View Full Version : Running low on some things and I ate cooked

I have two heads of lettuce and some avocados, but I don't feel like eating them. I'd rather have Chinese broccoli and olives. The olives are ordered and should be here Monday along with pecans. I don't have a pineapple because they didn't look good. The only fresh fruit I have is oranges, maybe a grapefruit, and the avos. For lunch I had a stir unfry (gai lan and other veggies, Nama Shoyu, Bragg sauce, and some hot peppers) but it wasn't enough. So I cooked some rice and threw in a chicken thigh, then ate it with more gai lan. I ODed on rice and don't feel too well. How should I have handled this?

I have tried regular jar or canned olives, but they're nothing compared to the raw ones; but as I buy them by the case and don't always have enough money, I sometimes am out of them for several weeks. I also had to finish the tomatoes because they had mold spots.

Is this a trick question?

I assume that you don't live alone and the food you ate was for someone else? When I lived alone, eating the wrong things was never a problem because the wrong things never came into the house.

Now there are two things I use to keep me from eating what I should not. One is food allergies. I bought some cream cheese frosted cinnamon rolls for my husband. Although they look yummy, I know how sick I would get if I ate so much as one bite of one. So I don't.

The other thing I do when I buy things is to assign them in my mind to certain people. Now granted some foods are shared. Some things I buy for my husband. Some things I buy for my daughter. I tell myself "This is ___'s food. I can't eat ___'s food because it doesn't belong to me." I feel that eating someone else's food is stealing and I don't steal.

Now I realize this won't work for everyone. I know other people with food allergies who never figure out why they feel so sick and continue to eat what they are allergic to because they are craving it. I've had roommates who ate my food and thought nothing of it. Sometimes they would give me money to make up for it. But that would only serve to annoy me, especially when I'd come home for work exhausted, all set to eat a certain thing only to find they'd eaten it. Yes, I'd have money to buy more, but I wouldn't want to go out and buy more! I wouldn't have minded if they had eaten the food, then gone out and bought me the exact same thing to replace it. But they never did that.

I should add that I don't want to come off as holier than thou since I am not 100% raw all the time. I just don't eat stuff that makes me feel bad.

It must be very frustrating!

Opinion:

-If you truly thought cooked food was not the best choice for you - then you would no more eat it (or feel a desire to eat it) then you would to do hard drugs...no matter HOW it made you feel.

-Evaluate your goals...and set smaller goals....that you can / are prepared to accomplish daily for a lifetime.

-Raw folks should be chronic under-achievers! Ha! ha! (From the Rich Dad books). Over a lifetime...small achievements are the only thing that will get you where you need to be......and make for an easy day.....and a successful migration.

-If, for some reason, you KNEW you were going to live forever, then living in a friendly way with the NOW...and with every moment would be paramount in importance...because that NOW moment would NEVER go away.

On the practical side: Is there anything wrong with NOT eating for 1 meal....or 1 day? Just being alone and present with those feelings? Next time cravings emerge, make a commitment to just sit with them for 30 minutes...and observing them...without acting on them in ANY way first. Just an experiment.

The rice I've had since last winter. I have more in the fridge.

One of my usual meals last winter was stir-fried chicken, tofu, and/or tempeh with various vegetables and brown rice. I've been doing pretty well by putting sauce on raw vegetables, but this time I wasn't satisfied. I haven't yet figured out what my winter raw diet should be. It's neither winter yet, nor a cold day, but I find I need to eat a lot.

I was vegetarian several years ago, but it didn't work out. However, I was eating a lot of beans and grains, and not a lot of greens. I've always eaten fruit.

I know what you mean about not being satisfied....tell me when you figure out the answer to that. Raw just doesn't satisfy like cooked : (

Pierre,
I understand. When you start out going RAW it's exciting and new and when the weather is good and fresh veggies and fruit is cheap and when your job is going well for you all systems are go then it's easy.
But sometimes we slip problems come up, car needs repair and all sorts of things, i won't judge, things have happened to us and we have gone to great lengths to remain RAW but sometimes we have to do what we can.
I say, do what you have to do and when you are able get back on the wagon.
Here Love and Support and Understanding coming your way :) :) :)
Been there, done that.

Pierre, I've had my own struggles. My prayers go out to you, and all of us who struggle from time to time. I often ask myself why some people "latch" on to raw...stay raw....and never look back. I've been struggling for over a year. I decided today, Dec. 1st, that it's time to take my control of my life, and not let food control me. I've been giving in to temptations far too long. Maybe for you, your body is "not satisfied" because it was at a detox point, and needed a certain food (you obviously didn't have on hand) and your body needed it to feel satisfied. I would recommend a trip to the store and just look around...something new you haven't tried in awhile look appealing?? I know last year for the first time ever in my life, I liked watermelon!! If you don't have the money for more groceries.....maybe start a "rainy day" stash...for just those times when food is out, and the checkbook is empty??? I know for me I always try to keep a couple $$$ extra on a Walmart giftcard...for emergency trips for more produce!! Anyway, just some suggestions, hope something I said helped. Like someone else here said, been there, done that. God Bless.

Hi Pierre,

One of the things that I learned when I went raw is that I need to go shopping often, every three days at the minimum, usually every other day and frequently every day! :-) You really should keep more fruit that you like around. Sweet fruit is much more filling and satisfying that vegetables. Write a list of all the fruits and veggies that you really like and then go out and stock up on them!!!

All the best,

Audrey

I feel your struggle of ...disatisfaction... I do not know if I want ot call this disatisfaction. It is some old satisfaction, I have new satisfaction with raw, but I faulter because of some old desires. Its like some old boyfriend that is not the best, you have this new one who is great and unlike the old, but you had a few good times that you miss. Put down the old and embrace the new evertime that old desire comes up I say. keep pushing on..... to the new good way.

i hope you don't let it get you down,

Juliebove, i like your suggestion below for myself:
"I tell myself "This is ___'s food. I can't eat ___'s food because it doesn't belong to me." I feel that eating someone else's food is stealing and I don't steal"

i think i will try this too :)

don't give up, just take one step at a time, cheering you on....

I too caved yesterday and realized that it was because I was over-hungry and I was eating off a salad bar that had cold macaroni salad and I felt ravished and thought I need something to fill me up quick and I decided to eat some. What I learned is I have to not let myself get that hungry before I eat. Maybe this was your issue too. If you snack often throughout the day when you sit down to eat your main meal you won't be so hungry that you have to compromise what you want to eat. Just a thought.

Just do the best you can. I am sure you have made great strides from where you were and the fact that you posted here shows your desire for accountability and to keep moving forward. That says alot!

Best Raw Wishes!!

I went to the store this morning and bought a pineapple, several oranges, some frozen passionfruit, bananas, and a head of purple cabbage (for a change from gai lan). I ate fruit till sunset; now I'm having both cabbages and some other veggies. I may make a salad with avocado and leave it overnight so that I don't have to make it in the morning before church.
