but I'm new at this, what can I say?

Are buckwheat (the kind you sprout) and buckwheat groats the same thing?

Yup. NO question is stupid. I have been eating buckwheat since a child and when I bring it to work no-one, Absolutely NO-one knows what it is.

Marci, for sprouting and putting into recipes like breads, crackers, porridges, you need the RAW "groats" which should be the hulled (= hull removed) buckwheat. They looks sort of "blonde" with varying tinges of pale pink, green, beige, etc.

Whole buckwheat is almost blackish as the hull is still on it.

You don't want kasha, that is ROASTED buckwheat.

Sometimes in some areas it takes some doing to find the raw groats, usually the right health food store, Whole Foods, decent bulk store, etc.

Yup. NO question is stupid.

I can't agree more with this. This is how we learn by asking questions.

Thanks, I started trying to sprout grouts last night and I just wanted to check that I was using the right thing.

You can get grouts through organicfruitsandnuts.com. I have to buy all my nuts/seeds/most raw supplies other than produce on the web as I am overseas.

Thanks again!
