This is kind of doubling up a bit on the earlier smoothie thread but...just wondering what kind of "greens" can you us in a gs that aren't green? Do those purple-y hydroponic lettuces count? Ruby chard?

Obviously non green fruit is the way to go in terms of disguising the colour....I've had the suggestion of mulberries...any other ideas?

I have mud brown strawberry gs...I wondered if it would work throwing in some "chocolate"??

My kids have an issue with the colour (am thinking of calling it a monster slime drink and see if they like it then!)

Add a little less greens - that helps. I find taht if I put too many greens in there, I end up having to put a TON of strawberries to make it red again. So, for the kiddies, I add a large leaf of kale, etc. or a small handful of parsley or spinach.

You can also get frozen blueberries and add those for a more purple smoothie.

But some of the greens I've used that made less of a green visual impact are green leaf lettuce (the stems make it kinda bitter so watch that and make sure the lettuce itself isn't bitter), celery tops, I think that's about all I've personally tried that wasn't "too green" in color.

Yes he did! I LOVE that show! Having a latino muso husband I can sort of relate to it (though I don't think I'm anything like Lucille Ball!)

I hope this hasn't already been said somewhere else and I am just repeating it, but I have found the answer to covering the green color in smoothies!

Red Beets! So simple, doesn't alter the taste, and really gets it a deep red with not much. Plus, there are no tiny seeds like in raspberries that also turn the kids away from smoothies. You can keep your other flavor choices and disguise it with beets and not have only berry flavored smoothies.

Before, my oldest (6 yrs) would only have green smoothies with mint (it is just the mint leaves that you love turning it green!;)) or with chocolate so he didn't know the true ingredients.

One other way to get him to drink a green smoothie that I don't disguise is to tell him he can skip the salad of the day if he drinks it all. My rule: at least 1 "green meal" a day. He is our family "Thumper" and the only one of us who doesn't like salad or green smoothies. So, if he drinks his obviously green smoothie then he gets to skip our large salad meal and have another choice. I can just sneak in 2 green meals when I hide the color because he has to eat his salad if he doesn't drink a green smoothie! :)

Thanks Rawkinlocs...didn't know that just 1 leaf would be worth it...but I guess it's a case of start somewhere!

NuttyRawMom: I had no idea you could put beets in gs. I juice them with carrot, cucumber, spinach & apple (and dd slurps down any juice I make, but ds has to be cajoled)...will try in the gs and see how we go...

You could say it is from kiwi fruit, they are green like leafy green. :D
here is my favorite:

four kiwi
two celery
handful parsley
one banana
two cups of water

yummy! :p
