i am aiming to be a fruitarian, but first i want to do some type of fast or cleanse to help get rid of cravings and because i'm confused. i dont think i believe that just eating raw will help, i think i need to cleanse out the junk first.

can a water fast be one of the most effective ways to clean oneself out? can i just drink pure bottled water (filtered or non-filtered? artesian alright?)

im looking for the most effective ways to clean oneself out. or is it just enough to start eating raw? thanks friendly peeps :O

and, what are the benefits of how many days on water fasts? for example, does 5 days bring some sort of benefit or for water fasts is 10 days mandatory

Hi... Welcome! There is benefit from shorter water fasts. I've done quite a few 3-4 day fasts in the past... as I felt drawn to to them. Fasting did help me with cravings. Water fasts can be very healing and speed up the detox process. However, eating raw or fruitarian will certainly do that over time. Whatever feels right to you.

On the Fasting Support Thread... Page 1, 1st post... there are links about fasting that may be helpful. Filtered or bottled water is fine. In the Raw and Living Food Discussion section of this site, you will find some topics that may be helpful. Also, it is a good place to ask questions from others that mainly eat fruit.

Overall, I would suggest to give yourself time to transition into these changes. If you start a thread, (in the discussion section) other fruitarians can probably offer some good insights for transitioning into this.

All the best to you with this... :p

Hey TC...

There has been a change with the discussion section today. It is for raw eating discussion and not other styles or fruitarian. Just to mention, I eat the raw style Alissa teaches and it has been great for me.

The discussion 'past archives' may have some information you're interested in. Also, here are couple of links... they are fruitarian sites. They may have some information that will be helpful for you.

Just eat raw. Green smoothis with spinach, etc. Fiber is the "best" cleanser and eating/drinking raw foods seems to me the natural way to cleanse and build at the same time.

Hold the belief that you're already clean.

Remember that you could have years of toxic, sticky matter built up in your body's cells and in your intestines.

This cannot be cleaned out in 5 days. I personally recammend switching to a fruitarian diet firstly and allowing your body to adjust for at least week or more and then beginning a cleanse or fast. I have done several cleanses and found that this way is most beneficial.

Good luck and listen to your body, it is your greatest intelligence.

Yes we are all built different. For me I don't think that a juice fast does much cleansing because the concentrated juices without fiber acts like clay inside me. I choose herbal help - slippery elm bark powder being my absolute favorite. Herbs like senna give me horrible cramps but I will use cayenne also. Most herbal preparations for cleansing have something in them that I don't tolerate well. I prefer to do mono herbs just like mono eating - then I learn how my body tolerates that item. Sometimes I think that mono eating for fiber and plenty of water without juices cleanses pretty well. I have really appreciated the spirit of helpfulness on this board and am trying to continue the tradition without being offensive to the newly restated rules. This is the best forum there is. The other ones that I have found so far can go days without a response and if one is suffering one really needs help and often is too ill to do all the research necessary. This board has been really good for that due to the high traffic volume as well as the spirit with which the board was founded and maintained and I would hate to see it stifled. I wish we had a reference library for all that is on the internet and possibly in hard-copy books as well. This would require more than I have to offer - wish I was rich - so I could fund it. Would need full-time staff to maintain as well...you know - for when sites get up-dated or disappear and when books get revised....or old classics get republished after being out of print.

It takes a lot of time living a clean lifestyle, and can't be done with a week's worth of cleansing. You can get the gunk out, but if you are talking about real cleansing, like the renewal of fresh, clean, disease free cells then you could be talking years.

IMHO, a water fast is the best way to clean out. But it will be very difficult if you've never done one before.

I'm doing one now. Day three ;)

This one is easy because I've been doing extensive meditation. If you live a busy life, I honestly wouldn't recommend a water fast.

Dragonvry, just curious, why is a water fast a bad idea if you live a busy life?

I just read 'Dinning From an Empty Bowl' and am trying a coconut water fast, as it's supposed to be easier yet similar to a water fast. Today is day one.... I drank one young coconut worth of water and am not wanting to have any more, it just tastes so sweet and feels so fatty.

Don't know how I will manage tomorow!!

The fat content is a lot lower in a young coconut. After you drink the water, you can save the pulp in the freezer. I did that during a fast, I had several little zip loc bags of coconut meat in the freezer, it was great for smoothies later on.

The best to clean out is a long term lifestyle of high water content/fiber foods which RAW is......

Fasting is abstaining from food to [concentrate] the detox process and give the body/mind rest to heal. Depending on each person's circumstance, fasting can offer benefits and others, can create a more weak underlying issue.

However, the body/digestive system in the [long] run will need fiber from the raw foods to slough off the toxins, scum etc... more so, fiber assists in structuring a healthy stomach terrain where essentially vitamin b-12 is essential.

As far as effectiveness???? It depends on how well you resond and handle whatever type of fasting you are attempting. If you are a person who has been on a classic SAD diet for a long time, you may try RAW and watch how your body reacts.

In my opinion, those that have attempted RAW with doing a fasting first, ususally have problems with sticking with their healthy eating endeavors. But then again, most that have sought fasting first, do have food issues 99% of the time.

So what has your diet been like?

In my experience, fasting without the proper rest/meditation leaves you drained. That's why juice fasting is so much easier than water fasting.

I was reading up on fasting and read never fast with ice water. I guess it speeds fat burning because your body gets cold and works extra hard to warm up :D becareful and if you feel faint, suck on some sweet fruit for a momment.

Another option is a colon cleanse. You can read about how a lot (though not all) of our food cravings stem from needing to clean out the build-up in our colons. Just something to think about if you're open to it.

Yup, yup, it scrapes everything off the walls of your intestines and makes all the nasty stuff come out. If your poop is nice and comfortably solid then your cleaning your colon properly. Let the fiber scoop the poop :D

As a person who's done many, I second Miss Linda's 2 cents on fasting. :D
