Is it better to refrigerate raw honey?

Depends on if bugs are a problem where you live. Honey will get hard in the fridge so usually a cabinet is better. But if you have any bug issues, keep it in the fridge and just leave it out a big before using.

I keep reading that this is a vegan website. Honey isn't vegan, so this probably shouldn't be appropriate here. :)

Try raw agave nectar, it does the job and it's pretty cheap; and it's vegan.

Since you already have it, though, honey does get hard in the fridge. You'd have to wait for it to get to room temp and soften before using.

Many people still use honey here, it is a personal choice for people with this lifestyle. I just store it in the cupboard or on a shelf.

Honey will crystalize in the fridge or when it's cold or over time.
You can use it anyway, there's nothing wrong with it.
If you like you can place some in a glass container, then put the container in very warm water to liquify the honey again, but it's not necessary.

You do not need to refrigerate it ever.
Just cap it tight to keep bugs out.

I would think that it would get hard in the fridge too. I like to use honey in recipes like ice creams that need to harden in the freezer and it works great. Also it works well swirled in banana ice cream, as the ribbons get all hard and chewy like caramel.

When I buy my honey in bulk, I like to put it in the wide mouth mason jars. There is nothing more frustrating than getting really stiff honey out of a squeeze bottle, but in the wide jars, I just scoop it out with a spoon.

My honey does get hard here in Colorado quickly. I'm thinking this may be due to the lack of humidity. I'll put it in a pan of hot water if I need to melt it down.

Codajess,

Yes, people do call/consider this a vegan site although honey is mentioned/accepted/used by many here. Now, we've (you included) been down this road before and you know from previous "arguments" that honey is accepted on this site regardless to whether it's considered technically vegan or not. No, not everyone here is vegan but the bottom line is whether this forum is considered vegan or not - we just don't want to get into the meat/dairy/egg discussion. Honey is not vegan, but it's already been established that it's just one of those things that some use and some do not and if anyone here IS vegan, then they can and will use something other than honey such as agave as you suggested.

If we really wanna get technical, we could start telling folks if you're not 100% raw then you don't belong here because just as vegan is vegan is vegan...raw is raw is raw. But we don't and won't do that because we know everyone is in a different place. So while honey isn't vegan, it's accepted here on RFT and I HOPE we will not be going down that long, previously-travelled-to-death-road of the old honey issue yet again! I know it rubs you the wrong way, but how about just ignoring threads that explicitly have "honey" in the subject line or in the context. It's already obvious from your signature line what your stance is so we'll just leave it at that, alrighty? Thanks.

I just used raw honey to cure pinkeye! It was great! The recipe called for 1 cup of purified water and simmer the teaspoon of raw honey in it for about 5 or 10 minutes. I did not wait that long. Then get a really clean cotton rag and squeeze the juice into affected eye. It does sting a little. Also soak eye area with rag. I did this for an hour or so one evening and that itchy sick eye healed right up! I love stuff like this!

Honey is the only natural 'food' that does not spoil.

I had a sore throat yesterday and had a spoonful of raw honey, and now my throat isn't sore anymore. I really thought it would last several days.

I store my honey on top of my water heater -- keeps it nice and soft. Wonderful!

My raw honey is in an upside town squeeze bottle by presidents choice. I leave it ontop of my microwave or my dinning room table or kitchen counter, depends if im too lazy to put it back. It travels around the room quite a bit through the week lol :D It stays in its bottle at room temp.

My mom always mixed honey with fresh lemon juice and I'd drink it when I had a sore throat as a child and it really made it feel so much better! Plus it sure did taste good!

I've read different arguments about raw honey on this thread and people getting a little tiffed and saying this is a "raw vegan site".

However, I just bought Alissa's book and have been reading it over and over again. I see she mentions the use of raw honey in her book. Does Alissa still hold her stance about the use of raw honey?
