I have noticed that I get tongue burning with pineapple and kiwis. No other fruit. I read a post on hear about pineapple and that it happens when it isn't ripe. Is it the same with kiwis? Does anyone else here have this problem?

I have always gotten this problem from fresh pineapple. Maybe once or twice from kiwi. I have been reading about juicing fresh pineapple but remembering this effect has not made me anxious to try it. How to avoid this? How to know when pineapple is appropriately ripe?

I have this with pineapple and kiwi, too. They're both really acidic, especially when not very ripe. I get it more from pineapple than from kiwi. I can only eat 2 slices of pineapple before my mouth gets icky, and anything I eat after tastes like sawdust. I didn't have such a big problem with it when I was traveling in Uganda and was eating field-ripened pineapple that had been cut just for our meal. That was heaven!
Pineapple contains bromelain, which is an enzyme that is very good at breaking down protein. In the Joy of Cooking, it is suggested as a marinade, but not for very long, as it will make the meat mushy. So, our mouths are basically meat, too!
I was told by someone who grows pineapple that when the outside is more brown than green, it is ripe. But I later heard or read somewhere that there is no external indicator or ripeness. When it is already cut at the supermarket, look for the flesh to be very golden yellow, and it will be more ripe. I don't even buy it if it is kind of pale, because it will not be sweet and it will burn my mouth!

I also have this issue.
We have mucous membranes in our mouths to protect us from acids, but I guess the acid is too strong...

If I eat too much pineapple, I get this too.
However, every day I put about a 1 inch slice of pineapple in my morning smoothie, and so far, no problems.
Maybe mix it into a smoothie?

I was told several years ago to avoid unripe pineapple for the exact reasons you discuss -- with the idea that if it burns your mouth, what is it doing to your insides?
Then was told how to ripen the pineapple at home -- and it works!
Take the pineapple, wash it twice with hot water, cut off the mold on stem, if needed, ( I personally try to avoid bringing one of them home) then poke, with a fork the stem end (about 1/2"), sit in bowl of water (with dulse if you have it - it does not affect the taste, but should add nutrients), oh, about 1/2" water. Now sit the bowl in a sunny window and wait for it to ripen. It will smell heavenly! It will look brown -- not green!
I typically juice the pineapple (1/4 per day), as my early morning breakfast YUM! It is suppose to help clean your liver of the previous days fat. One per week is suppose to be really beneficial.
Now about kiwi -- they burn me too, I thought I was allergic. The idea of not being ripe interest me, but how do you tell if they are ripe????? I know years ago I ate the yellow version, without any reaction. But I have not seen those since then. They were good.
Hope this helps!

I get the burning tongue from eating lemons now and I have been eating lemons and drinking lemonade all my life so I didn't know why I had that reaction lately. I thought maybe from allergies but is it maybe a sensitivity to the acid? I don't know and it's driving me crazy because I wanted to drink lemonade but I 'm afraid to now since that's been happening.

When you say brown do you really mean dark brown? I've never had a brown pineapple. I buy them at the store when I can easily pull a leaf from the top without much resistance and then let it turn yellow at home. I just looked at the one I have and it's primarily yellow with a *tiny* bit of brown and it's green in the creases, barely noticable. Would it be ripe when the green is completely gone? I was going to cut this one tomorrow, now I'm unsure.
FTR, I get that burning sensation, too. I have to watch how much I eat because if I eat a whole pineapple (very easy to do) I will have canker sores the next day :( Maybe I have been cutting them too soon? I try to wait till it's mostly yellow but I'm confused on the mention of brown

Once I ate too much Pineapple and thought I had permanently burned my tongue and lips. It was horribbible.

I noticed my tongue only burns if I have any of the outside left on the pineapple. If I make sure I get rid of every bit of the outside I have absolutely no burning.

My daughter told me the best way to "cure" a pineapple is to bring it home, wait until it gets bowl in fridge at least overnight. This allows the acids and sugars to drain down. It really, really works.
I used to have to stop eating fresh pineapple because of the burning. But now I let them ripen, cut off the green, put cut side down in bowl in fridge at minimum overnight and it is so very sweet and never, ever burns my tongue.

What are the missing words in the highlighted part above? "wait until it gets bowl in the fridge" doesn't make sense to me...
thanks! :)

OOPS! My bad. It SHOULD read:

I have read this before and I am reasonably sure that it was on this site some time ago
