View Full Version : Dental Erosion, preventative tips?

I was reading an article about an increase of dental erosion in correlation with raw foods.
I would like to hear from some rather long time (over 2.5 years of raw food consumption) raw foodists to know:
1. have you personally experienced dental erosion?
2. what precautions/methods do you take prevent dental erosion?

If you listen to my interviews with Jinjee, Alissa and Nomi Shannon I believe I've asked each of them about their teeth, none of whom have had problems.
Victoria Boutenko also addresses this issue.
The study you noted did ONLY focused on what they are calling the raw food diet. We have no idea what was really ingested. Did they include raw dairy which is a definite hazard? They are not saying raw "VEGAN" diet. Are these people drinking water with flouride?
So much more is involved in a study than this one shows. Please bear that in mind because it makes no sense to me that a food program which provides more nutrients would cause more problems. Other factors must be involved IMO.

Yep, also, the study didn't indicate what these people did as far as oral hygiene - whether or not they rinsed after eating or if they brushed immediately after eating citrus fruit (which has said to cause weakening of the enamel...to brush right after eating citrus fruit) and it didn't indicate what they ate - were they consuming greens at all, for example?
They also could have had potential, pre-existing problems in their teeth or they could have been using glycerin-based toothpaste which is said to prevent remineralization of the teeth.
I've read here on RFT some who said they experienced improvements in their teeth after going raw.

Sylvanring,
You are totally welcome to post and ask a question about whatever you like. We removed your link because I'm not going to let the board get filled with links to negative sites or boards opposting raw food. Asking the question is fine but again we dont need to promote links to boards and sites as people can find those on their own. There is enough fearbased information out there for people to find on their own, I'm not promoting that here. Thank you
Alissa

I do not think RF will cause dental errosions. Unless exuberant ammount of fruits is consumed.
Nevertheless, it is always interesting to read contrary opinion.

Drink or rinse with plain water. Swish it around in your mouth a bit. Brush with toothsoap well after you've eaten and never for more than two minutes.
Cherie, RawVeganMom had a chipped tooth fill in eating raw and using toothsoap.

You're saying that a tooth regenerated missing enamel?

From my understanding, issues with teeth arise in general because the body is pulling the alkalizing minerals from the teeth to buffer acids in the system. These acids are usually caused by excess acidic food. However, the other factor that can cause excess acidity is rapid detoxification. That's why we need to ingest lots of 1)good quality minerals 2) fresh digestable chlorophyll to buffer the acids in our system and enjoy long healthy mouths of teeth :) If you're worried about it, do some reading on how to check you pH. If you feel it could be higher, drink more green juice, green smoothies, salads, ect.

They say honey protects teeth.. but I'd say any sugars.. even natural.. watch out for. Also milk's, any milks contain acids and fruits and veggies contain acids, if you dont floss and brush morning and night, your going to have problems. :D

Actually that was me, and it was a broken tooth that grew back in durring the time I was raw vegan for 6 months and had switched to using toothsoap and brushing with a natural bristle toothbrush. I had chipped it when I was a kid diving into the shallow end of a pool. Every dentist I saw over the years tried to get me to let them fix it but.. well I hate any dental procedure LOL so I never did! Glad I waited too! My mom has a tooth in front now that the filling kept falling out of, so after seeing what happened to me she decided not to get it fixed!
Thanks for the reply, RVM.... which leads me to another question.....
what is this "toothsoap" I keep reading?

My daughter (6 now) chipped her tooth when she was younger and the whole tooth ended up having to be pulled. When we went raw when she was 5 the tooth grew back in like a month after going raw. I knew the adult tooth would eventually come in but it was just a surprise it was so soon and right when we switched to a raw diet.

JGex- toothsoap is here: http://www.perfect-prescription.com/index.html
I have some and it's okay. It certaintly doesn't whiten the teeth.

For a while, while on raw, I was having teeth problems: chipping, sensitivity, cavities.
This stopped when I switched to low-fat raw. My teeth are better than ever! My speculation as to the reason for this? Probably because I drastically reduced my consumption of nuts and dried fruits, both of which stick to the teeth.
Now, the only times I notice problems is when I eat tons of acid fruit in one sitting (oranges or tomatoes, for example).

You can use a baking soda/water paste once in a while but try not to get it on your gums. Rub it with your finger or a cotton swab. 'Tis what the book says.

I've done it twice so far today, since reading your post. I've read it can cause insomnia if done at night. So, I'll start earlier tomorrow and try to get three sessions in. How long have you been doing it and what improvements have you seen?

Every-Body is different. Personally with me when I started months ago, I did it 20 minutes in the morning, and again 20 minutes at night, never had a problem with insomnia. My teeth got alot whiter. After I pulled, I always brushed with toothsoap, or Dr Chistophers herbal toothpaste.
Then as you get less dogmatic about times, and durations, Sometimes I do it for only 5 minutes in the morning, if Im running late or 10 minutes, It's recommended between 5-20 minutes daily. So my teeth got very white.
Lately I haven't been doing it as much, and I notice a change in teeth shades, so It's time to start pulling more with my sesame oil.
Have fun.

hi. I'm from the UK. A vegan and just beginning to ease into a more raw diet and i'm hoping that you more informed and experienced people might care to assist me getting there....please.
This teeth errosion stuff frightens me somewhat? Is it 4 real? How can it be avoided? What about the low bone density issues? Can this have any substance? I love the idea of getting more and more raw ~ any tips wpould be most welcome.
Oh yes, could someone please explain what exactly "oil pulling" is and how does one do it.
many thanx and love to u all.
