I bought some tahini a while ago- had it opened for at least probably a year now. Don't really care for it except for in puddings etc.

Well, the other day I mixed this tahini with honey (not raw- couldn't find my raw jar) and spread it on apples. My mouth swelled up and I got cold? sores on my tounge. I am a lot better now but still not fully covered. At first I blamed it on the honey.

But now I am wondering what is the life of truley raw nut butters once opened?

Personally I wouldn't eat ANY type of anything that's been opened that long, not to mention something that is all raw.

With raw of course, there's no preservatives so nature has to eventually take it's course. And it's course was to go bad. Don't blame the honey - that's the one and only food in the world that will NEVER go bad. It has it's own antibodies, cool stuff.

So, in my humble opinion, I don't think you were reacting to the tahini. I think it's more like what was probably growing in the tahini.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Thanks!
Hmm...I was wondering how come I didn't like the taste as much. I know, sounds gross. I forget it's raw.

Raw nut butters must be refrigerated, of course. Then, they should be used within a month or so, I think. Even though they may not spoil or go rancid within that time, the nutritive value continues degrading after the nut is processed.
