What fruits do you use to flavour nutmilks? I always use bananas (cheap, nutritious & plentiful) but my son is getting a bit sick of it. I tried nectarines when we had an oversupply but it was too acidic.

Hi Caramba,

How about trying berries like blueberry or strawberry (or a combo of the two). Carob for "chocolate" nutmilk might be good too! Maybe even orange for a "Creamscicle"-flavored nutmilk. I'm just brainstorming here. I don't even really do nutmilks (though I sometimes like seed milks w/banana) so I've never actually tried any of those suggestions except in smoothies, which usually also have...bananas! :p But maybe still using banana but adding some of those other fruits mentioned above might satisify him as well. I'm sure the banana lends a creaminess to the milk.

Is it proper food combining to mix fruit and nuts? I am just curious. I know not everyone cares about proper food combining, just about getting raw foods. But my daughter really reacts if I do not combine properly. Thanks.

Hi Paula,

No, it's not good food combining at all :o In fact, it's probably some of the worst food combining. But, many people do it for transitional purposes and just because it TASTES so darned good - all those raw pies, tortes, etc... - poor combining. I have noticed in myself that when I eat fruit/nut combos, my digestive system will let me know it's not the best thing I could have done. Sometimes it affects me and sometimes it doesn't.

So, I try to keep it to a minimum until I am able to totally give up poorly combined foods. If you daughter is really affected by poor combinations, then you definitely don't want to blend fruit with her nutmilks.

Just guessing here...but wouldn't a nutmilk with fruit be a bit easier on the digestive system as the nuts are so broken down??

Good question. I honestly don't know. I haven't really dug very deeply into the rules of food combining because I know that for now, for me, I'm gonna do some improper combos here and there.

I was reading a chart today and they were saying not to mix fruit with anything, not even other veggies. But I personally like spinach and/or celery in my smoothies. So, it's just one of those things I guess. You have to do what your body feels good with. At first, nut/fruit drinks didn't bother me...just started happening lately. If I do a smoothie with nuts in it, my stomach gets really upset afterwards.

Just listen to your body (and the kids'...monitor if they complain of tummy aches after drinking the milks) and if it's working out for you guys, do what you have to do.

The way I kinda look at it, they always say things about animals not being concerned with what nutrients they get and don't get, etc. in nature...they probably aren't concerned with proper food combining either. But then again, perhaps they eat mono-meals intuitively *shrugs*

Rawkin I read that greens and celery actually combine with everything (Dr. D's chart which is pretty exhaustive) so you're good.

Thanks Sharon! Yeah, I could have sworn I had read that elsewhere too! So, I guess even with food combining, "experts" can't agree on that!

So, I'll just be in tune with and listen to my own body as there is just too much conflicting info out there!

I would assume you could just have the nut milk without the fruit. Add carob or honey for flavor.

Sharon - where did you get Dr. D's food combinging chart?

I ordered it through his website www.doctorgraham.cc

He also has an awesome 'Eating Raw Socially CD" I need to find it and listen to it again!

We just recently switched to adding raw agave nectar to our nut milks. You could give that a go and see if your family likes it.
