This may be an annoying post but I just have to exclaim it!
The other day there were two little fuyu persimmons sitting upon the rack of marked down produce. I had never had a persimmon but I remembered hearing about it on this forum. It was .99 cents for these two little persimmons, so I couldn't help but purchase them. Just a few minutes ago, I ate one...skin and all (I hope the skin is edible!) and ohhhh wow!!!!! It reached far beyond delicious! WOW.
Normally these little gems are about 1.50 EACH around here...when on sale. I just wish there had been more, I am in lovvve.
so I wanted to thank this forum as well, or I may have over looked the persimmons and never experienced such a luscious delight.

I recently found some in a store around where I live as well. I had not had them either and WOW. I do think that I read on here that you can eat the skin as well. What amazing things we learn from all the wonderful people on here. Thanks. :D

Persimmons are awesome! :D
I just wish that whenever I purchased a box full, I would practice some resistance to wait for them to become ripe first before I eat them all!!!!! hehe. They're the best when ripe for me, but they also taste good when they are not!!!!!!!
So that's why when I'm in the store, I try to find some ripe ones, hehe.

Ok i gotta share this to see if anyone has had this experience. Well my wife and I bought some persimmons at the farmer's market a couple weeks ago. They were soft and ready to eat. Well we both dug in and they were very good at first but all of a sudden we both experienced a sensation in our mouths that made us think our mouths and throats were swelling over and filling up with hair. It was so bizarre and shocking that we threw the rest of them out. I'm glad the rest of you liked em.
What happened?

I think that may be related to lack of ripeness. Creepy feeling, isn't ? It stopped me from eating persimmons because I thought mine was ripe.

It was operator error!:) Don't give up on persimmons. Hachiya persimmons (the acorn shaped ones) must be very squishy and translucent before they are eaten. If they don't resemble bags of jam, they will fill your mouth with starch that sticks to the oral membranes, as you discovered! Btw, if it happens again, I've found that if you don't eat anything for awhile, the starch will form little balls in your mouth that you can spit out. The Fuyu variety (like small pumpkins) can be eaten hard, although they are better when they give slightly to the touch.
Best wishes,
Nora

Also, fyi, sometimes when persimmons are stored in very cold temperatures they do not ripen properly. They get wrinkled and soft but do not become translucent. Sometimes they are edible like this and sometimes they are too starchy. You just have to bite into them and see if they're clear on the inside.
