Hey you guys! I was wondering from anyone who runs marathons, how do you do a long run (say a few hours) on raw food? Do you keep some in that little pouch with your water? And what kinds of food do you bring?
Any and all advice welcome!! :)

Hi Salsababy...I have a half marathon coming up Feb. 6th and what I plan is having some goji berries in my pack, maybe some nuts and a banana....
Good luck...let us know how your doing and what works for you.

Thanks Princess Elaine for the quick response!! Hmm...nuts and dried fruit do sound good. Banana? How do you fit a banana in your pouch?! :p

How about some dates or raisins. Goji berries don't sound too sweet, so I wonder if they'd give you the sugar kick you need to keep going. A banana sounds wonderful. Maybe a Lara bar or some other raw food bar cut into little pieces?

Duh! Why didn't I think of a larbar (kicking myself in the bum right now)??!! ;)

Salsababy-
I have many full marathons & half marathons under my belt with one FM quickly approaching on 1/14 in Phoenix, AZ....I pretty much fuel up ahead of time (the day/night before) making sure my glycogen stores are fully stored...the morning of I "top off" with a couple bananas and some juice....If I do eat I usually like something sweet and juicy.....orange wedges, apple slices.....grapes are awesome if you freeze them prior...they will stay cold and juicy for your long run....Lara bars are good "back up" to have just in case you need it...Dates/raisins/bananas during a long run are too chewy/sticky/dry for my personal preference. I have also experimented with my water bottle.....a shot of pure maple syrup or honey if you're so inclined in your water bottle can help give you a boost....You will find you stay hydrated better as a raw runner....I run 10 miles daily and do not eat at all during that run....we have a holiday hooplah exercise challenge going on another thread if you want to join in...a few of us are runners! C'mon over :D

Good suggestions! What do you do with mileage over 10 miles? I usually don't eat anything for miles 1-13. But after that I start to get empty.

Beverage suggestion. Raw Runner's suggestion of adding honey to water just made me remember this from the little house on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
She talks about takking lunch to the menfolks during harvest time, when they are working their butts off in the fields, and I remember her specifically talking about taking a concotion of vinegar, honey, and water to them. If I recall correctly, she speaks about it as being refreshing and not causing cramps (??).
I have made this sort of lemonade substitute with 1 T Apple Cider vinegar, 1 T agave in 12 oz. water. It is indeed refreshing, but I don't know about cramps.
Would agave's lower glycemic index rating make it better for slow-release of sugars? I tend to have problems with maple sugar and honey causing me to sugar-crash.
