I've just noticed that Raw Living (a shop and mail order facility in Brighton, England) is now selling raw oat groats.

I want to buy some but need to know what to do with them. Do I sprout them? Do I grind them up? Are they good as cereal with almond milk? Can I make savoury things with them in the dehydrator?

Experienced oat groaters, please give me some ideas!

Thanks.

I buy Alissa's Raw Oat groats & then use it like *oatmeal.*

I heat it up with a little water, add cinnamon/agave-sometimes apples & then top with almond milk. YUM !

I've also used them to help with batters for breads-just grind up in coffee grinder. Turns into a *flour*.

Lana,

Aren't the oat groats a bit hard on the teeth? Sorry if that's a silly question. I'm used to making porridge that was heated up so that the oats softened.

Tracy, Alissa's basically look like oatmeal *flakes*-but are not heat treated.

I am not sure what you could do with the hard ones.

Try & sprout them-see what happens. :D

I've never had them but you could {{{probably}}} sprout them and then blend them up with other things to make an oatmeal

Hi

I soak the oat groats over night and they are soft and chewy in the morning. I combine them with millets which I soak with them and add blueberries and stevia. Pine nuts and raisins help the flavor even more. There was some controversy about them being raw but someone who tried to sprout them and gave up threw them in his garden and they did grow so they must be OK. I'm not sure whether all raisins are raw but it only takes a few. Bananas are also good with them.

Hope this helps

I use oat groats all the time. I make an oatmeal recipe from Jennifer Cornbleet's book, Raw Food Made Easy.

I soak the oat groats for at least 16 hours and they get pretty soft. Then I put them in a food processor with apple chunks, maple syrup, a little water, pinch of sea salt, and some cinnamon. Mix those together then top with apples, raisins, or whatever else you like.

I eat this almost every day. It's hearty and satisfies any bread cravings I may have.

Hi there,
I've never tried oat groats either but recently got some to make the following recipes. Apparently, they're to live for. In fact, I'll be making the Ginger Stars tomorrow to "baptize" my new Excalibur dehydrator! Yay! :D

Mysticat’s Ginger Stars

2 cups ground oat groats
1 cup cashew "flour" (cashews ground in a coffee grinder)
1/4 cup agave
2 tsp. cinnamon
3 tsp. ginger
6 dates + 1 cup raisins--soaked and pureed

--roll out dough on a non-stick surface (I used wax paper)

--use cookie cutters for shapes, then dehydrate until "hard"

The ginger cookies are also yummy if you substitute ground pecans for the cashews ( I found that out today, when I ran out of cashews!)

Mysticat’s Chocolate chip cookies

1 3/4 cups cashew "flour"
3/4 cup ground oat groats (or use all cashew flour for a much sweeter dough)
1/4 cup agave
2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup coconut oil
chocolate chips (blend 1/2 cup coconut oil, 1/2 cup carob, 1/2 cup cacao- put mixture in freezer, then chop into chunks)

--form into balls, roll in cashew "flour" and refrigerate

Thanks everyone, these replies are really helpful. Didn't think of soaking them :D but then I don't actually know what they are like. I know wheatberries are hard and I was thinking along those lines!!

You live and learn.

I've never gotten up the nerve to try them...but I read a recipe where someone actually ground them up first, and then soaked them in water overnight, so in the morning you have "oatmeal"....add in your fruit and whatever, sounds logical to me.

For Mysticat’s Ginger Stars cookies do I use dried ginger or fresh? Also, does anyone have a raw scone recipe or a blended green smoothie recipe? Thanks in advance
