Hi there...I am a new raw foodie (10 days)!! I have been a vegan since Feb. 2006 and have been researching/entertaing the raw foods idea for several months. Well, now I have made the switch. It was Alissa Cohen's book that flipped me over to the BRIGHT side!! My family and friends think I am insane. So far things have been going great. I love experimenting with food and can hardly wait to feel great. Is there anyone in the Youngstown, OH area that is living this lifestyle??

That Book will reel you in every time. I am so glad you were catchable.
Family can think you are nuts but that's ok because when they come around to your way of thinking, you will be ready and able to teach them all you know.
Happy to hear things are working out well for you. If you have any question, run into any kind of trouble, feel free to post a thread and we will be overjoyed to share our experiences with you.
Make sure you always keep snacks handy and food prepared and you will have a long and smooth Journey.
I wish you everything you need to Stay RAW......Welcome to MY World.......

Thanks for the replies. As for the markets/stores around here...not many. There is a health food store on Market St. that carries raw nuts and seeds and a SMALL amount of organic produce. I have to trek to Cleveland (1 1/2 hr drive) to get to a REAL store that has all the goodies!! I am actually doing quite well with a couple of the store as far as the produce goes.

Welcome, it's good to have you here, isn't the Living on Live food book fabulous?
It really helps so many people, I know, It certainly changed my life for the better, I say "It saved my life." and I know that is true.

I grew up in Struthers but have lived in So Cal for about 30 years now. The store on Market St. will special order items. They did not carry miso anywhere I could find it when I was back visting. Next time will bring my own.
You are so lucky to have farmers markets and the self-pick farms, Whitehouse and Haus for fresh cider. Oh gosh, sure do miss going there.
Would love to meet when I get back there next. Hope you connect with several other raw fooders, too. Maybe post a note at one of the health food stores.

LGJ and Pattico,
It feels sooooo great to know that we have Rawfooders from my hometown.
"I grew up in Struthers but have lived in So Cal for abiyt 30 years now. The store on Market St. will special order items. They did not carry miso anywhere I could find it when I was back visting. Next time will bring my own."
LGJ, I still have fam in Struthers...how cool is that! :D Between Ytown, Struthers, Columbus, and Akron is where most of my extended family reside.
I had no clue about anything "Raw" or "healthy" while growing up there, except for the fact that most folks maintained their own gardens...well atleast the older generation did. I never new anything about the store on Market St. Most of the grocery stores in Ytown were of poor quality, so we did most of our shopping in Boardman.
Pattico,
I can imagine though, just like LGJ stated, there should be an abundance of farmers markets at your finger tips whether on the Sharon line or in Cleveland. Continue your wonderful trek....I wish you alot of successful on your Raw Journey....maybe oneday when I'm up there visiting we can have a RAW meal together... :p
I lovvvvvvvvvve Alissa's book.......just lastnight I was watching the dvds..watching them helps me stay focused especially when i get those darn SAD cravings. I'm still taking baby steps...but on my way to 100% RAW!!
Enjoy your journey!!

Yes! Yes! Yes!
I am from that area. Actually, I grew up just outside of Y-town (girard area). I now live about 50 minutes north of y-town, however, I am home visiting very often and sometimes offering classes in that area. In fact, I just got back to my house late last night, I was doing a huge workshop while I was there for the weekend!
Let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to help anyway I can.
Also, ONe live to live, nice you see that you are a former y-towner also!
Make it a great day!

Keep me updated on any potlucks you may have or any special events..I would love to meet you all when I come to visit. There is no one in my family up there that supports "Raw" or even SAD healthy for that matter :( . So it would be great to have some Raw folks to visit when I'm in the area.
This really RAWKS :p

I don't have any plans as of yet. I normally avoid coming up that way during Winter months, my trek up there is normally made between Spring and late Summer. But ya never know **shrugging shoulders**

I don't blame you..........Ohio winters aren't always the greatest! I don't mind it up until about mid-January and then I am done with the cold, snow, and all around dreary conditions! Does it stay fairly warm through the winter months where you are? I used to visit Maryland (Ocean City) however, it was summer so of course it was HOT!
Also, I have been meaning to tell you, I love your avatar. Did you create it yourself. She is beautiful! Very noticeable and distictive!
Have a great holiday weekend!

Pattico - Is it the co-op that you are refering to that is located on Market Street. Also, do you have any luck finding a decent amount of Organic produce in your area? Like I said before, most of my family is still there and I like to keep them up to date on great stores.
Lady Green Jeans- Let's do a little geneaology...............I didn't realize you were from Struthers! I knew it was Y-town, but not Struthers. My fathers side of the family is all from Struthers. I am not sure of your age, but I thought I would ask if you are familiar with any of the Augustines or Shuttleworths? I don't know too many of the Shuttleworths as my father passed on over 15 years ago and we sort of lost touch with some of them. Anyhow, I just thought it would be interesting to ask!
Enjoy a great day!
Jodi

Hello again! I too grew up in Struthers, I live in Poland now (5 min away).
I would LOVE to attend one of your classes or talk to you, Rawjojo. Please let me know when you will be in town or offering a class nearby. As far as organic food, believe it or not Marc's has a decent selection. The store on Market St. is not a co-op. It is a health food store.
Thanks!!!

rawjojo,
Sorry I did not get back to the thread to respond to your question. I will ask my mom about the Augustines and the Shuttleworths. Shuttleworths sounds familiar but it has been a good number of years.
Age-wise, I am at the half-century mark. There were so many changes when I was back last. Sometimes I really miss being there.
