Hi everyone,
I'm gearing up to grow wheatgrass and wonder if anyone has juiced it in their regular juicer, such as my Juiceman Junior? Or do we really need a separate special wheatgrass press to get the best benefit? If so, any suggestions about which one to buy? I'm just trying to minimize the growing number of appliances on my counter!
Thanks in advance,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

As far as I know you need a special juicer that does this...like Green Star Juice Extractor. Hope this helps!

Hi Melissa-

I tried to juice wheatgrass in my juiceman and it was a complete mess

....although it was rather entertaining for my DH and Kiddos....

Just will not work at all....all the grass comes out into the pulp chamber

I jsut decided to stick with the health food store for now and pay 3 bucks when I want some :(

Have fun!

A few years ago when I first got my Juiceman Jr. and found out about wheatgrass from a vegan friend at work (back when I was total SAD diet) I decided to try it because the juiceman instructions say you can wad greens up and send them through with a piece of something else. I will say that yes you will get some juice out but I know it is nowhere near what a wheatgrass juicer or something like a Green Star would put out. like someone else said mostly it will just spit chewed up grass out the back, but you will get a little bit out of it. So I guess if you don't have the money for a better juicer but have lots of wheatgrass laying around, then go for it :D

If you really like wheatgrass, get a hank crank wheatgrass juicer from wheatgrasskits.com. It's cheap and does a good job. If you are okay with money then go for the motorized stuff. BTW, I hated wheatgrass by itself. I liked it mix it with barleygrass.

You can purchase the whole kit if you wish, orrrrr, we just came back from a natural products convention where we ordered 8 wheatgrass juicers. These are the same ones used at the Hippocrates Institute in Florida (http://www.hippocratesinst.com/) so they have to be sturdy. They retail regularly for $44.95 (http://healthyjuicer.com/pages/about.html). We'll be selling the first 7 (we're keeping one) :) ~ for $34.95 plus shipping (and tax if located in Ca). After that, the price will go up to $39.95 and we'll hold it there as long as we can.

If interested, please pm me ~ or, go to one of our websites. It's not listed there as they say it'll be sent out on the 25th. We're waiting to see how long it truly does take for them to get here. Hopefully by the end of the week.

The GreenStar and GreenLife do juice greens and they juice them well. Thing for me is, I don't wish to set my GreenLife up for an ounce or two of wheatgrass juice.

Hope this helps ~

I dont know where I read this, and I have never tried it, but will pass it on in case one of you want to. I read that if you roll a bunch of the wheatgrass blades together in a ball, you can get it through a regular juicer.

Just read this thread--- i found that even balling the wheatgrass up in the juiceman jr. got a pretty pathetic yield. Not worth the money spent on wheatgrass!!!

I recently bought a manual wheatgrass juicer on ebay-- there seemed to be many there. It is the regular stainless steel hand crank kind, yields a lot of juice, and is easy to clean. Check them out! They are not too expensive.

Since this is about wheatgrass, I thought I'd tack it on here rather than starting a whole new thread...

I sometimes go to a Jugo Juice (I know...totally dumb name!) near where I work. They have a very limited fresh juice menu anyway and haven't seemed too enthusiastic about meeting the needs of someone who doesn't order their "normal" pasteurized junk with lots of non-organic herb boosters added in. We won't get into THAT issue, though...

Anyway, today I was feeling detox-ish and decided to add an oz. of wheatgrass to my regular juice combo. The clerk said, "Did you want that on the side?"
Me (figuring that if I had I'd have said so): No. In the other juice.
Clerk: Do you know that if you don't drink wheatgrass within 6 minutes, it won't be any good?

Say whaaaat? Granted, I know that wheatgrass is highly perishable and not something you'd juice expecting to use it sometime late the following day, but within SIX MINUTES?

Hey, I'm a newbie at all this juicing stuff, so what do I know? Is that true, or was she full of organic mulch?

She was on the right path but unfortunately she may have been a little full of "organic mulch". I don't have the exats right here with me but let me state this. Wheatgrass does oxcidify rather quickly however 6 minutes is a little too quick. You should however, drink it on an empty stomach (if you can) and in that case you would be drinking it in a 1 - 4 oz. shot form which would mean that you would be drinking it rather quickly. I also know that you should aim to injest it within the first 15 minutes that it was pressed in order to ensure all of the great nutrients. BUT, drinking it a little bit after 15 minutes is better than NOT drinking it at all. My overall advise is to drink it solo and as soon as possible! Enjoy, if you can!!!!lol

Thanks, Raw JoJo. That was pretty much my thinking on it. I just didn't feel brave enough to pop a shot of wheatgrass on my first try of it, particularly when I wasn't feeling terrific. I drank the juice with the wheatgrass in it in less than fifteen minutes, so I can breathe a sigh of relief, I suppose, at not having violated The Wheatgrass Law by very many minutes. ;)

well, I've had da juice on an empty stomach and almost tossed my cookies (yeah, I know ~ cookies on an empty stomach?) Well, you get the gist of it. As far as timing goes, well, my former mentor was doing a lil experiment where he worked up to 25 ounces of da juice. I think he did that for about 2-3 days. He didn't drink it all in 15 minutes. He put it in a few bottles in the fridge so everytime he did drink it, it didn't let more air in. The thing is, as with most stuff, drink it as fresh as you can.

One student of mine wouldn't go on an orange juice program because she had to work and couldn't make it fresh before drinking. That's what thermoses are for.

As far as drinking da juice straight or mixed with another juice, one person told me ~ why ruin a perfectly good juice? (Meaning the one I was blending it with). Also, if you hold it in your mouth for a bit, swish it around, it's very benefitial for the gums AND it becomes sweeter and more palatable.

Injoy ~

Wheatgrass is, for the most part, nasty to drink unless you do a "shot" with a lemon chaser (as they do in juice bars). Some people have problems with their tummy as it is a very powerful cleanser. My advice is this:

Buy a "Samsung" juicer (you have to have an auger to smash the blades to obtain the juice, plain and simple). They are about $150 on ebay or many of the web sites. You can then use it to juice your wheatgrass and fruits and veggies. It's a tad bit slower than say a Champion juicer, but well worth it (I have both juicers and use my Champion for making "ice cream").

Then, juice the wheatgrass with some fun fruit like pineapple and lemon. You can still detect the wheatgrass but it's not bad.

Also, grow your own wheatgrass. It's so very cheap. Also, Don't plunk down money for a sprouter (I bought one, what a waste of $$$$). It's so easy to grow you'll find yourself running around with trays of grown wheatgrass going "what do I do with all this wheatgrass!!!". Answer-make vats of your tropical drink and dance around in the sun with a hawaii shirt as your energy level will soar....

Okay, that was a stretch....
Anyway, Janine, how do you grow your wheatgrass if you don't use a sprouter? I have always wanted to do this, as the benefits are supposed to be amazing...

I have a question. I think wheatgrass is nasty too, but I know it's so good for you. About 10 years back I spent some time at the Hippocrates Center in Lemon Grove and by the second day...just walking in to the wheatgrass room was more than I could take.

Anyway..........I've been clipping some grass and adding it to my green smoothie. I just can't drink the stuff with any reguality Does this have the same effect or do you need to "squeeze" it to get the full benefit? It's like flax seeds........to get the full benefits, you really should crack the outer shell. Thanks

Has anyone heard or tried the Frozen wheatgrass juice?? Here is the link.http://www.wheatgrassjuice.us/wheatgrass/public/viewable/welcome.htm

It looks interesting but I heard that once you freeze something it looses about 70% of the nutritional value. I'm not sure how true that is but I prefer fresh anyway. I thought that since my counter space is now so limited (dehydrator, juicer, vita-mix, things sprouting, piles of fruit etc etc etc) Not having to grow the grass would be a plus. Any ideas on this??

Just a quick note for anyone that is interested. We changed our name a couple of years ago (to have a .com) and you can find our flash frozen grass at http://www.dynamicgreens.com

I would also like to answer the question that sailaway asked which is does it lose its nutritional value when frozen. The answer is no! Wheat contains something called ice structuring proteins. These proteins allow wheat to stay alive through the winter although frozen solid and return to life without skipping a beat in the spring. Wheatgrass juice is protected by these proteins. The other important note is that our juice is flash frozen and flash freezing is a lot different than slow freezing. When you flash freeze something, small ice crystals form (rather than large) and they do not rupture cell membranes which keeps the taste, color, texture and nutrition intact. So our wheatgrass juice is protected both by ice structuring proteins and flash freezing. Major damage during freezing occurs in organic matter that does not have the protection of ice structuring proteins and is slow frozen. I fully agree that a carrot, apple, banana, etc. will not leave the freezer intact; however, wheatgrass juice does.

Being health enthusiasts (not scientists) we thought we should take this a step further. We put together a forum to allow customers to share their experiences. We are very pleased with the results and invite you to read their stories and draw your own conclusions.
