make me feel full for this beginning transitional phase. With the info in that book, I can defend and promote this way of life to anyone.

I should have the book by end of next week, first week in April at the latest, and I can't WAIT!!! I've been flying by the seat of my pants when it comes to raw, reading everything on this site that I possibly can, researching the net . . . and all the while still feeling somewhat clueless. The recipes I do know I keep making over and over (rich cheddar sauce, raw cookies), and eating lots of fresh fruit and salad.
The TOC is an incredible list! And I am GLAD the book is huge and covers so much . . . there is nothing worse than buying a book you hope will give in-depth coverage to a topic only to discover it's a dinky thing that spends most of its time quoting somebody else. Yeah, had that happen recently.
Anyway, hurray for Alissa's book, and I'll cheer again when it finally gets here!!

I love it I love it I love it. I plan on trying EVERY recipe at least once! I'm currently in week 2 of the 4 week challenge (tho I have been raw longer than that...at least a month or two) and just made the mock tuna (yumm!) and the angel hair pasta with marinara. OMG the sauce was soooo good! I think I'm going to change up the broccoli soup to the thai coconut soup as I made the broccoli soup b4 I started the 4 week challenge and I want to try something else!
Question about portions - after week 1 I halved the recipes as I have a TON left over - its just me eating anyways. I know say for the stuffed portobello mushroom its one serving, but for the others, what is the rule? so if I halve the sweet nori rolls recipe I will make 2 rolls...is this one serving or two?

Just wanted to add my kudos! It's a raw food book like no other. It makes raw food attainable. It gives you the tools you need to start, stay motivated, and be inspired. My favorite things about the book are 1) Alissa's advice to fill your kitchen with raw food and EAT, EAT, EAT 2) The shopping lists and meal plans to start you off. She refuses to let you starve or eat nasty food just because it's good for you. I also like that she keeps it simple. There are lots of books that are more in depth (Cousens' books for example). This book is more of a instruction/starter manual to get you to jump in, just do it, EAT, and have fun. It's truly inspirational.

I looove the wide margins - when I first saw that I thought -- that's weird and kinda a waste of paper! But now I know why the wide margins, I have so many notes written in the margins, and in the recipe sections - notes on making the recipe-or ideas of how much garlic I added... I LOOVE THE WIDE MARGINS!!!
Yes, my pages are all stained with food and colored finger prints all over the pages. torn shreds and bits of paper marking favorite recipes or words of wisdom that really helped me... sticking out all over the place.
I have two other uncooking books and they are stellar.... stellar'ly clean, pages crisp, no bent pages or creases in the cover... I'm sure they will come in handy some day... !

Oh yes! This is THE book to have. I stumbled across Alissa's web site somehow while looking for info on raw. I bought the DVD and book. It was so amazing. I read her book in 2 days and then started reading it again. The DVD is SO worth it even if you have the book. When I start feeling like there is no way that I can do this, I watch the video. I have also shown it to several friends who have either taken on the raw lifestyle or have changed their diets considerably.
I have other raw books that I appreciate. The information just isn't as well put as Alissa's. The recipes in her book are a lot easier than a lot of books too. Plus (I hate to sound snobby about it:o ) but her pages are nice and thick and shiny. They are just appealing. LOL
My poor book has suffered some trauma over the last year. On one camping trip my son spilled a glass of water on it so the index and some of the drink recipes are stuck together and the book is all wavy ^^^^^^ like that. BUT I still love it.
So where is yours right now? Mine is sitting wide open by the dehydrator at the moment.

I love the "good book". So much, I have two! :-)
The book allows one to be "interactive." The quotes are wonderful, the photos are beautiful.
One of my favorite photos is of the one of Alissa with a black shirt on in a kitchen of one of her houses. The colors are so beautiful -- the kind of house I would love to own in the future. The salad / food that she is making looks so pretty -- and she just glows!
Alissa looks so happy, genuine, and caring. The book just oozes of her "positive energy" (since she always talks of having feelings of good / bad energy around things).

When I got the book I did not have a fancy blender. Just a cheap ($13 cheap!) blender and a food processor. I went through the book and marked every recipe that needed a dehydrator with a "D". There are tons of things to make that don't need a dehydrator. But they sure are nice to have. Even without the recipes the book is valuable. There is so much great information.

I love this book - I have several raw food books and Alissa's is the most interesting and informative. It was fun to read - in fact, I need to pull it out and read it again - it's MOTIVATING, too! Her energy and passion shine through on every page.
Another book that I really liked was Green for Life by Victoria Boutenko - some of her recipes are pretty... um... well - let's say earthy to be kind, but the information on why our bodies need greens and how we process them vs. how a blender processes them for us - excellent info!
ALissa's DVD is fun to watch, too. The 2 women are hilarious as they try Alissa's food and are genuinely surprised and delighted by how delicious it all is. :)
Raw food is great - I wish more people knew!! Get LOLF!

Yes many of the books out there have 2 little or not enough info. Alissa's is perfect.
I was not a beginner when I got her book, but this book is awesome no matter what stage of raw your at.
MY favorite thing about her style is her "lack" of restrictions. Many raw food books stress don't do this or that, but her book doesn't do that and appeals to ALL of no matter what are level of raw.

Alissa's book is definitely worth the money, even if you have to pinch pennies to get it.
I got the book about six weeks ago, and read it in a day. I really liked it. I had planned on ordering it, since the local bookstores didn't have it. But I was waiting til we had more money, since I hadn't actually seen the book.
But when my local raw food restaurant took my advice and started carrying it (why they didn't before is a mystery) I looked through it and knew it was far superior to the others I had seen or bought. Even though it costs a lot (for me) and money was tight, it was worth it. I liked the pictures too, and the recipes were better than any other raw books I have. Plus I love the before and afters, especially the weight loss ones.
I did almost break my foot when I dropped it once, though. It landed spine-down on the middle of my bare foot. OOOWWWW! Definitely not easy to carry around as "light reading", lol.

you know, as far as affording raw books...if you have access to a library, you can reserve the book and hang on to it long enough to read and try some of the reciepes. I have been raw for like 7 months and I have not bought ONE raw book yet- I need the money for food:D I checked out at least 30 of them from my library tho. I do realise I am lucky to be part of the Seattle system, where I can go online and reserve whatever I like and they will ship it over from whichever branch it is at....but I am sure most big city libraries have the AC book and plenty of the other ones too.
Libraries rock!
btw, I have checked out the AC book like 4 times now:D I will buy it someday when I have the funds tho- its great!

I checked the UK amazon, and it is here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-Live-Food-Alissa-Cohen/dp/0974896306/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1211127109&sr=8-1 although that seems to be quite a hefty price.
It is pretty darn heavy, though ... so I don't know if it would be helpful to get it from someone here in the US.
You could send out a bulk email to the teachers in the UK to see if one of them carries her books. They're all here: http://www.rawteacher.com/teachers_world.html
Or call the office here: 1 978-985-7217 to ask them. They probably can give you good tips.
And... I don't know if regular chain book stores can order it or not. When I ordered my book, I had to go to FL soon after for a month and was so sad I didn't get it before I left. But I couldn't find it in a book store so I just did the best I could without my "guide."
:) It really is a great book.

I was at a health food store that I go to when I am in that area (it is one state over but far superior to what I have in my area, whenever I am close by because my sister lives near there, I always make a stop at this store). Anyway, they had Alissa's book there and I browsed it--VERY IMPRESSIVE. I have decided to order it (instead of buying it at the store) because I definately need the dvd, as I am hopeless in the kitchen. The store did not have the DVD. I DID buy a raw magazine (published in the UK but I guess available here) and Alissa had an article in it! She was answering questions. They also had a review about her restaurant. The magazine is amazing and I am thinking of carrying it with me for on the spot inspiration.
I am new to all of this; that is why I dont really post. But I have been inspired and motivated of late and am thinking of giving this a shot. I have just planted a HUGE garden, too (ok, I know that is really not relevant but I like growing food).
The store I mentioned seemed to have a lot of raw stuff--many raw books, many raw products i.e. I bought some raw agave nectar and they had raw nuts and raw almonds (from Italy, I think). I asked them if they were truly raw and they said yes and I believe them. I did not buy the almonds and I REGRET it; I am going this saturday and will buy some because I am thinking that a breakfast that will work for me is berries (i.e. blueberries, blackberries and strawberries) and a glass of almond mylk made in my vita mix. I did buy raw pumpkin seeds. They also had some raw products in the cold section.
So, anyway, the book is very beautiful and THICK and it has really nice pictures.

I remember getting totally wrapped up in other books last time I TRIED going raw, and I was so CONFUSED....
ONLY having Alissa's book makes going raw the SIMPLEST lifestyle... she really pares down to the basics in this book.
YES, GUYS AND GALS, READ THIS BOOK!!!

I shouldn't have, I need my money for food, but I couldn't resist. I ordered one Used through Amazon. That's the best kept secret out there. I sell a lot of books through Amazon as well. I've been checking almost daily and the used ones have been going for almost the same as new. Today, success. $19. I'm so excited.

Yes, it's a great book!!
I have to say, though, the DVD is what got me going on raw. She shows how to prepare twenty recipes, and from then on I knew I could blend stuff up....ha! I started about 100% raw the next day and haven't quit since. I really needed someone to show me how to do it, and that was the ticket.
The book, of course, is more in depth than the video, so to me they are the perfect pair. The DVD got me going, and then I dived into the book and read the whole thing.
I have to say also just go Ani Phyo's book a couple of days ago, and she has very simple recipes with almost no dehydrating much. Very easy book. I just made her apple pie last night, and I can't stop picking at it...yum! It's an easy starter book, too.

What I can't stand about Ani Phyo's book is her glaring egotism...you're expecting a raw foods book, not an autobiography...

Yeah, I will have to agree about the egotism...everything is "what I do is", etc. It's kind of weird to have so many pictures of the chef in the book. But, all in all, it's a good beginners cook book that I do not regret purchasing.

Yes, I noticed this when shuffling through the pages at Books-A-Million. I was thinking to myself, "why is there a picture of this woman every couple of pages?" I have tried a couple of her recipes though, and they turned out great.
One question about Alissa's book.....are there food pics? I'm a sucker for those. :)
