I have tried the arise and shine cleanse twice, I haven't finished it yet but my biggest concern that I found after ending the cleanse was exessive weight gain. I've noticed that after cleansing I tend to put on more weight than before the cleanse and have since gained 10 pounds without changing my raw food diet, in fact I gained 10 pounds while decreasing my nut and fats intake.
Does anyone have any thoughts on cleansing and fasting and whether it can destroy your metabolism?

I have had the same experience after fasting and have wondered the same thing. I look forward to seeing people's responses.

I just got to hear Victoria Boutenko speak on this subject specifically. She was also fasting often. It seems to put her body into 'survival mode' so every pound was hanging on! Then when she started eating again she was 'starving', really hungry. She began eating more feast foods, dehydrated and fancy raw. She read and read and studied. Then upped her dark greens! Back to the smoothies in large quantities. They stopped the constant 'hunger' signals.
She told us that if she feels the need to 'cleans' or 'fast' it will be with green smoothies. The fiber keeps the body clean. Greens feed the body all the nutrients it needs with a little fruits added to the smoothie. This way your body won't think it's starvation time.
Makes sense to me. Any 'youn'uns' out there may find it easier, but I'm 60 and Victoria is....40+? and we've got different metabolism issues and have to work hard at this. ;)

From my research over the years I found that Metabolism is # 1 Genetic ! Then there are variables based on activity, lean body mass/bodyfat ratio and diseases (thyroid etc). The metabolism does not change to extremes under normal conditions. A pd of Muscle only adds about 50 ish calories a DAY to the Metabolism. Often you read add muscle = eat more, yes but 50 cals a day per pd is not a big difference is it !
Fasting for long periods can cause short term changes in MET. If you fast and then come off the fast in stages that gives the time for the MET to adjust. You should not gain extreme amounts of weight after a fast, some water gain will happen as you begin to eat.
If you fast then go off the fast and begin eating your normal diet, or have a day of big eating because you are so hungry, weight gain is more apt to happen !

The body is designed to gain weight after a fast. The trick is to eat less than your normal diet, after the fast. This way you gain healthy weight, rather than a bunch of fat.
The way you break your fast, makes or breaks your fast.

1st day after fast: fruit juices
2nd: fruit smoothies and juices
3rd: a few whole fruits, smoothies, jucies
4th: can add some veggies in smoothie form
5th: can eat fruits and veggies normaly
and then eat whatever raw u want after that

Hi ka_yun,
Sounds like a very good plan. Do you know where you got this info? I'd like to learn more about this method.
