:D I started taking Maca last week and while taking a bath i noticed that with the weightloss on my breast i had started getting stretch marks, not a very pretty sight.
I had used olive oil and coconut oil and it hadn't made a difference but i just noticed that the stretch marks seem to be going away.
I read this one of the benefits of taking maca is smoother skin, i am overjoyed and will not stop taking it.
I'm liking my breast again, with the weightloss it was very noticeable that i had loss fat in that area.

Try it you'll like what you see, i'm sure of it.
Don't forget to post your results okay.
Oh, i take 2000 mg. a day which is 4 capsules empied in a little water, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, this works for us.

Bethanie, are you still taking the coconut oil and olive oil...or were those "topical" treatments? Are you using all three now?? Just wondering...after having and breastfeeding 3 kids.... I would like to restore some of the elasticity there! Thanks for the tip. I read that maca was very good for you. Maybe I'll give that a try.

I really didn't see any changes but then i started with the Maca and i do feel this it is helping.
I don't know if it will bring them back where they were before i began eating raw but who knows, i just like the fact that the stretch marks are slowly going away.
Who knows what the future will hold but i can't wait to see.

yes, I would like to know as well.

I have stretch marks on my upper arms, belly, and waist just from weight loss and gain and would love to see them fade away. (they aren't too bad but I know they are there so they bother me). I've just been using jojoba oil or cocoa butter on them ... but I don't put it on as frequently as I should.. so I don't see any results. :(

Bethanie
12-18-2006, 08:42 AM
:) I use olive oil on my food and coconut oil also and i rub both on the stretch marks.
I didn't notice any changes until i started taking 2 capsules of 500mg of maca twice a day which i empied in a 1/4 cup of water. I took a look this morning and noticed the changes, i started taking maca about a week and a half ago, quick response.
Can't wait to see what happens next.

What is maca and what are its benefits? Did you get a specific brand (like GNC) or did you just buy any generic at the drugstore?
I have the same issue and would like to make some headway with it.

I took maca before, and I love the benefits.

However, I could not get over the disgusting taste of it. For me it was overpowering too, I couldn't just hide a teeny teaspoon full in a giant smoothie, as it would totally destroy the luscious taste of the smoothie.

So my only alternative was to just stick it in some water and then as quickly as possible swill it down like bad medicine, followed by lots and lots of pure water.

I've not used capsules, as I have issues with using gelatin. But I may start using maca again. I love the way it affects the sex drive, too.

Bethanie
12-18-2006, 10:35 AM
:) is because of the gelatin, i don't eat animal products.
I can live with the taste, also i just read that it may help with weightloss so i will increase the amount i take just to see.
Maybe take and empty 6 capsules taken in 3 doses a day, since it is a food i don't have to worry about over dosing on it.
There is a liquid extract that we got samples of and it is very, very strong it cost $40.00 which we will try and purchase when we are able to do so and i'll give you all the report.
Don't forget when you post tell the benefits that you all have experienced :D

Bethanie

I purchased mine at the health food store and it's by Solaray.
The effects are gradual but the liquid is quicker and i will report the difference when i can purchase it because it's much more expensive $40.00 a bottle and the bottle isn't that large but it is an extract.

I put maca in my green smoothies. I also don't like the taste, but after about 2 weeks I think I'm getting used to it. ;) I try to put enough other stuff in my smoothie to cover it up a bit. The first time I tried it I couldn't drink the smoothie :(.

I'm not sure of the benefits I've had really... I'm 21 and I'm just trying to balance my hormones, since I was on the BC pill for 4 or 5 years of my life. I think it gives me lots of energy as opposed to the days that I don't use it though. I'm planning to continue it, if only because I have a whole bag of it and I don't want to waste it. ;) We'll see what benefits I have with more use!

Hmm...I got a powder maca. Put a bit in a smoothie and woza! I couldn't tolerate the taste. But all this talk is encouraging and I may give it another goal but NOT in my smoothie! :p

I don't like the taste of maca either, so what I do is add some cacao and some maca to the "crust" of the date nut torte... it is very very yummu. I feel it is much more fudgy.

I think I add 1 Tbs cacao and 1-2 tsp maca per 1/2 c raisins.

You can get vegan capsules. I believe they are made of agar agar. You can also get a piller to fill them with or you can do as the owner of my health food store does. She dumps some powder into a shallow bowl then taps the open capsule into the powder to fill it. You would not use this method if you wanted a very specific amount but it would work if you are doing something less picky.

woah, I'd like to know more about *that*. :p

My personal experience is that it does increase arousal. I've heard some report that it does not for them, but a quick and dirty Google search (maca and sex drive) indicates that it's a popular raw vegan aphrodisiac ;)

The hope of that was originally the primary reason I tolerated the taste.

It tends to balance the hormones in general, too.

I've been paying close attention to the appearance of the skin on my breast and i just looked at them in a hand mirror and the stretch marks are beginning to fade away.
It seems amazing to me and i will take a much closer look but on one side they are almost totally gone and on the other where they were deeper the marks seem to be softer.
My Gosh, what a Christmas Gift, if i get nothing else for Christmas i can look at my breast and smile :) :) :) so can my (husband)
Hope to hear good reports from you all.

I absolutely LOVE maca. We put it in our cacao drinks. It tastes amazing with cacao cuz they go together like hand and glove. We don't use a ton in each drink though cuz the maca will overpower everything else.

I haven't noticed that the maca helps with my skin. My skin looks better but I've just attributed it to being raw, but knowing that it may encourages me to continue drinking it. (Like I'd ever stop anyway :p )

We also add maca to our raw cacao energy bars. It is great for endurance and those 3pm blues that can come on pretty quickly during the winter months with no sun. Maca is a cold weather food and is eaten on a regular basis by folks in the Andes mountains. Cacao makes it even more potent, so you're buzzing in no time after a dose of the two.

Try this yummy drink. It may change your mind about the taste:

1 cup young thai coconut water
1 cup almond milk or 10 raw almonds (add one cup of good water if using almonds)
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder or 2 tablespoons raw cacao nibs
1 teaspoon maca powder
1 tablespoon lacuma powder (optional)
2 dates
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon raw agave (or to taste)
1 tablespoon Hemp Oil (or some other good oil of choice)

Blend this on up for a minute or so, drink slowly in a nice glass, and you'll be the happiest raw vegan there ever was. :p

Hey, how do you make the energy bars? I don't have any cacao so can i substitute something else, please post the recipe they sound like something we could take on our upcoming 19 hour trip to Florida.
Thanks for the encouragement and the recipe.

Glad to share Bethany.

I wish I could give the full recipe for the bars, but we sell them via my raw vegan chocolate company so I can't. I can give you an idea though :p

Take your favorite raw granola, some maca, cacao butter, cacao powder, and any other non wet ingredient you like. Mix it all together, put it in molds and let set for a couple hours. Delicious and nutritions!!! ;)

Gwena

By the way, yes you can substitute something else. Try carob powder. If you don't have carob powder you can try some vanilla or any other yummy flavorful thing that you think would go well in place of the chocolate.

Hope this helps!

I get it from www.macaweb.com. We have a business so we get it at a great wholesale price. However, the prices in general are fantastic.

I believe it's about $18 a pound or something like that. I've seen no better prices anywhere. They also sell maca pills, and cacao products.

There's a chocolate bar they sell at erewon market in westhollywood, it's called beauty bar (there are 4 different types). The first two ingredients, raw cacao powder and maca powder. it is truly the best chocolate bar (i forget the name of the brand).

I made my own maca chocolate with raw cacao powder, maca powder, coconut butter, agave syrup. Rolled them into truffles and added different accents (goji berry, almond, flake coconut as garnishes). So delish and my non raw friends loved them.

Found this infor on the web. Wonder if I can buy the actual maca root from a health food store and make the tea option. I could use some perimenopausal and libido benefits right about now. Berries and melons help with the libido some but with the change in season I haven't eaten as many berries :o

Going to Wild Oats today!!! :D

The Maca root has been used for centuries in South America, both by indigenous people and by the Spanish. Combined with food, the maca root was thought to be an aphrodisiac and people today still eat it for its sexual benefits. The maca root, which looks much like a radish, is also excellent at reducing the frequency and intensity of menopausal symptoms.
The maca root does not contain plant estrogens but, instead, is an adaptogen – that is, it helps to balance out our body’s own existing hormone system and encourages the production of hormones. Maca root also contains high levels of calcium, magnesium, zinc, and iron as well as Vitamins B1, B2, B12, C, and E.

Benefits of Maca Root
Maca root is highly beneficial to women entering menopause, because it encourages an increase and then a balance between estrogen and progesterone. This increase in estrogen helps especially to reduce hot flashes and vaginal dryness. Maca root also helps to increase libido, restoring sex drive that was lost during menopause. Maca root is also thought to help decrease the effects of memory loss and osteoporosis.

How to Take Maca Root
The daily recommended dose of maca root is around 900mg. Maca root can be taken in capsule form three times a day, preferably with meals, or it can be boiled and taken as a tea.

http://www.macamagic.com/

Macamagic does a organic raw powder form of the root.

I use mine for digestive balance when I get indigestion. It has great properties in balancing adrenal glands whether underworking or overworking. I don't use too much of it as it seems to give me "weight gaining" indicators. Whether it's part of the balancing process, I don't use much of since that is the reaction I get.

I like that malty flavor :)

12-19-2006, 01:42 PM
I've been using and selling raw Maca powder now for nearly a year. I love the benefits of it. I feel more focused, frisky and firm. It's good stuff! To me, it adds a kind of malt-flavoring to whatever I add it to. I usually drink in a smoothy in the a.m. - about 1 -2 tsp each day.

This is my way of getting Maca, and really enjoying it!
1 C almond milk
1/2 C frozen peaches
1/2 C frozen strawberries
1/2 C frozen mangoes
1 tsp. honey (optional)

Hope this helps!

About how long does 1 lb last?

Also did anyone else notice the weight gaining as ML is referring to?

I'm curious to try this, but not if it's going to cause me to gain the weight that I've lost.

Thanks

About how long does 1 lb last? The recommendation is 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (3,5 g) once or more per day.

Thus,
1/2 x 1 = 8 months
1/2 x 2 = 4 months
1 x 1 = 4 months
1 x 2 = 2 months

Since this is a hormone regulating adaptogene root, I suggest to use as little as possible.
Start with 1/2 teaspoon per day in the morning the first week.

Bethanie,
Thanks for sharing your results with Maca! I finally got mine from Alissa and tried a little in a smoothie yesterday. It was interesting...I did notice a difference in how I felt.

Like Anna said, it seemed to give the smoothie a kind of "malt" flavor...not bad at all! Waiting to see if after a few uses if I get to feeling "frisky" too! :p

IMPORTANT NOTE: I also wanted to remind everyone to please be mindful about posting links to other sites that sell products, especially products that Alissa currently sells on her site as to avoid direct competition. Thanks all! :)

A smoothie made with:

a couple Tbsp. cacao
1 Tbsp. maca powder (or slightly more)
very small handful flax seeds (1 1/2 Tbsp or so)
small handful of nuts (I like pecans)
1 banana
5-6 dates

blended with some ice cubes and water is quite good, energizing, and sustains me for a long time.

(I keep the cacao, maca, and flax seeds in Mason jars together in the cupboard so I can make the smoothie in a jiffy.)

Bethanie - I bought some today at the healthfood store and they only had one type. It had 100 capsules in the bottle for $7.99. I was a little leary cause I know you paid a lot more for yours. Do you think this is strange? I did seem to have incredible energy today based on having a very limited sleep schedule this week! Hoping it will do something for my skin as well!

Bethanie

I purchase the Solaray Maca and it's 100 capsules 525 mg. each.
I think every company is jumping on the band wagon and i would go with a company i was familiar with.
I'm glad you are feeling some energy, i need to take some in a smoothie today, yesterday i shopped all day and didn't eat anything.
It was strange because i had the energy to keep going but later on i got lightheaded and started to shake a little, probably "low blood sugar".
I ate a little bit from the health food store and felt a little better, i should know better than to not eat all day :) :) :)
Back to the Maca, i look in the mirror this morning and my face seems to be getting smoother, i asked my husband if he could see a difference and of course he said, you look nice but you always do :)
Where i do appreciate this, i still would like him to notice if there were a change or not.
I love this stuff and hope to be able to keep affording it, i can't wait to see what it does for my s-- life :D :D. It's suppose to help both women and men, we'll see

I've used maca powder for months, and noticed nothing special. No changes in my skin quality, no extra energy, no *special* other effects. I guess it's just me.

One thing I DID notice is that my feet started smelling terrible. In fact, they stank exactly like maca stinks. (My first, and lasting, impression was of a high school gym locker room-type stink.) Of course, I figured it would just go away, so I put up with it for months.

I quit using the maca about 3 weeks ago, and my feet don't stink anymore.

Just goes to show...everyone's different!

Oh, mixing it with my green smoothie definately was OK to drink, had an indefinable taste but was not overpowering at 1.5 tsp per smoothie.

Good luck to you all, and I say: if it works for you, that's SUPER!

Ariannah
12-23-2006, 06:58 PM
I agree with Jackie:

I stopped buying it because the results vs price were negligible, and I didn't like the taste of it at all. One of the perks of raw is that I don't have to force myself to eat anything I don't like the taste of just because it's "good for me". Every single thing I eat can be decadently delicious to me and it's all good. My bare naked taste buds get to be the guide, not external promises of "nutrients" or whatnot. The carrot dangle just didn't deliver.

The benefits I described before the "special benefits", were a marginal improvement to how my husband and I already are, which was the only reason I forced myself to eat what I had bought. But regardless of the ways I fooled myself and masked the taste (and I tried dozens of ways) my burps would taste like maca and not like whatever I'd gorged on to try to drown out the taste. I can only imagine what my resulting breath was like.

With just plain old raw, I don't even burp!

Bethanie

:) I've been paying close attention to the stretch marks on my breast and they are slowly fading away.
Also it seems that my face is smoother but time will tell. I don't have a problem with the taste of maca and the price is not too bad for the capsules but the liquid is quite expensive.
Hope to hear others progresses with maca use :) .
Merry Christmas.

I just bought my first 16 oz. bag of Maca......and I thank everyone for the tips on using it...I just had a tsp. in a glass of water...welllllllllllllllllllllll, don't think I'll be adding it to anything soon....it's one of those tastes that for now will be I'm having it cuz it's good for me...malt??? I don't know...tastes like a root...oh duh!!! ha! ha!...maybe down the road I'll be using it in other food.....I didn't mind the taste...just don't think it would be a good addition to anything that I know of.....

I'll keep you posted if I feel any different...today' day one...

LOL@ PrincessElaine!

Well, I've been using the one I got from Alissa and I must say...I am noticing some difference in my mood. I know this may be a bit TMI so sorry in advance...but the last few days or so I was on my monthly but all I could think about was sex! I mean, I was ready to attack my husband one night it was so "bad" (not really bad though). Hmmm...I guess it must be working it's "magic" on a sista!

But PrincessElaine...about the taste...I know what you mean...the ONLY thing I've been able to add it to (JUST a teaspoon...maybe a tsp. and a half) is a shake made with handful of cashews, a little water...just enough to blend into desired thickness/consistency, cacao powder (about a TBS. of that), a frozen banana and some ice...and a little vanilla and if the banana isn't ripe/sweet enough, a little agave to taste. So, it's fine in a chocolaty-type thing...but in my green smoothie...I could barely tolerate it! That maca totally ruined what would have been a delicious green smoothie....but in a choco or maybe even vanilla shake...it's pretty tolerable.

So, for a girl waiting for God to bring her a man, so that after they say "I Do" they can "throw down", should I wait to get on the Maca bandwagon?

Hmmm...good question. Well, since you're into waiting, which I can TOTALLY relate to and respect...and not sure if you're into..ummm...errrr..."personal gratification" for lack of better words...maybe you might wanna consider a raincheck on that maca! **MWAA HAA HAAA**! hmmm... I love the taste of maca, it reminds me of a malted shake when I add it! I only add a 1/2 tsp. if I don't want too much of a malted flavor. In the RFRW book they said that if they add powders, but do not want to change the taste of the smoothie they save a little bit of smoothie to put the powder in and then guzzle it down. This way they have the rest of the smoothie left with no powder flavors etc...

I found a great supplement with raw Maca called "Thor's organic raw protein powder" You can find this by simply searching the web for "Thor's organic raw protein powder". I paid $29.95. Anyway, here is the scoop. Enjoy!

Thor's raw power (protein superfood blend), no agro-chems, powdered, raw, 454g (1lb)

Over five years in the making: Thor's raw power! Protein superfood is finally here!
From the desk of Thor (aka Stephen Arlin), co-founder of Rawfood.com and Nature's First Law...
Raw Power! Protein is for everyone who wants to add premium-quality, vegetarian protein and/or super nutrition to their diet.
Enjoy!
Thor's Raw Power! Protein Superfood Blend
Ingredients:
Brazil nut protein powder, hemp protein powder, maca, goji berry powder, maca extreme (all ingredients are raw, vegan and certified organic)

Brazil Nut Protein Powder contains nearly 50% protein, a full spectrum of amino acids, high levels of selenium (a powerful antioxidant) and is rich in dietary fiber. Traditionally, Brazil Nuts have been regarded as the most calorie-dense of all vegetarian foods.

Hemp Protein Powder is a naturally complete protein powder. It contains over 50% protein, branch chain amino acids, Omega 3 & Omega 6 Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and healthy dietary fiber. Hemp Protein is believed to help you get "cut" while you put on size and strength.

Maca is an ancient superfood that was consumed by Incan Warriors to increase strength and endurance. It also has the reputation of being a powerful aphrodisiac. Maca Root contains nearly 20 amino acids, essential minerals like calcium, phosphorous, zinc, magnesium, and iron, as well as vitamins B1, B2, C and E.
Maca can help provide energy/stamina for intense adventures and training sessions.

Goji Berry Powder is a naturally-concentrated extract of the world's most nutrient-rich fruit. It contains 18 amino acids, essential minerals, antioxidants and polysaccharides. It is the most concentrated food source of beta-carotene known.

Maca Extreme is the most potent form of Maca in the world. Fresh, cold-processed immediately after harvesting, it is exceptionally rich in Macamides and Macaenes (the active elements in Maca) as well as sterols and glucosinolates. Maca Extreme helps you take your intensity to the next level and feel "juiced" before those important workouts.

The ingredients in Thor's Raw Power! Protein Superfood Blend all work synergistically, giving you the most balanced, nutrient-rich protein product in the world. It is a must for anyone serious about naturally increasing their size and strength.

Suggested usage: Stir or blend two scoops or two heaping tablespoons (1 oz. / 28g) of Thor's Raw Power! into 12 ounces of fresh juice, water, or smoothie.

Rawkinlocs, would that for ANY product whether she carries or not?

When you say advertise or promote, that includes personal testimony or links? for example, the raw kombucha drink I consume, am I not aloud to discuss or mention brand?

:) can you please tell me where the thread is so I can read for overview.

I'm trying to get clarity on that. I believe she's still out of town so not sure when I'll hear back. I'm basing this on our actual conversations and discussions amongst one another about the board, not a particular thread. But we're working on getting everything in one place for better reference. So, I'll get back to ya on your query. But the main reason i wrote what I wrote above is because someone posted a highly promotional post for a particular product that I had to remove...so I left the little note so they (and everyone else) can know why it was removed.

Rawkinlocs...I understand...yesterday I had posted about buying maca and my original post stated where and how much I paid for it...then I thought, 'oh oh'...that's like I was promoting that store so I edited it out...yet, I do wonder just what is okay....I know I read where people eat, etc....

I do enjoy this forum and hope to understand the rules more.

I hate to feel that i have to leave the forum because of not understanding all the rules.

Oh dear.

I also posted a recommendation for fiber on another thread last night with a very specific brand. Sorry! I had not seen the change before I posted!

It's okay guys...please stop apologizing :)

That's why we're working on getting all this sorted out and established in one place so it's easier to find and read or at the very least, refer members to it. It's cool!

So, how's that maca treating everyone?

Has anyone heard of "Thor's Organic Raw Power Protein Superfood Blend"? It contains Maca as well as a few other raw ingredients and sounds great to add to smoothies. I ordered a large bottle at $29.00.

I don't mean to take away from the maca talk and I know you're working on putting all the answers to these questions in one place, but I was also curious about the rules on referencing recipes from other raw cookbooks or just talking about other books in general... like which recipes we like from them, etc.

thanks!

does maca help you lose weight or is it just the skin benefits? dont want to stimulate weight loss while feeding unless naturally paced. noticed it in museli at farm shop wondered what it was....
