Where do you find the best mangoes this time of year? I recently purchased an organic one at Whole Foods, and it was really fibrous and yucky. Where do you find the best ones? Has anyone tried the ones at Trader Joes? Maybe they're better?

I think it's pretty impossible to find good mangoes in the winter. They're pretty delicate fruits. I'm not really sure how finding summer fruits in winter works. Where are they coming from? Australia or some other place with opposite seasons? Are they from this hemisphere and have been stored all this time? Are they from greenhouses?

In any case, this winter I've become too picky about the quality of my produce to eat out of season fruits, except very rarely. I live very close to the Rio Grande Valley, so in the summer we get great avocado, mango, etc. But in the winter? Blech!

I'd love to hear how other people are handling this. :)

Yes, this is not the best time of year for mangos and avocados. Both are really stringy!

Hi there,

Unfortunately mangoes just aren't very good when they are out of season. Even though I LOVE them, I pretty much just avoid buying them in the winter. Every once in awhile I crave one so much that I break down and buy one, but in the winter the texture is so bad (stringy) and there isn't nearly as much flavor in them so I usually blend them with bananas which makes a yummy mango/banana pudding.

The good news is that in a couple of months (Feb) the delicious manilla and atafalo (sp?) mangoes (the smaller kidney shaped yellow ones) will be in season and will be here throughout the spring. I can't wait!!!! :-)

Also dreaming of mango season,

If your looking for mango's for smoothies the frozen ones work well for that. I find frozen mango at whole foods year round. It gets me through the winter. I hate paying an arm and a leg for yucky mango!

come visit me! I'm getting them in season for about $2.30 for more than 12 pounds!! Don't know what I'll do when they go out of season.
