I'm fairly new at eating raw (just completed 3 months and feeling GREAT!)...I get asked questions and don't always know the right answer and don't wanna just answer without any real basis for it...sooooooooooo, a good friend posed this question ...I'm gonna include the whole thing here so as not to leave anything out in the asking.....


PE--how does the raw philosophy address the sugar/insulin issues? A big part of South Beach Diet is to not eat so much fruit and not eat it by itself because it spikes insulin and therefore causes you to turn the sugar into fat storage. Do you know how the raw people explain the fruit thing? Are the live enzymes supposed to be so powerful that they take care of that stuff? Just curious.


Thanking you in advance for answering this...It will help me in the future when the question arises...I like it when people ask questions...I think my passion and great feeling is an attraction (I hope).

If you're a normie, meaning you do not have reactive hypoglycemia, diabetes, pre-diabetes, PCOS or Syndrome X, then you do not need to worry about eating too much fruit or carbs, unless perhaps there is a family history of diabetes and you are showing the classic symptoms of it starting, such as weight gain, particulary around the belly. If this is the case then you would be wise not to consume too many carbs (regardless of the source) at one time. If you do have blood sugar issues and are getting proper medical care, you would have a meter to monitor your blood sugar yourself at home. By doing so you can easily tell if you've taken in too many carbs because your blood sugar will be too high.

South Beach or no South Beach if you are in good health and have no blood sugar issues, then what you eat is not going too cause a problem.

I go to the Dr. tomorrow for my 3 month diabetic check up and I am believing that my A1C will be down because of my raw eating.

I do know that my blood sugar went from in the upper 200s to the lower 100s after going raw - and I eat a lot of fruit. A lot more than I would have if I was "worrying" about carbs.

What I understand is that if you are concerned about your blood sugar you should eat fruit with nuts, or veggies, so it doesn't cause a spike in the blood sugar. If I don't eat a green smoothie then I add some nuts or flax to my smoothie.

Thank you all for your help...I know for most people it seems hard to believe that we can cure diabetes by eating raw....I watched the movies and so wish I could send them to everyone...yet you know, most people aren't ready for it ...and until then I wanna have all the information I can gather to help along the way.

I just wanted to report in that my A1c went from 7.3 on 9/5/06 to 5.6 on 12/5/06 ... my Dr came into the room with a huge smile on his face and said, "I've got some great news!" ... :D :D :D

Elaine -- this is a fantastic picture of you!!! We've just got to get together so I can see your beaming face again in person. The Terra Bella event is this Saturday (or is it Sunday ... hmmmm, I'll have to check!!) night. It's no longer a Singles Night but will be a holiday get-together. I'll be working it, but I know I can spend some time visiting, too.

Okay -- as far as your question, I just cite the success that Gabriel Cousens, M.D. had which you saw in the clips from the movie (soon to be out, I understand, as I ran into the film editors a few weeks ago). AFter a few short days of eating 100% raw AND EXERCISING (!!), to be off of insulin is incredible!!

I can't explain it, but I have been raw (semi occassionally) since June I even stop taking my meds. My last AC1 was 2 weeks ago and my blood sugar has gone from 7.7 to 6.6. Not perfect, but I'm getting there.

That's a great video (Reversing Diabetes Naturally)! I'm not on a raw food diet, but after I was initially diagnosed I began eating a lot of fruit, veggies, almond butter and eliminating processed foods and my results improved drastically. My blood sugar, cholesterol, liver enzymes, triglycerides returned to normal within a few months. Last A1C was 5.6. My goal is to beat diabetes before the anniversary of my 1yr diagnosis (in August). Thinking about the raw food path to see how it might help.

All I know is that I was severely hypoglecemic in December. Now, I'm not. No more vision loss. No more blood sugar crashes at 10 am, 2pm, and 8pm. No more waking up fatigued. No more waking up in the middle of the night with headaches. This will probably sound bad...but, I don't know how it works, and I don't really think it matters so much how it works. What matters to me is that eating raw WORKS. Period. I am healed of more than just my blood sugar problems, but in eating raw and stabilizing my blood sugar, my body was able to heal itself of other things because it wasn't so fatigued all the time. :) YAY!

My good friend has had diabetes since she was a kid. She has lost feeling in her legs and at one time she was told she wouldn't walk again. She also went blind. She can walk now and she can see. And she has done this just from the type of person she is...she refuses to give up. I want so badly to get her on the raw diet. We have brought her food many times and she is open to it. I just wonder how it would work for her cause she has the insulin pump that is permanently hooked up to her body. It has a little computer thing...the size of a cell phone and she puts in the amount of carbs or sugar she eats so it can pump the right amount of insulin.

I don't really know what my point is...or if I have a question. I just wonder if going raw would be able to make her free of all this someday. Hearing all you talk makes me think there is hope for her.

People's fear of fruit has a shaky foundation. Fruit is a primal food, meant to be eaten as a meal. When we store up all kinds of cooked and processed food in our body, the toxins have a heyday when we for once eat something natural and real.
So yeah, people who eat cooked food and then eat fruit are going to have a land mine of problems.

I've been reading Doug Graham's new book lately (an awesome read! Between that and Alissa's book I completely enjoy them both!) where he goes into detail about fruit and how the body functions with it.

Our (cooked eating) society has bought the nonsense hook, line, and sinker about fruit. I hear it all the time "Fruit is mostly sugar", "Sugar is sugar", "A piece or two is ok, as long as you have lots of protein!".

I've thankfully never had diabetes though many in my family has. I have noticed one thing though with average suger and fruit suger. Before raw if I ate a bit too many sugary items, my heart would start beating faster and harder for a while. This has NEVER happened with any fruit! Not even when I have consumed 5 bananas for lunch at work..
