if you go to www.meetup.com you canfind the raw meetups in N. VA. The one i went to was in alexandria i believe, but i have no idea where that is in relationship to you. i think there is one in richmond as well.

Unfortunately there aren't really good raw choices in the DC area at this time as far as restaurants go. We are all anxiously waiting for one raw place to open...they've been giving us grand opening dates for the past year or so and still aren't open.

The closest place to get raw foods would be The Yabba Pot in Baltimore. They are at 2433 st paul street, baltimore, MD 21218 410-662-TOFU. The tofu phone number is because they originally started as a vegan restaurant. Now they are cooked vegan and raw. open from 11:30 a to 9:00 pm Monday thru Saturday. They are actually having a viewing of the film 30 days on raw tonight and a guest speaking talking about how he healed diabetes on raw. They are very interactive and usually are having a 30 day challenge or speaker or something wonderful like that.

Depending on how far you are willing to drive, there are two raw places in PA. One is about 3 hours from DC, and the other is about an hour from Baltimore. The 3 hour place is called Arnold's Way in Landsdale. I went there once. It was ok. I had a problem with the level of cleanliness...there wasn't one. The other is called Loving Life Cafe in New Oxford. I haven't been there yet but heard it's fantastic.

Otherwise you'll probably be better off just going to the local DC co-ops and preparing your own meals. The cheapest co-op that we have is The Glut at 4005 34th St., Mt. Rainier, MD 20712, 301 779-1978. This is about 2 minutes from the NE DC line and about 15 minutes from downtown DC. It's a small funky place that's been in biz since 1969. Very rustic.

And then there's MOM's (My Organic Market), which is more grocery store style and has a better variety. Also more expensive. They are located in a few places in Maryland and Virginia. Here is their link. http://www.myorganicmarket.com

I will try to recall this thread if the raw restaurant opens before you get to DC in February. It's a few doors down from The Glut co-op actually, so if they open before you come and you go to Glut, you surely will not miss it!

Hope this was helpful.

Also, here is a link to DC raw info:

During your research, you might hear mention or see listed a place called Everlasting Life. Although they like to advertise themselves in raw books and on web sites, they are cooked vegans. They have a cold salad case, but most of it is cooked. The only things that a raw foodist would eat there are their sesame spinach salad, kale salad, and cole slaw. But their food is very salty...full of braggs liquid aminos and not very palatable in my opinion. And I don't know what they put in the kale, but it burns most people's tongues and you'll smell like garlic for 2 days!

This place tends to be inhabited by meat eaters who like vegetarian look alikes, people trying to transition from meat.

Also check Java Green. They are raw friendly. Just ask them to make you a large salad with lots of raw stuff.

VibinOnLife - can you give me more info on the upcoming raw restaurant?? I somehow missed any mention of this anywhere? Is there a mailing list or anything I can sign up for to get updates?

Thanks!

Hi Ladies!

I just want to thank you for inquiring further and inspiring me to get as much information as I could on this raw place. So after Google searches and phone calls to nearby businesses, all I could come up with was this:

A Quest For Fresh
4009 34th St
Mount Rainier, MD, 20712

I have no opening date, contact, or number. The last I heard was September 2006. That was word of mouth, and they are not open yet. I will definitely keep checking on it. Unfortunately, I have no contacts, I just see the place when I go to the co-op. I was inquiring about the space because it was empty and I was looking for space myself, and that's how I found out what was supposed to be coming.

Once they open or I hear a new date, I will start a thread to let you know.

Hey, you guys are great! I appreciate all the input! Dreamrawalwz, Arlington is where I'll be staying - so I'll check out the meetup.com site for suggestions.

Everyone else - thanks! Good to know about the store locations, etc. I plan on packing some foods (I guess I should check and see what I can take thru the airport first - I haven't flown in about 10 yrs and the rules change so often!) So if I really have to, I'll just live on Think Organic bars for a few days

Hi Mary - There's a Robek's smoothie and salad place in the Courthouse section of Arlington and a Whole Foods market with a Jamba Juice in the Clarendon section that may provide some options, provided you see what's in the smoothies and request what you really want. If you want more on where those places are vs. where you're staying (both are Metro accessible), you can email me at caryn.f.ginsberg.83@alumni.dartmouth.org.

Glad you're checking the meetup. If you're here on a Saturday when Nothern Virginia leader Joseph is hosting an event, it's sure to be a real treat.

Hope you enjoy your time here!

Best,
Caryn
