I've been raw 2 days now and the thought of not eating meat or having milk scares me.
How do I get the same vitamins?
I take a multi-vitamin but I hear its not enough. What raw food substitues the vitamins in milk and meat?

Thanks!!

Have you read Alissa's book?
If not do so.
As long as your diet is well rounded in color and types I think you will be fine!

This site lists the various vitamins and foods that contain them:

http://www.intelihealth.com/IH/ihtIH/WSIHW000/325/7095/34045.html?d=dmtContent

As you can see, the only vitamin lacking from a diet of raw foods alone is B12. You can easily get enough B12 by making a nut cheese containing nutritional yeast. It is not a raw but a live food. Or you may opt to take a supplement. I have to supplement. For some reason, my body is just lacking it no matter what I eat or don't eat. But I also take some meds that can cause deplete the body of it.

Read Alissa's book.

In the meantime, go to the "Need to know more about raw" section of this forum (on the first page) and read what's been posted there by Alissa.

Much of it's straight from her book and is perfect for those new to the concept of raw nutrition.

Simply, though, meat and dairy don't give you necessary nutrients. In fact, they are very bad for your body. You don't need a multi-vitamin. All you need is to eat fresh, ripe fruits, vegetables, seeds, and nuts.

Read Alissa's book.

This is controversial. Most vegans supplement with b12 to be on the safe side. I strongly recommend supplementing for this one vitamin.

There is no nutritional reason for eating meat or dairy with the exception of B12. Supplementation is preferable.

I would also worry about vitamin D unless you get adequate exposure to the sun.

What I would most worry about is minerals - vitamins require the mineral cofactors to be of much use.

Personally I supplement every day because I have seen enough information about the declines in nutrient content in all produce over the past 30 plus years. Choose your supplement with great care as most are junk and filled with harmful ingredients. In his book: Natural Cures, Kevin Trudeau actually recommends against supplements for this reason.

Drink lots of juiced organic greens.

Ew  I recently purchased this stuff called Veggies Plus. It's fruit and veggies. I figured it would be healthier for my son and I rather than just juice and he loves it. expecially the strawberry and banana kind, but I could taste the carrots in it and it makes me want to gag. I wish I could drink veggies juice but I dont like veggies in any other form but solid. I wish I could get passed it. Maybe if I force my self.. ugh I duno

Give yourself time...you will find later on down the road that many things you don't like now, you may end up liking later the cleaner your body becomes as well as the more your palette gets clean and changes!

Some things, like veggie juice, can be an acquired taste for some people. Don't beat yourself up for not immediately liking it!

Also, if you can, juice your own instead of buying a ready made. Fresh has a much better taste. I season some of my juices like virgin bloody marys.... hot sauce, black pepper, lemon juice, and sea salt with a wee bit of cayenne. Mmmmmm..... of course, there probably is a good reason why that's not a good way to drink it.... :p

Alex,

Which supplement do you use, why is it better than others, and where do you buy it? I too am concerned with the quality and purity of supplements. There are independent companies that certify some supplements. One idea is to look for supplements that have been certified by such a company. I am looking into that right now. In the US, I am aware of NSF, USP, and ConsumerLab.

Jane, I normally use Centrum? (spelling) And I find its alright. I sometimes will use Weight sense, its basically a green tea in a vitamin and I also take chromium daily to boost motabolism.

My aunt is a natural hygenist and has been for decades. She's 80 and has to be the healthiest person I've ever met. She uses blue-green algae as a supplement. There is only on brand she'll use, I'm not sure what it is, sorry; it comes in capsules and she breaks it open and dumps the alae out because she won't swollow the capsules-they're not a living food. :p But she uses it because it is more like eating a living food than taking a supplement.

Trinity, I used to feel the same way about vegetable juices. Luckily, just making different combinations changes the taste drastically. I make a very green juice with spinach, collards, cabbage, beet greens, and carrots. But with it, I put in an apple and half a lemon and the lemon really overpowers the taste of everything else and it's all I can taste out of all that stuff. I originally put the lemon in there to stop the greens from turning brown, but it turns out to be the dominant flavor which is good because I don't think I'd like the juice without it. Pineapple does the same thing if you juice it with beets and carrots. The pineapple is so strong (and good!) that it's all you can taste at all. I've never eaten beets (only juiced them) and because I make that juice with the beets, carrots, pineapple, I still to this day could not tell you what a beet tastes like. So if you try juicing, you can figure out little combos like that and it really does make things taste so much better.

I'm not Alex but I recommend taking collodial minerals. Have you ever heard of Dr. Wallach? Or his book and tape "Dead Doctors Don't Lie"? He sells some and Herbalhealer.com sells some too. You could check those out.

LOL thanks! It's funny because the juice *smells* like dirt, but tastes like pineapple. Weird.
