O.k., somebody help me out here.

I've read quite a few posts here where folk say that raw food has made them "sick".

Let's examine this a bit. What they are saying is that, raw, whole, mostly fresh, organic, fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and sprouted grains ~ the food that has been provided from mother nature to feed a human body ~ has made them "sick"?

Now, how can that be? *raises my hand* I know! I know! Experiments have been done on folk who drink colas and it has been found that ~ their systems are use to having this in them and when it is removed, their bodies crave it. The same goes with any drug ~ caffeine, sugar, cooked fats, etc. ANY drug the body has become use to will be craved! Simple, isn't it?

What many don't seem to know is that ~ WHEN these things are removed from the system, the system will have to go through detoxification. The body might be lethargic; old (and even new) aches and pains will come up; skin eruptions! (the skin is a third lung/kidney ~ both of which are expellers of waste).

You most likely will not feel well! It's very likely to happen!

Thing is, IF you do not allow yourself to go through the detox, you cannot come out the other side! Is it uncomfortable? Heck yeah! Is it painful? For many, heck yeah! I've been told when folk get off coffee many experience migraine headaches. What does that tell you? Coffee is poison! What do you thing someone on coke or other drugs has to deal with? YES! Cooked food makes you feel good! (actually, it numbs you to what you MIGHT be feeling).

When someone eats cooked foods or puts caffeine and/or other drugs into the system, the system will automatically surround that with mucuous. When one stops eating this stuff, the mucous HAS to go somewhere. For many, it may go into the joints and/or muscles. For some, out the nose; others, out some other orifice. There are ways to assist this in happening so one can go into and through it faster.

Enough for now. Something for you to consider. Also, for those of you who have questions/doubts, re-read Alissa's book. She explains much of this. And, next time you have doubts, read it again. I'm re-reading and I don't have any doubts. Raw, whole, fresh, organic foods are good for me!!!

Injoy ~

Great Post Revvell! I agree about detox. I had a kidney stone going through detox 3-4 weeks after I began. The first 3 days were hell coming off of coffee. YES detox can be hell for a few days but once you get on the other side you really start to feel GREAT! Sometimes folks that are full of toxins etc... will go through many detoxes before they finally rid their bodies of junk. I know I'm not done because I think I'm going through one again where my skin is breaking out more than usual. I'm still not 100%, I'd say 95%... I can't keep from nibbling while I cook for my family.

I'm getting there I just keep on keeping on! Hang in there gang and don't forget to drink extra water when you notice detox symptoms it will help flush them out faster.

LOVE,
Angie

Ya know, perhaps this post, or one similar, should be added to the new forum about learning about raw foods, so newbies (or those that don't have Alissa's book) know what to expect and don't think they are getting "sick" on raw. The post could go into further detail about what to expect, duration (different for everyone and why), etc.

What do you think? Alissa?

Good idea. Maybe a thread could be started there where we could all post what kinds of symptoms we had while detoxing since everyone is different.

Oh Ladies,

Please, please, please do. I am starting a cleansing fast tomorrow for 1 week then the 30 Challenge on Sunday, 5/1. I am really commited to this change but it would be extremely helpful if I know what to expect so that I do not possibly "Freak Out" when certain things begin to happen with my body.

thanks

When I posted this, I wasn't specifically talking about fasting. Many people, because of their previous food programs, when they begin eating raw, will experience detox as good food is just NOT what their systems are use to. In many cases, those who've been eating lots of dead animal flesh, sodas, alcohol, etc., might wish to start with raw, fresh juices rather than water ~ which is what a fast truly is.

Even so, here is a site which gives quite a bit of good info (only upon a quick read ~ if you find otherwise, please notify me and I will delete).

I also wanted to add, that when people add more fiber to their diets gas, bloating, and sometimes diarrhea are normal at first!! People will add in all these great fruits and veggies to their diets, and have the above symptoms and think "I can't digest this"! and ease off on these nutritious foods. When in reality, most people are getting waaay less fiber than they need before they start raw. So if you keep up with the higher amounts of fruits and veggies, your system will adjust to it, and your digestion will be healthier than ever.

Revvell, this post was a great idea (as usual :D )

MODERATOR COMMENT: Please, either PM (private message) the person or start a new thread in the Juicing/Sprouting forum (that's where most fasting threads are started) so this one can stay within the realm it was intended. Thanks! :)

Blue_sky ~ Thanks! :)

...and thanks for the addition. So true, eh? Folk think they are getting fiber from meat when it's exactly what's clogging them. VERY good point.

Revvell, wonderful thread..THANK you!!

Ladies, excellent suggestion about adding "common detox symptoms" to the "Wanna Know more about raw?" forum!

Maybe someone would like to start a new thread and ask other members to list things they went through in the way of detox once they went raw...even if it they've been raw for a while because let's face it, IMHO, if it takes YEARS to accumulate all of that "stuff" and to eat that way...then to me, it only makes sense for it to take a while to get it all out of one's system (i.e. more than a few days, a few weeks or even months). Then, from the experiences given, we can post them in that forum.

Why would anyone think they're getting fiber from meat??? lol It boggles my mind how little most people know about nutrition!

*shrugs* Hell, I dunno. Same reason folk think eating raw, organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc. is bad? lmao

I also think that certin people have problems like eating too many nuts or dried fruit -then group it all together and say raw isnt helping them.....

There is a term "muscle fiber", but it means a long thin muscle cell. It has nothing to do with dietary fiber, which is cellulose and other things found in plants.

this is such an excellent thread.

I know when I was eating SAD, I would get very ill anytime I ate tomatoes, oranges, lettuce, apples, etc.

they didn't make me sick, but having good food inside me, made my body cry out for it, and I would be so ill from the beginnings of detox in my body, when I did eat well.

It does amaze me at how many people say, they hate vegetables, and they've only eaten over cooked cauliflower or mushy green beans,

when I have them taste fresh corn with lemon juice on it, they love it.

and they ask me, how I cooked it. LOL

when I say, I didn't, they don't believe me, they THINK that all food MUST be cooked, or somehow it is toxic, I always wonder where they get their information, they never seem to know for sure, but they all know the same information. LOL

Retro Rev strikes again! I love it! :p

These have been my thoughts as of late - it's dependency, not deficiency guys!.

Folks think that because they are not feeling well on raw they are misisng a nutrient and that is why they feel so horrible. It's more like they've been so dependent on whatever they've stopped eating that they are having withdrawal symptoms and then detox.

When you stop eating that chocolate, that coffee, that bread, that cheese, that meat, that alcohol, that nicotine, etc. your body is readjusting to the way it should be naturally...sometimes the transition is easy and sometimes the body will feel discomfort during this time. Just ride it through.

Revvell, Thank you!!!
Great thread! This is the stuff that is so helpful to people.

I hope you all continue to post things like this here. I'll try to get something together for detoxing to add to the 'want to know more about raw section'.
Time is tight right now but if any of you want to compile more basics about detoxing, ill be happy to take pieces and some stuff from my book and post it there.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Best,
Alissa

I don't think I've ever gotten sick from a vegetable. Now gas perhaps from stuff like cabbage, if I eat a ton of it, which I generally do not. Some citrus fruits and pineapple give me blisters in my mouth. Not sure what it is about the citrus since I can do lemons, limes and grapefruits with no problems. But to bite into an orange = pain! Oddly, I can put an orange into the nacho cheese and have no problems. Or use a bit of orange juice in a recipe with no problems. I just can't drink straight juice.

As kids go, my daughter likes more vegetables than most, I think. But there are very few of them she will eat cooked. One of the first foods I started her out on was canned green beans because I'd read they were easy for a baby to swallow and to pick up with their fingers. For years they were the one vegetable she would eat cooked. But now she prefers them raw. She also likes corn, peas, carrots, assorted lettuce, cabbage and greens, radishes, green onions, some sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and perhaps a few others I've missed. But she will eat none of these things cooked. In fact she was reduced to tears in a restaurant when they brought her food with some baby carrots on the plate. "I can't eat these! They're COOKED!", she wailed. In fact now that I think about it I think the only vegetable she will eat cooked is the potato. But she will eat that raw too! She got this idea from my mom. They both like to peel one, salt it and eat it out of hand like an apple. Or slice it up and salt it. Not for me. Too starchy.

I can't tell you how many people I've met who say they don't like veggies. And yet they will almost always eat raw veggies. Perhaps they don't have them in their house. But every time I do a party or go to a party, I bring a raw veggie platter. I am not big on dip. We never had it in our house. Not for veggies anyway... Although I am expanding my menu and will now eat the nacho cheese with veggies as a dip. I just don't dehydrate it. Or I partially dehydrate it and pack it into chunks of celery or baby veggies.

Perhaps the reason I haven't felt sick from eating raw foods is because even though my family was never 100% raw, we always ate a lot of raw fruits and vegetables. I still find it hard to believe that there are people out there (at least ones that were born in this country) who eat only cooked foods. I realize in some parts of the world, cooked food is the norm.

I am really looking forward to Thanksgiving. I have onion bread and Swiss cheese in the dehydrator. Am going to make a raw cranberry salad. No recipe as of yet. Am going to modify the one my mom usually makes. Should be easy enough. Will also be making some nacho cheese, cinnamon chayote (apples) and I have the three assorted nut mixes. Might also bring some plain raw pumpkin seeds.

When I told my brother of the foods I was bringing, he sounded excited. My dehydrator was a gift from him and his family as was the magic bullet I used to prepare the seeds for the onion bread. He is not a real health food person but so far he has liked every raw thing I've made for the family to eat.

Thanks for the reminder. :D A few days ago my DH decided to adopt a "partially" raw transition diet, reducing meat (for now... :p ) He rarely eats ANY veggies, cooked or raw, so yesterday he said he felt sick to the tummy from eating veggies. He said the same as always, veggies make him feel bad...I need to go through the detox info with him AGAIN !
