Hey damon, welcome

The only beans ive ever used raw are garbanzo beans (chick peas) - to make raw hummus. Simple cover them with water in a bowl, and leave overnite. Then drain and rinse the beans. Next you can either put them in a sprouting jar, or if u dont have or want to use that, u can leave them in a bowl without water, being sure to rinse once a day. at least thats what i do and it always works. in a few days u will see little sprouts on the end.

For hummus
Blend the sprouted beans with some raw tahini, clove of garlic, lemon juice, and extra virgin olive oil - blend until it is smooth and creamy.

Best of luck!

I read that the only beans that are edible raw are mung, aduki, chickpea and lentil but I've seen raw recipes using lots of other beans.
You just soak them for 24 hours and then let them sprout, rinsing them regularly.
You can eat them as they are or blend them into hummous or add them to salads.

Hi,

I can tell you to avoid black beans and kidney beans because those are poisonous when raw. Personal experience! I think pinto beans are the same way but I don't know for sure.

Hi

The sickest I've ever been was from trying to eat raw pinto beans. They are poison. I was new to raw food and hadn't yet read a book on the subject. I don't know about other dry beans.

Hope this helps
Tom

I've been wondering about this. I got Juliano's uncook book for x-mas and I noticed that he uses black beans for burritos. Guess I better not try that one.

When I first went raw about I purchased a whole slew of beans. Spent a lot of time soaking and sprouting. Red beans, black beans, mung beans, etc. I've NEVER gotten sick from any of them. There is LOTS of information on how to sprout here and on the various search engines. IF one follows the directions and does this correctly there "should" be no problem. These directions tell you how long to soak and how long the tails should be as well.

I don't waste my time soaking and sprouting ANYthing anymore. For those who wish to, please, look up the correct information.
