Is there any form of oats that are raw? My HFS sells oat groats and steel cut oats. I think the Steel cut are heated, but the oat groats are not? I just want to confirm. We have a stevia plant that my mom dried the leaves off so I think in the winter I may soak the oats and add that as well as berries for a breakfast choice.

From what I've read from people on this forum, even the whole oat groats are steamed...but perhaps contact your HFS to confirm.

Alissa does sell raw oats on her site, though...http://www.alissacohen.com/shop/product.php?productid=23&cat=5&page=1

Natural Zing has raw oats too. It's very rare to find raw oats so be sure to ask many questions. I once got sick from eating oats I was originally told were raw only to find out they really weren't.

I've bought oat groats from places like Vitamin Cottage and other health stores, they must be raw because they sprouted.

I should warn you though that sprouted oat groats don't tasted anything like oatmeal.... There's a recipe in Raw Food Real World for raw oatmeal that involves soaking the groats for five days (yes really, five days).... i want to try this soon. But my initial experience with sprouted groats is that they were sickly sweet and nauseating like wheatgrass ~clutches belly~ ugh. However, I've heard other people have really great experiences with them, so I will perservere!

good luck! :D

Wildfae, maybe you didn't like them because they really were't raw. Just a thought.

I find I need to add a lot more stuff to raw oats to enjoy them. With regular ones, I would just add walnuts (to soaked oats) and enjoyed them. With raw, I also add agave, cinnamon & sometimes vanilla. They also can scratch your throat so be sure to chew them well & have some water handy just in case. It's actually one thing I don't love better raw. Though almost everything else I prefer raw.

but how could they not be really raw if I sprouted them?

it's the unbearable sweetness that gets me.

Yes. If the oat groats sprout...then they are vital. Give it a shot, and get back to us!

cool, thank you everyone. Once I bought them over a year ago when I started to go raw and soaked the groats over night and they were a chewy consistancy in the morning and I added raw honey to it. I didn't know about questioning then so I assumed they were raw, but had a reaction like I ate cooked food. I may just get them from Alissa's site to be sure they're raw!
