What Detoxification symptoms should I expect?
How long do they last?
Is there anything I can take to calm the effects?
TIA!!

This is my second time going raw. The first time the detox symptoms were fatigue and the intense desire and drive to sleep, sleep, sleep.
This last time, the detox symptoms were very acute. I had a headache (I also went off my husband's organic coffee) which lasted throughout a period of 5 days, I had canker sores which hurt like heck, I had a bit of fatigue and laziness, and some moodiness too. I had insane cravings for the foods I had rejected so suddenly, too.
For me, I just rode through them, as I knew exactly what my body was doing and why. I didn't seek to relieve the symptoms but just carried on. I ate still, when hungry, but it was raw and light.
I've been detox-symptom free now for a couple of days... still have a ways to go until I feel exactly like I did a year ago, happy and energetic, and fitting into my size 14s, but I feel WAY better than a few weeks ago when I was still eating cooked foods.

Here is a good thing to read: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3605
But it is different for all...some get major detox episodes, some do not...some retrace previous ailments or things that may have been suppressed with medications. The best thing to do is to eat lightly during a detox episode (this can be a "cold", "flu", "rash", etc.) and drink a LOT of water to help flush your system and rest, rest, rest as much as you can.

They vary quite a bit. Personally I'm hitting a nasty detox right now that has all the traditional cold symptoms, fever, headache, earache, stuffed sinuses, conjested cough, etc. I decided to follow the advice of many here and have been eating very little, I didn't eat a thing when it first started yesterday. Today I've had a banana, 4 small dates, two clementines, and enough water to float a boat. :D Normally a cold like this would mean at least a week of misery and drugs. I'm feeling much better than I normally would on day two of a major cold, still not great, but better. I may get through this afterall :)

I haven't really noticed any physical detox (unless my silly stiff neck for 2 weeks is part of detox), but I did notice emotional detox. I felt very down and depressed for a few days...but I rationally had no reason to feel that way. I feel better now though. You'll get through it. :)

Most detox is really mild from what I have read. You may think that you have a cold or flu. It really all depends on your overall health to begin with. . . how many years you have been eating SAD.. . . . . a rule of thumb that I have been given is that for every decade of SAD expect a year to detox (intermittantly of course.) In my case I have had alot of major illnesses and alot of surgeries and alot of Rx and I have been going through something much more severe but I still think that it is a detox or that detox initiated it. In my case I think that losing weight with raw as well as the cleansing effect of the foods caused a release of toxins from my tissues that overwhelmed me more than normal detox.

Earaches are a part of detox?? I posted the other day about what to eat when I am sick and was convinced I STILL had all those ear problems that I took all the medication to get rid of. Although I haven't had any ear sores yet so makes me wonder...................
What do earaches feel like when detoxing? For example, throbbing, ringing, aching, full etc.

It really depends on your view of detox. I look at it like alot of folks here do, illness of any type that isn't a physical injury is detox. It just makes sence to me in my experience. I had a mysterious 'illness' that noone could diganose or solve. When I changed my eating habits to better ones, even by just dropping meat out of my diet, the problem went away. That told me that my body was protesting what I was eating.. that the problem was caused by my body being overloaded with toxic junk and it was doing its best to eliminate it. I've had other minor stuff disappear as well just by changing diet.
I listen to Louise Hay alot too for motivation and in her health section she says that 'if your body is not healthy then it is protesting something that your doing. Eat good foods, give it plenty of rest and exercise and you will get better'. It just makes sense to me deep down in a way that throwing pills at something doesn't. I know with this bought of sickness I feel better than I normally would when I am sick. That is because I'm handling it different. Normally I'd be popping pills left and right and eating whatever I wanted cause I didn't feel good. This started on Sunday and from how I feel now I believe it will be over tomorrow. Normally this would go on for at least a full week, if not longer.
Also if you read 'The China Study' one of the things that the research there came up with is that when a creature who is eating a high animal based protien diet that when they are exposed to toxins that are belived to cause cancer or such they did get cancer at a high rate. Now if they took the same animal, changed it's diet to a plant based diet, but kept the toxin around the animals did not get the disease that toxin was said to cause. Even animals who had gotten sick would start to reverse their symptoms when given a plant based diet. Pretty powerfull stuff!

Thanks for all your help. I got my first detox symptom. A MASSIVE HEADACHE! Usually I would just take like 3 Advils and wash it down with Pepsi and it would be gone. But I suffered through it and slept a little put some ice on my head and it still hirts a little now, but getting on the scale and seeing I had dropped 3 pounds really helped. :)
