It's your call. Me? I'd take it back, if it wasn't opened.
You COULD use it if you're not 100% raw - it's up to you...

Chances are you are not going to find a raw nut butter in the store. I've never seen any. If you do find it, it would most likely be in the refrigerated section and it will say "raw" on it.

A friend sent me this link ...
http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/gist96.html
the article talks about roasting the nuts first and I just substituted "dehydrate" in my mind ... I used some macadamia nuts and some cashews to make the nut butter I am currently using (which I didn't soak/dehydrate) ... I like chunky nut butter and I just love what I made.
I've seen recipes about making it in the Champion juicer (which I own) yet I just couldn't picture cleaning it afterward  ... lol ... It was so easy in my food processor.
I think for the next batch I may use some almonds that I've soaked and dehydrated and see how that comes out :-)

They sell raw almond butter at my store. $20-$25 a jar! The biggest rip off. All you have to do is throw almonds in the food processor for 10-15 minutes. I haven't done it yet though.

I buy raw almonds by the pound from Wild Oats and make buter in my food processor. Same with raw cashews. :)
If your almond butter is opened don't waste it. Unless you've been raw a very long time my guess is that you have other non raw food ingredients in your home.
Browse the net for a recipe that fits them all and take it to work as you healthful vegetarian/ vegan contribution for the Holiday.
As much as I am an advocate of raw my contributions at potlucks are often just vegetarian.
IE:
Almond Butter Pound Cake, good way to use up all that white flour you don't need.
Almond butter cookies...
You get the idea.
I'm all for 100%, but waste not want not!
Or you could just give the remaining amount to a friend who likes to cook.
Convert them later :D
:o I just got a jar of raw, sprouted almond butter.... the price made my sphincter pucker.
$35.99
I will make my own in the future, but I just don't have time right now with the Christmas rush in our web store.
Ouch

My opinion- take it back if it is unopened.
If it is opened, I say go ahead and eat it. Forget it's not raw. Use it in recipes like you would raw almond butter. Two reasons I say this. Number 1, the cost. Number 2, almond butter and raw almond butter have similar tastes (although raw is generally thicker and more rich). So, it's easier to do the transition the next time you buy nut butter.
I wouldn't say this to something like chocolate where the taste is a totally different experience. But I have been in a similar situation as yours with nut butters and just pretended it was raw and the next time I really read the label well.
Good Luck and keep on journaling! You have readers on this board! :D

I always soak and dehydrated my almonds....and then use my coffee grinder to grind them to powder..then stir in alittle coconut oil, and water to "cream" it. I also, with my last batch, added a teaspoon (per cup of almonds) of tahini butter. I only make SMALL batches of almond OR cashew butter at a time, not enough to make the food processor turn it into butter. Hope this helps. I like my fresh stuff!! I know it's RAW!!

yeah, I can get raw almond butter where I live too.. just have to make a special trip to the health food store... I believe I paid 14 dollars for mine.. can't remember how much is in there though. If you want to know the brand name and how much I got for 14 bucks... let me know.
I'm sure if you could also order some online if you really wanted it premade ...
or like everyone else says, make your own. Maybe I'll try that eventually .. although nuts are quite expensive themselves!
I made the same mistake with my agave nectar.. it's not raw! but I'm using it anyway for now .. I'll get the real stuff in january when I go 100%.

Are any of you close to a Trader Joe's? They've got raw almond butter for $5.99 a jar. And it's tasty!

There's a Trader Joe's somewhat near me. I've never seen raw almond butter there. Almond butter, yes. But not raw. But then I haven't looked for any in a while since I am allergic to almonds.

The almond butter at Trader Joe's is not really raw. The only really raw nut butters that I've ever seen are at Whole Foods in the refridgerated section.
None of Trader Joe's "Raw" nuts or seeds are raw, they pasteurize them.
P.S. you can probably take it back without the receipt as long as its unopened.

When making your own almond butter, if you use a food processor, you need to run it in small 'segments' so the butter doesn't overheat. Process for a minute or less, then scrape down the sides and walk away for a time, then come back and repeat the process until the butter is the consistency you desire.
When using a vitamix, it will process in 30 seconds or therabouts, so it doesn't heat up. The best bet is to start with frozen almonds.
